Carissa, oblivious to his inner turmoil, settled back in her seat, trying to push aside the uneasy feeling. She knew something felt off, but she chose to focus on the moments they were sharing. However, the guilt of choosing to spend the evening with David instead of her daughter gnawed at her but she silently looked forward to going home after dinner with David and making it up to her daughter after apologizing.
When they arrived at his place, David opened the door for her and led her inside. "Make yourself at home," he said with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
Carissa took a deep breath, trying to shake off her doubts. "Thanks, David. I'm really glad we're doing this."
He nodded, his eyes dark with something she couldn't quite place. "Me too, Carissa. Me too."
As David diligently prepared dinner in the cozy kitchen, Carissa couldn't resist the urge to join him, her curiosity getting the best of her.
