Chapter 1 - The very beginning

"I think we should stop having sex".

Nessa was fixing her make up in the mirror, they just had the craziest sex few minutes ago. She never expected those words from Cedric.

"I said we should stop seeing each other Nessa"

Cedric repeated himself, just to make sure she heard him. He was lying in bed naked.

"Okay"

Nessa replied uncaringly and continued with her makeup.

Cedric knew Nessa to be cold and unpredictable, but her response was unexpected.

They were both in the Armed services of the country. Cedric was in the intelligence department in the military, while Nessa was in the Navy.

She adjusted her hair finally, picked up her bag and walked out of the room without looking at him. Cedric only focused on her curvy body. Sure those military outfits covers too much he thought.

Their relationship was supposed to be a one night thing, but it has been two years now.

Cedric was tired of hurting his girlfriend Lisa with his secret affairs with Nessa. This time, he made up his mind to stop everything he had going on.

It has been weeks since that night, he had dearly missed Nessa. He can't seem to get her off his head.

Her attractive but mean eyes. Cedric can barely look into her eyes on a normal day without feeling numbness. It felt like Nessa left with the love he had left for Lisa.

Lisa had broken up with him a week ago after he had mistakingly mentioned Nessa's name when the were having sex.

He thought to see her again, he miss the sex so much. He sent her a text to meet him in a hotel room that night, begging for a bed moment.

Cedric showed up 2 hours before time, took his shower and lay in bed waiting patiently for her.

He heard a knock on the door. Immediately he opened the door, he saw two hefty men standing right in front of him. Before he could have time to say a word.

The men knocked him out.

He woke up hours later, gagged and tied to a seat. Nessa was sitting right infront throwing a hostile stare at him.

"Please blink Nessa and get this thing off me" he groaned in pain, his head felt heavy from the hard knock.

The two men were standing at a good distance in a corner of the spacious room.

"I didn't ask for a body guard to watch us make love. What are you doing". He struggled to lose free.

Nessa grinned and said

"You do have some nerves, but I don't enjoy it".

She stood up from her seat and walked closer, grabbed him by his chins.

"What do you take me for? A whore". she asked in anger, Cedric chuckled and replied

"We met in a one night stand baby"

In anger, Nessa slapped him hard on his face.

Cedric wasn't honest about Lisa to her at first, but even when Nessa found out about her, she didn't seem to care.

"Listen we were having fun, I thought it was mutual atleast". Cedric said.

Nessa only felt disrespected, she didn't ask for too much.

She ordered the hefty men to take care of him and walked out.

The two men beat up Cedric till he fainted, then abandoned him and left.

Nessa was making breakfast for her fiancée, she was a little bit tired from the work out she did earlier that morning. She wanted to make pancake.

Her daily routine is to jog round the yard every morning, it helped ease her mental stress.

"Is the breakfast ready" Nicholas screamed from upstairs.

"Almost. I am just a bit stressed" Nessa replied back hoping she was loud enough to be heard.

He snapped "Is there any moment you are not stressed. Just be fast with that, I will be down in a minute. I was hoping you prepare my lunch too. Microwave the pasta in the fridge".

It's been 3 months since Nicholas moved in with Nessa after they got engaged.

It has not been the most uncomfortable decision for her to bring her fiancée to live with him. Nicholas hasn't been supportive but Nessa herself didn't make it easy for him to connect with her.

She was still mixing the flour when the doorbell rang. She cleaned her hands and headed for the door.

Immediately she opened the door, she froze on seeing the familiar face standing right at her door.

"Hello" he smiled awkwardly at her.

Nessa could barely feel her legs anymore, she couldn't believe her eyes, her heart was beating so fast that she couldn't bear it anymore.

She fainted. Cedric was fast enough to catch her into his arms, he then fell on his knees for support.

He shook her gentily in attempt to resuscitate her, but she was not responsive.

"Is any one home?" Cedric called for help.

Nicholas ran down shortly at the strange voice.

"who are you? and what are you doing here?.

Cedric scowled on seeing him.

"She fainted" Cedric responded "Get some water".

Nicholas rushed to the kitchen to fetch a bowl of water from the tap.

Cedric stood to his feet, carried her and lay her gentily on a couch. He paused to look at her face. Her body was soaked in sweat. She looked languid and he blamed himself for what had happened.

