Chapter 8 - The Hell of Minnesota

As the 1966 Ford Econoline van drove down the desolate highway, Nolan and Pat remained alert. In the darkened sides of the road were various reasons not to sleep. Disfigured creatures watched the van as it passed the corpse of other cryptids.

How in the hell did the Ghost survive out here?

Wait, he was out in all of this?

Yea, originally when shit hit the fan, he had all of us in the Washington Park Super Bunker. He took the PBY Catalina and explored the entire US. I can't imagine what all of this did to his sanity.

Well... He had plenty of experience of being on his own.

What does that mean?

He wasn't always around people when things got bad around him.

Explain, he never went into any details about his past other than minor details.

Well, we all watched him fight his mother, but so many people fail to understand why that battle was something he wanted to avoid. His main goal and wish was for peace and quiet. Being out here was far more sane for him then being around her, or anyone else. As a people pleaser, he was broken. As a human, he couldn't have been further for it. He was a demon of a different kind, not even his former boyfriend could stop what was happening. The Ghost became the monster everyone who'd hurt him wanted him to be. His mother wanted someone to blame, my ex wanted the power and control over him, the Ghost became something other than human. So with all of that, I'd say he felt right at home out here. Fighting every non-human, trying his best to be a hero amongst villains and traitors.

When you put it into perspective, the Ghost is a clear victim, who kept on killing himself.

There is a quote, "You collect scars because you want proof that you are paying for whatever sins you've committed." He was the living embodiment of that. He is the definition of the token sunshine character who'd finally snapped and was made the bad guy. You were around him at lots, what was he like?

Dawg... He was feral, crazy even. Standing up to people, thugs, and just anyone who made the noise in his own head get too loud. When we began to fight amongst each other, you should've seen it. While he belonged to no selective click in the group, everyone else feared him, feared him with the respect he deserved. Nobody dared to make him stand up. We used booze and acid to keep him at bay. None of us could've predicted that he was using all of that booze and those drugs to push himself. He never claimed to be a villain Nolan, that's the scary part. He was content watching this world burn just to ease a fraction of the pain he and others had inflicted on himself. He was there for all of us when we fell and wanted to go dark, but nobody came for him, nobody saved him when he fell.

Nolan looked at the Overlord as the van kept driving. His best friend from childhood memory was gone, rather, he'd become someone else, someone willing to do about anything to maintain his peace and his quiet.

SHIT!

The Overlord swerves the van away from a horde of Specimen Z zombies and almost loses control of it. However, something else had plans for them. Beings from the forest began to pour out behind the van. They took chase after it as the Overlord and Nolan tried to stay alive, tried to keep out of their reach.

THAT PISTOL OF YOURS MIGHT JUST HELP US!

AGAINST ALL OF THEM?! I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH ROUNDS!

As Nolan looked out the window at the chaos unfolding behind them. As the van sped down the freeway, a disfigured creature broke out of the tree line and knocked the van sideways.

HOLD ON!

As the tires squealed and the van was on the verge of tipping, they passed the sign, "Now leaving Minnesota." However, the cryptids were keeping up with the van as the two drove deeper into the Midwest of the United States of America.

As the duo managed to regain control of the van, Pat stuck is pistol out of the window, and put a round into the creatures eye, causing it to shriek. Their ears bleed as the sound bombarded their ears. As they entered Iowa, the were more and more cryptids, however, the shrieking cryptid threw the van off the road and sent it rolling into a overgrown cornfield with both Nolan and the Overlord unconscious.
