Five miles.
A distance one could run for the sake of their own health. About a fifth of a marathon run and nearly twice as far as far away a horizon would be on a flat terrain…
That is, assuming the curvature of this world was the same as that of Earth, and no other physical inconsistency between the worlds would affect it.
Still, five miles was a distance at which a chase would still be in its tracking phase rather, than a long way off before turning into a pursuit.
And so, a three-mile hike as Leo called it, especially for soldiers forced to carry quite a huge load of weighty equipment, wasn't a hike at all.
By the time Leo raised his hand to command an all-stop, his unit only traveled as far as two miles, still having a mile left to go of their original plan.
"This will be as good as anywhere else," Leo muttered to himself, after considering the report of the local guide.
