 EMERSON

As the morning sun lazily streamed into my room, I luxuriated in the embrace of my bed, having decided to take a break from university for the day. Unexpectedly, a knock echoed through my door, prompting me to rise. To my astonishment, Jules stood at my doorstep, holding a birthday cake and exclaiming, 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY!' A surreal moment unfolded before me, shattering my expectations. Amidst the stillness, she wished me well, and a warm hug ensued, followed by gratitude for her unexpected gesture. Amidst laughter and jokes, she entered, bearing a swan necklace with the words "pour toujours" engraved—a symbol of our unbreakable bond. Overjoyed, we decided to spend the day together. The unconventional breakfast of cake was already consumed by her before arriving, adding a touch of whimsy to our celebration.

Venturing outdoors, rain kissed the earth gently, creating a serene ambiance. Choosing a coffee shop with a window view, we ordered our drinks."Are you enjoying the university scene?" Jules inquired.

Perplexed, I sought clarification, and she elaborated, "Your university career. Are you looking for a job? Independence is crucial post-graduation.""Indeed, I am searching for a job," I assured her. When she broached amore personal topic, her curiosity piqued.

"Why don't you ever talk about your family? Why do you live alone?"With a deep breath, I decided to reveal my hidden past. "In the years gone by, I rarely shared this part of my life. I hail from a once-loving family. Tragedy struck at 17 when my mother, an independent woman, died in a car accident. My father, overwhelmed by grief, turned to drug sand found solace in another woman. Unfortunately, her kindness did not extend to me. Witnessing my father's affection wane, I resorted to lies. The painful truth is, he didn't even call me. Graduating and securing a job here, I hoped for his acknowledgment, but it never came. And so, I find myself here—alone," I concluded, laying bare the scars of my past.Sympathetic, Jules assured, "You are not alone. I'm always here." As a solemn pause enveloped us, she redirected the conversation, "Why mar this day when it's your birthday, champ?"
