Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: From behind the scenes.

Hui Jian circled around the warehouse district, keeping to the shadows as he assessed the layout. The Jade Fist Clan had posted guards at every entrance, but he could see that they were overconfident. Their positioning was strong but predictable, leaving gaps in their line of sight. Hui Jian's lips curled into a faint smile. Overconfidence could be exploited.

He needed a way in, but brute force wasn't an option. Not yet. Instead, he decided to wait, knowing that the Red River Sect would soon make their move. His role in this game was not to strike first, but to control the outcome. The Mind Flower Gu in his aperture buzzed softly, feeding his thoughts with possibilities, each one expanding into layers of strategy.

As the hours passed, the cold night deepened. The streets grew silent, the only sounds were the occasional shuffle of boots or the distant murmur of guards talking amongst themselves. Hui Jian remained hidden, his breath controlled, waiting for the right moment. And then, he saw it—the subtle flicker of movement on the rooftop across the street. The Red River Sect had arrived.

They moved like shadows, blending seamlessly into the night. At least six of them, their figures barely discernible in the darkness. They crept closer to the warehouse, their movements practiced and precise. Each member carried a Gu worm in their palm, ready to strike. Hui Jian's eyes narrowed. These were not common foot soldiers—they were assassins, highly trained and highly dangerous.

The leader of the group, a tall figure clad in dark robes, signaled with a hand motion, and the others began to spread out, positioning themselves around the building. The leader moved toward the rear entrance, where the guard presence was weakest. Hui Jian watched in silence, his mind calculating their approach, noting their tactics.

It was a well-executed plan. The Red River Sect intended to slip in quietly, eliminate the guards, and take the shipment without alerting the rest of the city. But Hui Jian wasn't about to let that happen without making his own move.

As the Red River Sect began their infiltration, Hui Jian moved closer, his steps light as air. He had no intention of engaging directly with the sect, but he needed to be inside when the chaos erupted. His eyes scanned the nearby buildings, searching for an entry point.

He found it—a small window, just above one of the adjacent warehouses. With practiced ease, he scaled the wall, pulling himself up to the ledge. The window was unlocked, and he slipped inside without making a sound. The interior of the building was dark, but the faint glow of moonlight filtering through cracks in the roof gave him enough visibility.

Hui Jian crouched low, listening for any sign of movement. The warehouse was mostly empty, save for a few scattered crates and broken barrels. He made his way toward the far wall, where he found another window, this one overlooking the Jade Fist Clan's warehouse.

From this vantage point, Hui Jian could see the Red River Sect's assassins moving swiftly, silently eliminating the guards stationed at the rear of the building. One by one, the Jade Fist guards fell, their bodies collapsing without a sound. The leader of the Red River Sect signaled again, and the remaining assassins moved to secure the perimeter.

Hui Jian's pulse quickened. This was it—the moment he had been waiting for. With the guards neutralized, the Red River Sect would soon gain access to the shipment. But Hui Jian wasn't interested in the materials themselves. What he wanted was leverage, and he had just the plan to get it.

As the Red River Sect moved to enter the warehouse, Hui Jian slipped out of the adjacent building and made his way toward the rear of the warehouse. He found the bodies of the guards, their throats cleanly slit, and quickly removed one of their amulets—a jade token that marked them as a member of the Jade Fist Clan. He tucked the amulet into his cloak, already forming the next step of his plan.

With the token in hand, Hui Jian moved swiftly, slipping back into the shadows just as the Red River Sect assassins entered the warehouse. From his hidden vantage point, he watched as they began to load the shipment onto their carts, moving with silent efficiency.

It was almost too easy.

But Hui Jian knew better than to underestimate either faction. The Red River Sect had executed their plan flawlessly, but the Jade Fist Clan wouldn't let this go unanswered. A confrontation was inevitable, and when it came, Hui Jian intended to be far from the center of it.

He waited until the Red River Sect finished loading the shipment, then slipped away into the night, leaving no trace of his presence. As he moved through the darkened streets, his mind buzzed with the possibilities that lay ahead.

By the time the Jade Fist Clan discovered the theft, it would be too late. The Red River Sect would have already escaped with the shipment, and the city would be on the verge of open war. And when that happened, Hui Jian would be there, ready to capitalize on the chaos.

The dark alleys of Lanternrock stretched out before Hui Jian as he made his way back toward his hideout. The faint flicker of lanterns and the distant sound of footsteps filled the night, but Hui Jian was a ghost, unseen and unnoticed as he slipped through the maze of streets. The stolen jade amulet rested in his palm, a token that would soon become a key piece in his next move.

