The battle soon concluded but as John ran back, the gates actually closed with a loud bang, and immediately after sharp spikes were dropped from the top to cover the walls, a measure to keep out any monsters that could climb. Only he was left outside.
Completely, they had shut off the city from every entrance, effectively stranding John outside.
John was no idiot, he expected a betrayal but never on the first night. He felt he would be lulled into comfort and made use of as a soldier before the rug was pulled from under him. Yet, the cold, locked, massive gates left no guesses to be made.
Nor did the countless monsters behind him.
"WHATS THE MEANING OF THIS SHERIFF JONES?!" John shouted he did not fear death but the taste of betrayal was especially sore and enraging to him.
