Chapter 16 - Original sin (2)

The air reeked of burning fuel and scorched metal, the inferno all around me and my targets casting long shadows over the docks. Ships and vehicles lay crippled, their flames clawing at the still morning sky as pillars of smoke reached into the heavens.

"Enough of this! We'll deal with you later, Orland. For now…"

The female guard snarled, her glare snapping to me with a predatory focus. Her sword glinted in her hand, its edge eager for blood.

"Oh, I certainly hope so"

Orland sneered, his voice dripping with mockery. He wasted no time scurrying off, a rat fleeing a sinking ship. I didn't bother chasing him. With everything ablaze, there was nowhere far enough for him to run, at least not anywhere I couldn't reach. If he tried, I'd find him.

I said nothing, returning the guard's bloodthirsty glare with a blank stare, unshaken. For a moment, we measured each other, two predators circling, neither willing to make the first move.
