Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Prelude Before Dawn

Glancing at the petrified crowd,Elon wasn't bothered, even though he had revealed his strength, or rather the real and new him. Instead, his confidence had become more firm, containing a hint of unconsciously generated arrogance, which was unsurprising. He was on another level compared to normal humans, it was only natural if he looked down on them.

The journey so far had been nothing but quiet, apart from the surprised and happy glee in the eyes of the Knights, who mostly peeked at him not believing what he had done today.

As if the show he put on never happened,Elon calmly watched on through the window as the commoner's went on their daily; gasping in awe at the conspicuous carriage he rode in, mostly due to the Blood and Diamond insignia belonging to House Of Maxwells drawn on it. With a color of red and blue, red meaning blood attained through battles, while blue represented diamond, something more costly than gold.

Ignoring the loud exclamation of gossips, Elon finally got down at the end of his journey.

His destination?

The familiar and amazingly built castle stood before him, and inside dwelled the splendor and declaring wealth of the Maxwells known to all.

Quickly getting down from the carriage while the knights assumed their poses, the maids who sighted Elon from immediately had a strange and pitiful expression on their face.

Had their young Lord been verbally bullied again? they thought.

Unfortunately, their expression and thoughts were going to be let down after hearing the full gist of the matter from the four knights who were probably going to share the epic tale of their adventure today.

Upon walking into the castle, the gossiping maids instantly busied themselves with whatever was assigned to them.

Unable to admire the scene and thought of being sorrounded and alone in a castle full of females, Elon silently continued on his path along the lavishly decorated hallways.

Entering his section of the castle, Elon entered his large bedroom, the big wardrobe by the side had already been fixed, his bed arranged and properly kept clean with no spec of dust.

Scanning the perfect example of personal hygiene before him, it wasn't hard to guess who had done it. If not Adurey, who else could have?

Now speaking of Audrey, Elon suddenly realized that this maid of his wasn't around, nowhere to be seen.

Unsaid,he had long since realized the fact that she was never treated like a maid.

'Isn't it just perfect though?'...

"Well… gotta go." taking opportunity of Audrey's absence, Elon quickly dashed for the place where he kept his toolbox .

Picking up the already arranged , and well hidden set of clothes from were he hide them, Elon dashed from the room in an instant, before Audrey would arrive.

Due the unaccounted possibility of Audrey's return, Elon's carefully drafted plan had almost gone awry.

Fortunately it was now solved.

Swiftly sneaking through the hallways… with the map of the whole castle naturally generated within his head through Elon's memories, it was nothing but easy dodging the maids till he entered the secret passage way.

Illuminated by the slowly burning torchlight on the wall reaching the far edges filled with darkness, the inside of the secret passageway was once again revealed to him. Despite the poor illumination of the flame, Elon was able to examine his surrounding.

"Huh?" scrutinizing his sorrounding, Elon suddenly realized that the ordinary flametorch he neglected all this while had always been on whenever he came, and so had it been even in his inherited memory from the previous Elon.

Staring at the flame torch with a strange expression on his face, Elon couldn't help but wonder if the flames were eternal flames from legends. But seeing it's mudane glow and how barely it illuminated the darkness within the passage, Elon instantly cast out this thought. Besides, who would keep an eternal flame inside a secret passage on a torch stick, ignoring the fact that it never existed in the first place, even if it did, the whole wealth of the Maxwell family couldn't afford one, talkless place it here.

Summing it up, Elon concluded that the reason the flame still being on was a mystery of science, done by calculating things such as humidity, temperature… you know science this and that, or maybe there was an ancient way in this world that made such things possible, which wouldn't be surprising since he had seen several movies with that same setting back on earth.

Withdrawing his attention from the flame torch, Elon placed down his tool box for tonight's assignment.

… As for what dwelled inside ? it was best left untold for the time being.

Changing into the new set of clothes he had taken from his room from where he hid it, Elon adjusted the elms of his clothes properly.

Dressed like a common noble, the lowest ranking nobles, and as the name went, they were particularly common. Made up of failed noble family fallen from grace, or being a distant and unknown relative to the current still ongoing families. As long as you were accepted or had proven that you were related, then you would be acknowledged as a noble.

There were also the cases of common merchants buying this title and being acknowledged as one. Although it was costly, there were also other benefits in the kingdom available to this lowest ranking nobles, more better than being a commoner.

But within the main walls of the capital, this title was same as having nothing… if without a backer.

And as for why?

This was because common nobles held no land or fief of their own ,no inheritance, only a title…

…Which was the reason why Elon took on such an identity within the bustling capital.

Unadorned robe with no decorations, made of a just slightly above average material, gray in colour and not so conspicuous. Although the previous him was an asshole, he was also a genius when he had a goal, an example of how he had carefully selected this robe for his various sneak out occasions when he left the castle.

And as for his eye catching hair colour, Elon simply dyed it in dust not caring of his image. After all he was just a common noble , nothing special.

Wanting to take a look at the mirror to savor his new look,Elon was met with disappointment realizing there was nothing but the dark old wall around him.

"No mirror?"

"Damn… let's go then" Elon muttered to himself before dashing through the dark with a flaming stick in hand while bracing for the incoming stench that would assault his nose upon opening the exit.
