Perhaps thwarted by the Ye Family in C City, Zhang Tinghua drifted aimlessly in C City with her daughter, unable to find a decent job. She had worked as a bar dancer and subsequently as a casual labourer in restaurants to afford Ye Ling's education. Ultimately, the overworked Zhang Tinghua breathed her last in a rundown neighbourhood.
Ye Ling was exactly 12 years old when Zhang Tinghua died. After Zhang Tinghua's death, Ye Ling mysteriously disappeared without a trace. Her record shows a blank from when she was 12 to 18 years old; nobody knew where she had gone.