He slouched over her and rubbed her chin. He missed her so much.

Before Nicholas could come back, Cedric was gone.

"what is going on behind those eyes Nessa" Dr Gideon asked curiously and in the most soothing tone.

Nessa eyes were heavy from tears, she tweaked and bit her lips.

She is fighting to let words out of her mouth.

Dr Gideon only sat watching her, and waiting patiently for her to hold up her emotions.

"I am sorry" she sniffed.

"It's okay. You don't have to apologize" He said her softly.

Dr Gideon is the son of the billionaire business man, very handsome, with an attractive physique. His lips are firm, with his masculine full neck and his eye lashes are full and beautifully long.

Dr Gideon has been her therapist for some time now.

Everything started when Cedric ran away, Nessa almost went crazy. The therapy session with Dr Gideon has been the only thing keeping her sane.

Nessa had to quit her job at the military, relocated to a new city. Then went back to praticing her specialty, as a lab scientist at a federal hospital.

"He came back" Nessa said.

"who?" Dr Gideon asked.

Streams of tears ran down her cheeks and now clustering on her lips. She smacked it off and replied

"him. I saw him. He came" Nessa said in a cold tone.

Dr Gideon stood and placed his hands in the pocket of his trousers

"why are you then crying".

Nessa scowled, threw a stern look at him.

"No I am seriously asking" Dr Gideon said not moved by her stern glanced.

Nessa shrugged and replied softly

"I hate him".

Dr Gideon grinned, looked into her eyes and said soothingly.

"You don't hate him Nessa, you were only worried. All you feel maybe hate, but certainly not for him". Nessa withdrew her gaze.

He then came closer, sat next to her and said in a calm tone.

"He is back Nessa. What ever be his reason but this is the time you fight".

Nessa is her special patient. She is the only one he allows to visit her outside their schedule. Sometimes, she would call him on phone just to cry in his ears and let her heart out.

"That bastard. So after two years" Agnes said bitterly.

Cedric really dealt with her elder sister. She knew Nessa loved him dear. She watched her sister break down and changed completely.

"Are you sure it's him. I mean you fainted and probably hit your heard. It might not be him you saw" Agnes tried to convince her.

Nessa squinted towards her. She gulped in a good amount of whiskey from the glass of wine Agnes offerd her. She frowned at the roughness of the whiskey running down her throat

"I get it" Agnes sniffed.

Some part of Nessa still doubt it was Cedric she saw. But she was certain about his voice.

"why is he here?" Agnes asked.

Nessa doesn't know the answer either.

"He looked weary and his eyes. His eyes. I can tell he has been suffering". Nessa said faintingly.

Agnes snapped

"Well he deserved it"

Nessa squinted towards her again, then looked away.

She thought about him. Cedric was looking lean and sick. She sipped another glass.

Dr Gideon was right. She doesn't hate him. She is only worried about him.

Nessa gulped the last drop and dropped the glass on a stool and leaned on couch for comfort.

At 3 am at night, the street were scanty and with the cold breeze that engulfed. Timothy made sure to wrap himself in a thick jacket. The police had summoned them to a crime scene. He was on night shift, but never imagined he will be working outside.

As soon as their ambulance arrived at the location, he alighted immediately and headed inside.

The mansion was so big and beautiful, owned by Senator Damian.

As he walked through to the room of the incident, he couldn't help but admire the gigantic chandelier in the sitting room. His portraits were scattered on the walls of the sitting room. He must be inlove with his face.

Senator Damian's body was still laid on the bed. His wife was been interrogated in the next room, while the police kept searching and taking pictures of every corner of the room.

The only time Timothy ever saw him was on TV. He didn't have a good record in government and for some reasons, he is always linked to lot of controversies. So finding his killer would be a lot of work.

All the staff avaliable at the time of the incident have been arrested. No one knew when the culprit entered and left the building, or even how they managed to escape. There was no sign of forceful entrance, the cctv cameras were frozen, but the security were on duty at the time of the incident.

Who ever that is responsible for that is really good, but it certain it wasn't a one man job. They definitely had an insider to have operated smoothly.

Back at the hospital, it was already 7am. The news was all over the Internet.

"Timothy you are still here. I never expected to meet you" Nessa said as she entered the lab. Her hair was a little bit unkept and her face sweaty but she still looked pretty.

