Chapter 7 - DORM

A few days later, Derek arrives at the admissions office. He wanted to speak to them about getting a single room; he wouldn't bother doing this if staying off campus wasn't such a hassle. "Next," says the woman, nonchalantly seated in front of Derek. "Yes, my name is Derek, and I'm here to seek a change of room to one for a single person." "Okay, give me a minute to check for available rooms."

"Okay, it seems there aren't any available at the moment, so you're going to have to make do with what you've got. You can always come back later; maybe a room will be available then."

"What a cold person! I can't let it end like this. It's time to turn on the charm," he thought to himself.

"Wait," he said.

"What now?"

"Isn't there anything that can be done? Surely there's something that can be done."

"Listen, young man, my job is hard enough as it is. I don't need a green-nosed little punk like you making it harder now, you've said what you said and I've done what I could do. Don't waste my time and move along, people are waiting" she said sternly.

If this had been the old Derek, his lack of confidence would have made him immediately want to leave so as not to 'embarrass himself any further'. But the Derek of now couldn't care less about such things. He could get what he wanted if he did the right things. And do the right thing he will.

First, he observed her and asked, "Why does she seem so upset?" Scanning her facial expressions, he immediately deduced the multilayers of emotions she was feeling. She simply didn't care about him or this job.

Mix that in with personal life issues, and you have the recipe for a cunt.

"Madam, I understand you have your own troubles, and my request may seem insignificant and irrelevant, but you must realize that if I can't have my personal space, I can't focus on studying. And if I can't study, it will be a major disappointment to my mom, who is." He paused. "ill"

The woman rolled her eyes. "Your mom's ill," she asked skeptically.

"Yes," he replied.

"What's wrong with her",

"I am a bit embarrassed to say."

She scrutinized him for a moment, assessing his sincerity. Derek knows how to look and act to convince anybody of anything, and this lady was no different.

"Okay, I'll see what I can do."

Ninety percent of communication is non-verbal. You could say the right thing and still fail, but Derek succeeded because of his adeptness in non-verbal communication. After Derek leaves, he heads straight to a casino, recalling his conversation with the lady. She had told him about a room that wasn't frequently discussed in the list of available rooms. It was being held for a boy named Tony, who had a rich and famous dad and was going to purchase it for almost nothing soon. The lady believed Derek could potentially get this room, as it was not officially assigned to anyone yet and Tony had not paid for it. She warned him to prepare for the cost and apologized if he wasn't financially ready, saying it was the best she could do for him.

"Thank you so much, ma'am. Have a nice day," Derek replied.Derek finishes remembering as he stands in front of one of the biggest casinos in Chaldoria.