His Mind Flower Gu worked tirelessly, churning through the web of possibilities. The theft of the Jade Fist Clan's shipment would set off a chain of events that would ripple through the city. The Jade Fist Clan would retaliate against the Red River Sect, and the two factions would be drawn into open conflict. Hui Jian's goal was simple: to create chaos and profit from it.

As he approached the outskirts of the city, his thoughts turned to his dwindling resources. His recent advances in cultivation had drained his primeval stones faster than he had anticipated. The Red River Sect's payment for his role in the theft would help, but it wouldn't last long. He needed to secure a more stable source of income if he was to continue his rise in Lanternrock.

As if on cue, a figure stepped out of the shadows ahead of him. Hui Jian's hand instinctively moved toward the hilt of his dagger, but he relaxed when he recognized the figure—Ku Fang, the captain of the Iron Thorn Mercenaries.

"You've been busy," Ku Fang said, his voice a low growl.

Hui Jian's eyes narrowed. "What do you want?"

Ku Fang smirked. "Word travels fast in Lanternrock. I heard about the shipment. The Jade Fist Clan is in an uproar."

Hui Jian remained silent, his mind racing. He hadn't expected word to spread so quickly, but it didn't matter. He had anticipated this. Ku Fang was a valuable ally, but he was also a dangerous man. The Iron Thorn Mercenaries operated on the fringes of the city's power struggles, and their loyalty was for sale to the highest bidder.

Ku Fang stepped closer, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of curiosity and greed. "I've got a proposition for you."

Hui Jian's expression didn't change, but his curiosity was piqued. "I'm listening."

"The Jade Fist Clan is planning to hit back. They're putting together a team to track down the Red River Sect's supply routes. They're offering a hefty reward for anyone who brings them information."

Hui Jian's mind buzzed with possibilities. He had expected the Jade Fist Clan to retaliate, but this was an opportunity he hadn't foreseen. He could play both sides, feeding information to the Jade Fist Clan while remaining in the shadows of the Red River Sect's operations. It was dangerous, but the rewards could be immense.

"And you want me to get involved?" Hui Jian asked, his voice measured.

Ku Fang shrugged. "I figure you've got your hands in enough pots already. Why not add another?"

Hui Jian's eyes narrowed. "And what's in it for you?"

Ku Fang chuckled. "The Iron Thorn Mercenaries don't work for free, but we're always open to partnerships. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours."

Hui Jian considered the offer. The Iron Thorn Mercenaries had access to resources and information he couldn't acquire on his own. Working with them would give him an edge, but it also meant sharing some of the spoils.

After a moment, Hui Jian nodded. "Fine. But I'm not taking orders from anyone."

Ku Fang grinned. "Wouldn't dream of it. We'll talk more soon. Keep your ears open. Things are about to get interesting."

With that, Ku Fang turned and disappeared back into the shadows, leaving Hui Jian alone with his thoughts. The city of Lanternrock was a cauldron of ambition, greed, and power, and Hui Jian intended to stir it to the boiling point.

He slipped away into the night, his mind already weaving new schemes. The pieces were falling into place, and soon, Lanternrock would be torn apart by the conflicts he had helped to set in motion. And when the dust settled, Hui Jian would be standing above the wreckage, ready to claim what was rightfully his.

But first, he needed to secure his position. His resources were dwindling, and the time had come to make his next move.

As Hui Jian approached his hideout, he couldn't shake the feeling that the city was watching him, waiting for the inevitable storm to break. He had become a key player in the struggle for power, and with each step, his enemies and allies grew in number.

Inside the modest room that served as his temporary sanctuary, Hui Jian sat cross-legged on the cold floor. His aperture thrummed with the energy of the Mind Flower Gu, fueling his thoughts and sharpening his mental clarity. The chaos of the city, the shifting alliances, the opportunities for wealth and power—all of it flowed through him like a river of potential.

He reached into his pouch and withdrew a small vial of concentrated primeval stones, pouring their essence into his aperture. The power filled him, replenishing his reserves, but it was not enough. He would need more if he were to continue refining his Gu and preparing for the battles ahead.

With his energy restored, Hui Jian began to lay out his plans for the coming days. The Red River Sect had succeeded in stealing the Jade Fist Clan's supplies, but the real battle was just beginning. He would feed information to the Jade Fist Clan, guiding them into traps and ambushes while ensuring that the Red River Sect remained unaware of his duplicity.

The Mind Flower Gu pulsed, creating new pathways in his thoughts, weaving together strategies that would allow him to profit from both sides. It was a dangerous game, but Hui Jian had always thrived in the shadows, manipulating events from behind the scenes.