"Yea I am waiting for Dr Benjamin, he will drop me half way". Timothy replied.

Dr Benjamin was also among the med team at senator Damians house last night. So many people have been trouping in and out of Dr Benjamin's office to get the gist.

Timothy was a socially awkward person with speech disorder, nobody bothered coming to him for a gist.

He used to have a crush on Nessa but they are now normal friends, basically because they share the same office space. Nessa barely spoke to any staff except Timothy.

Her colleagues thought she's proud.

"Did you hear about Senator Damian" Timothy asked

Nessa scowled "Yea, on the TV at the lobby".

"I was there" Timothy snapped, smiling awkwardly.

"Oh really" She dropped her handbag on her desk "You seem excited".

Timothy immediately withdrew his smile.

"Not in that manner" he stammered "They are terrible people".

Nessa nodded, sat on a chair and said

"I heard he was shot in the chest".

Timothy nodded awkwardly, he thought he missed that part.

They went silent.

Timothy took his time to study Nessa. She always looked pale and sad, but Timothy knew when she's really upset. She had reached for her bag and dropped his back many times.

"It is OK if you want to smoke. I can cover up for you. I don't mind waiting" he said softly to her.

Timothy was a good ally. He usually stand in for her on duty when ever she wants to smoke. She would always use the toilet.

Nessa smiled at him. Her eyes were filled with gratitude . Every other person at work looked down on Timothy because of his awkwardness, but Nessa was the only nice person around. She knew he was the smartest of all their colleagues, a genius lab scientist.

"No not this time Tee".

Timothy replied "Alright".

He pulled open his shelf, took out some snacks and handed it to Nessa.

"You can have this. Cripsy plantain chips and coconut crunch".

Nessa smiled at him "How thoughtful of you. You know I don't eat those". She rejected calmly. "Don't you think you are too old to still be eating those". She teased.

"Maybe that's why I am petite" He laughed.

Timothy's phone rang

"It is Dr Benjamin" he said.

He quickly picked his laptop bag, waved at Nessa and ran off to catch up with Dr Benjamin.

"You can't be here Cherry" Nicholas voiced. He ran to the window to check if Nessa was back "She would be here soon. You better leave".

Nicholas and Cherry has a baby girl together. He was worried Nessa wouldn't appreciate her presence.

"Oh come of it. What will happen? What can she do?" Cherry snapped

Nicholas signaled with his hands to keep her voice down, then replied almost in whisper

"This is her house. Are you not concerned about what me".

Cherry loured

"Come live with me. We can afford a house together. Our son needs you" She comes closer, and rubs his chest gentily and said in a beguiling whisper "I know you want this too".

Nicholas made an attempt to refrain, but she was already sizzling him so well

"Is not that simple Cherry" he said.

She chuckled at his feeble attempt, he was already giving in to the sexual sensation. She ran her fingers down gentily into his thighs. Nicholas grasped and shut his eyes. He felt defeated already and almost ready to risk it all

She stretched her neck to his ear and whispers in an alluring tone.

"We would talk about this later"

Then withdrew herself from him.

Nicholas exhaled with relief, wishing she never stopped. He watched her pick her bag, heading for the door.

As soon as she opened the door, Nessa fell in on her. Cherry jerked on reflex at first, pushing Nessa off her to the floor. Nicholas shivered in fear.

They both exchanged awkward glances then looked back at Nessa, who was snoring on the floor. Cherry took a step away from her, as Nicholas came closer to examine Nessa. She was lying face down.

He squats next to her and hestiatedly turned her over.

She oozed of strong alcohol. Nicholas turned his face in disgust.

"Gosh she drunk again".

Cherry hissed "What piss of shit. What are you doing with her".

Nicholas blurted out, putting a finger to his lips.

"shhhh.. she maybe awake".

"She is snoring. she isn't"

She hissed again and stormed out in anger.

Nicholas doesn't know what to do with Nesa again. She has been emotionally unstable since he knew her, but he doesn't care either.

She owns a house and she is very easy to manipulate, atleast she pretends to be manipulative. What more can he ask for.

He dragged her roughly by her hand and threw her on the couch. He went upstairs, returned shortly with a blanket and threw it next to her.

He felt hungry and headed to the kitchen to make dinner for himself.
