Chapter 5 - Chapter 0005: The 1960s 1_1

Without having filled the space, Feng Qingxue woke up from a deep sleep and found that she had been transported into a different body in a different location.

Sitting inside the dilapidated straw shed that was drafty from all sides, Feng Qingxue was dumbfounded.

After being shocked, she felt like crying but no tears would come.

Her stomach was convulsing, a clear result of hunger.

Clutching her stomach, Feng Qingxue's first reaction was to check her space. She discovered that the items stored in it had traveled with her. Nothing was missing. Relieved, Feng Qingxue took a deep breath.

Fortunately, she had her space and all the resources it contained, so she would not lack food and clothing.

In life, the most crucial things are food, clothing, shelter, and travel, with food and clothing being paramount.

As long as you have these two things, you won't freeze or starve to death.

Taking in her surroundings, she found herself in the middle of the night. The straw shed was situated at the back of the Feng family's small thatched house and was rather secluded. No one would come here, and no one would find out.

Feng Qingxue carefully took out a bowl of white porridge from the space. As she sipped the porridge, she reflected on her circumstances.

She had been reincarnated into the body of an eighteen-year-old girl.

This girl was also named Feng Qingxue, ten years younger than her, and had a much harsher fate.

Feng Qingxue was born into a family that favored boys over girls during the Sino-Japanese War era and had never lived a peaceful day in her life.

In a family that prefers boys to girls, what girl could live a good life?

Under the threat of the Japanese and the atmosphere of her family, Feng Qingxue was never fed or clothed adequately. After surviving through fear and hardship every day till the founding of the nation and learning a few words in literacy classes, she found herself facing years of natural disasters just a few years later.

It was the disaster that persisted from the late 1950s to the early 1960s.

To leave the scarce food for their descendants, Feng Qingxue's grandparents committed suicide one after another.

Feng Qingxue's parents, who also favored boys over girls, starved to death one by one to save food for their sons and grandsons. Yet, their two married sons disregarded their sisters Feng Qingxue and Feng Qingyun entirely.

Just when Feng Qingxue had just turned eighteen, she was driven out of the family by her brothers and their wives, with her little sister Feng Qingyun, to fend for themselves.

In the era of famine, food was precious, much more valuable than Gold.

Food can fill stomachs and save lives, but Gold cannot.

During the period of communal dining, each person had less than 3 taels of coarse grains to eat.

Feng Qingxue's reincarnation was ill-timed. The communal dining had just disbanded.

After the autumn harvest this year, the production team had distributed leftover grains to each family after turning over the required portion to the state. While Feng Qingxue's brothers and their wives tightly controlled their family's food rations, even though it was just a daily average of 3 taels of coarse grain, it was enough to survive.

Alas, Feng Qingxue and her sister were pitiful. They were unable to get even one tael of food into their mouths each day.

After the distribution of food, they were expelled from the house. Combined, the two of them had less than thirty jin of sweet potatoes.

Due to their shared plight, Feng Qingxue doted on her little sister, who lost her parents to famine and received no attention from her brothers and sisters-in-law. She gave most of the already scarce food rations to her sister, which led to her own starvation and eventual demise.

Feng Qingxue died one night in late autumn, undiscovered.

Feng Qingxue's brothers and their wives wouldn't come to the grass shed behind the house unless it was important. Feng Qingyun, although she lived in the same straw pile as Feng Qingxue, was just five years old and was in a deep sleep.

Long-term hunger made Feng Qingxue's appetite extremely small. Feng Qingxue did not dare to eat and drink too much; half a bowl of porridge filled her up.

After putting the remaining half bowl of porridge into the space, Feng Qingxue finally had time under the moonlight to take a good look at her sister.
