Chapter 1 - Elven Journeys: Book One: the Dawn of a Journey

A BOOK SERIES BY WILLIAM TENNANT

Chapter one:

On the continent of Avaloria, a sprawling land of mythical creatures. A desert in the west- A great jungle to the east- Snowcapped mountains to the north and much more.

There was much mystery, with many undiscovered secrets. In the center of the great continent was a large crater surrounded by rocky walls. It was rumored that deep in the Nexis, magic was boosted from the concentration of magic from the five sources- the sun, the earth, the sky, the sea and the moon resulting in a crystal that when activated will grant that elf with incredible power.

To the south of Avaloria, the kingdom of the Earthen elves was in a peaceful time of prosperity.

In the suburban area of the great city, Alia woke up after a long weekend. *Chirp chirp cheep chirp* the birds tweeted. Alia stepped out of bed and yawned, then stretched. She walked over to the window and opened the shutters. The warm morning air marked the start of summer and the end of the school year. A bird flew down from the tree in her backyard and perched on the windowsill.

*cheep cheep chirp!* it peeped, eagerly pecking at the wood. Alia went over to her cabinet and grabbed a handful of birdseed. "Here you go, little guy." she said, dumping the seeds in front of the bird. It looked at the seeds for a few seconds then started to eat them.

Alia was a 16 year old earthen elf. She lived in the kingdom of Terrathia, the earthen nation. Her people were known to be the most powerful magic users. Earthen elves had two horns attached to the top of their heads that pointed backwards and usually had leaves or flowers growing on them. Each one could be up to a foot depending on how old you were, and if you ever had it trimmed. Alia had horns about half a foot long with several leaves on them. She was blonde, a kind of golden brown hair color, and had a streak of green in the braid she usually wore with it drooping down the right side of her chest. But because she just got out of bed, her hair was down and messy. She got dressed and walked to the bathroom and started to comb, brush and style her hair. Then, she brushed her teeth. "Alia, breakfast is ready!" Alia's mom called from downstairs. "Coming!" She said with her mouth full of minty foam. She spat out the toothpaste and finished brushing, then took a gulp of water and went downstairs.

Her little brother, Vidium, had a stack of four pancakes and was stuffing his mouth. "Slow down, Vidium. You might get the hiccups." Alia said. He just stared at her and continued eating pancakes. "Here you go, darling." Her mother said, presenting her with a pancake.

After breakfast, Alia took the plate outside to their backyard and placed it in the washtub. Alia's house was a multi-sectioned hut with each section shaped as a cylinder with a leafy dome roof. It was grown using magic and had four sections- three on the bottom and one on the top. The largest was the living room and the kitchen, which led to the smallest room and the third biggest room. Alia's parent's room, and the stairwell. Up the stairwell was the second largest section which held the bathroom and Alia and her brother's room that was sectioned off by a curtain.

Alia walked into her backyard and found the raspberry bush that grew all over her fence. The region Alia lived in was a dense pine tree forest on top of a major plateau called pinewood plateau, surrounded plains, as well as a small mountain range. She walked over to the bush and plucked some raspberries for a quick snack. She walked in through the backdoor and cross-checked her backpack. She had her spell book, pencils, books, and her wand.. Right! I still have homework to do. Alia thought, pulling out her wand and Intermediate Earth Magic vol.2.

She flipped some pages and found the spell she was working on. It was a vine trap spell. She looked at the rune and the trigger word and set up a dummy outside. The earth arcanum magic's theme included plants and rocks. The sky arcanum included wind and thunder. The sun arcanum included fire and light, the ocean arcanum included water and ice, and the moon arcanum included illusions and shadows.

Alia glanced at the rune again. She took a deep breath and assumed a stance. The tip of the wand started to glow an amber color, so Alia waved the wand in the air, mimicking the rune. A trail of amber light was drawn in the air. She then said the trigger word, but mispronounced and fumbled the word, resulting in nothing. She looked at the pronunciation and tried again but the rune dissipated before she could say the trigger word. She drew the rune again and said it correctly, causing the rune to fire light at the dummy. Vines came up around it, grabbing hold of the dummy as the rune dissipated.

"Nice job, sis!" Vidium yelled from his window. He slid down the roof and landed on the ground. "And he sticks the landing!" he said. "You know dad doesn't like it when you do that." Alia said, looking down at her little brother. "Oh come on. It's not bad if I don't get caught!" Vidium said, scratching his arm.

Her dad walked into the backyard. "Alia, Vidium, time to get to school." he said, handing Vidium his backpack. "Aww! I don't wanna!" He whined. "It's the last week of school! There is a big party planned on friday, and don't you have something exciting to do for the entire week? Plus, Alia is starting the Journey tomorrow!" He explained.

"Oh, right! Yeah! I am really excited- and nervous." Alia said. "You got this. You're the most knowledgeable elf in plants and fungi I have ever met. Don't be nervous." Her dad said. "Thanks dad." Alia replied. "I will miss you, Alia!" Vidium said, hugging her. "I will miss you too." Alia replied.

Alia packed up and put on her backpack, then hugged her mom, dad and brother. "Bye! Love you! See you in august!"

Alia waved goodbye and walked backwards, then turned around and started to walk towards her school. On her way there, she passed by an old play structure. Man, I remember playing on that playground. Playing tag, hide and seek and groundies was so fun. Sometimes I wish I could go back in time for a day and play there. She was too old to play on that old wooden structure. It was practically rotten now- sad. She continued her walk to school, and In a few minutes, the trees became an open field, and she entered the city.
