Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

The werewolf monarch, King Zane, was experiencing restlessness as he prepped for his impending meeting with the eldest of the clan. He was aware of the pressing matters awaiting him, such as the recent attacks initiated by the rogue pack situated beyond their borders. He knew that the elders would likely also raise the subject of his mate, or the deficit thereof, as their race regarded the pairing of males and females in a union as significant and crucial.

He had neither soul mate nor companion to soothe his wolfish proclivity or alleviate the load of responsibility placed upon him. His search for a suitable companion over the years was unsuccessful. He made himself content with the prospect of ruling alone, yet the elders were not satisfied. They pushed him to seek a compatible partner who could bear his child and insure the continuation of the realm.

He sighed as he put on the royal attire he had prepared, consisting of a deep blue cloak with silver embellishments and a matching tunic and trousers. He placed a silver crown upon his head, representing his status as the alpha of all the werewolves. This caused him to reflect upon his situation as he peered at himself in the mirror. At that moment, he wondered whether true happiness would ever be realized in his life.

He left his chambers and ventured into the courtroom where the elders sat, waiting patiently for his arrival. They were the most aged and knowledgeable members of the pack, acting as his advisors since he had taken command after succeeding his father. They greeted him with the courtesy and politeness befitting a monarch. After being granted permission to sit, the elders returned the respectful gesture through bowing when he took his position at the table's leading end.

Upon ordering a servant to deliver refreshments, the meeting convened. They deliberated regarding the incessant attacks enacted by the rogue pack, which had become more intense and hostile. Solutions consisting of implementing more patrols, fortifying their defenses, and even negotiating with the rogue leader's counterparts were discussed thoroughly. Each option was carefully evaluated with an emphasis on its advantages and disadvantages.

"Your Majesty, our quick and decisive response is a paramount necessity. The rogue pack poses a threat to the peaceful and secure existence of our kingdom. Their consistent aggression has resulted in numerous fatalities of our fellow brethren and the loss of livestock. They exhibit no indication of ceasing their actions. Thus, they must be eradicated or banished from our realm," Elder Rolfe stated, firmly and seriously, with no leniency or weakness in his tone.

"I endorse your sentiment, Elder Rolfe. The rogue pack's flagrant defiance is unacceptable. They possess no regard for the authority or proper hierarchy of the clans. They have brought disgrace upon us. It is our responsibility to firmly establish our rightful authority and dominance over our territory," said Elder Mara, her eyes flickering with rage as she addressed the situation.

"Your concerns are acknowledged and shared, Elders. I concur with the importance of exercising restraint and caution. The rogue pack is not comprised of a meager or weak force. They boast of a massive army of warriors and fighters, which makes them difficult to confront. They are also sly and merciless, so they will surely refuse to surrender or retreat easily. If a conflict should arise, then we must anticipate a prolonged and brutal war," claimed Alpha Zane, maintaining a tranquil and collected manner as he spoke.

"We might endeavor to communicate with them first. There might be a chance that we could strike a settlement or compromise. Maybe we can convince them to retreat from our domain without hostility. Or we could potentially influence them to join our pack under your authority. There may be chances that we can avert needless conflict and bloodshed," Elder Nia expressed with gentleness and optimism.

"While your suggestion is noble and wise, Elder Nia, I am of the opinion that it may prove to be idealistic and impractical. The rogue pack lacks the interest and inclination towards peace and harmony. They are guided solely by their insatiable desire for wealth and power. They lack the capacity to accept reason or abide by logicality. They only respect force and fear. They will not abide by your presence or heed your statements unless you instill fear into their hearts." Elder Rolfe spoke firmly and harshly.

The discussion continued with the elders providing different viewpoints and propositions. King Zane remained an attentive observer, but his emotions were confounded and divided. He yearned to safeguard his pack and his empire, yet he also wished to avoid unnecessary casualties and suffering. He had the desire for someone who could assist him with making a suitable choice and also provide comfort and support.

Upon predicting so, they shifted the focus to his personal affairs. They reminded him of his duty to locate a companion and create an heir. They brought up the notion of possible suitors out of other clans. They requested him to assess the options provided and to attend the impending mating festival, thereby allowing him the opportunity to meet more prospective females.

"Your Majesty, you represent the physical manifestation of our culture's finest features. The pack has numerous women who admire you, along with external beauties. Your presence warrants an abundance of choices. Why not pick a charming wolfess who could be by your side?" Elder Rina voiced, employing honeyed words and a flirtatious tone for her proposition.

He attentively heard the arguments, yet internalized his annoyance. The statements had been expressed to him before, and they held no influence or importance to him. He desired a partner who would genuinely love him, rather than covet his status and power. He was also longing for a companion who would be his equal and his confidant. His wish for a soulmate, though he was aware he did not possess one, remained strong.

He graciously declined their ideas, explaining that he would attend the mating festival out of politeness and decorum. He hoped that the matter would be dropped, but he was aware that their attempts to influence him wouldn't stop. He anticipated they'd continue pressing him until he submitted to their will or discovered someone else capable of making him content prior to ending the discussion and departing to his lodgings.
