"Wan'an, what did you say?"
"I didn't hear what you said after that. Is the signal not good?"
Han Jingnian spoke twice in a row, but there was no response from Xia Wan'an.
Han Jingnian took his cell phone away from his ear, glanced at the top of the screen, saw full bars of signal and then held the phone back to his ear. "An'an? Can you hear me?"
"An'an...."
The call was abruptly hung up.
Han Jingnian listened to the busy tone, slightly furrowing his brow before he tapped the screen twice and dialed back.
After the call connected, it was immediately hung up after a single ring.
Han Jingnian dialed again, this time an icy, official female voice answered: "I'm sorry, the number you've dialed is switched off."
Switched off? Why would she suddenly switch off her phone? Was her phone out of battery?
Han Jingnian was at a loss, feeling unease welling up in his heart.
