6 MONTHS EARLIER, AZORA, ROMANIA
DAY 1
Breathing hard, I almost fell down on my knees with exhaustion. I tried to drew up air on my lungs as much as I could but it's like breathing underwater.
No matter how hard I inhale, the oxygen cannot reach my lungs and spots began to dance in my vision.
"Guys, wait!"
Nellius shouted, immediately rushing by my side.
If it weren't for his hold on my back, I would have stumbled faced down to the moist ground already.
"Damn it, Carlisle. You should've let me carry you yet you're so damn stubborn" he reprimanded.
Distress evident in his tone. Swinging my arm around his neck, he carried me bride style before rushing to a nearby redwood root to sit me down.
His hands immediately went on my back, patting and bending me down until I am forced to suck air. Scrambling, he hastily removed my backpack, shuffling to search for my inhaler.
"Shane…" I wheezed, coughing and tearing up due to the burn on my chest.
"She has the bag…inhaler"
Nellie cursed.
His fingers gripped his blonde hair, pacing and shouting at the top of his lungs to the rest that were mere silhouettes on top of the hill.
We are left behind for a quite distance due to my pace and my asthma that is far in contrast with my adventurous friends.
The rest of them is almost on top and if I'm not mistaken, is now, planting the flag while we are still stuck in this plane.
"Guys!"
Nellie shouted, all the while patting my back.
Tears clouded my vision and I leaned into his touch, wheezing harder.
"SHAAAANE!" he shouted again.
This time the volume of his voice had Shane's head and Tasha's turning towards us.
"What's wrong?"
Shane shouted back, pausing from climbing the hill.
"Bring me the goddamn inhaler!"
"What?!" she moved closer down from the hill's top.
A series of coughing fit rattled my chest and Nellie patted my back harder.
"Fuck! The inhaler. NOW! It's Carlisle"
The burning in my chest worsened that I began to lose consciousness and double over.
My head uselessly hung low and Nellie's hand pinched my mouth open, urging me to keep breathing despite how every inhale hurts.
"Fucking hell, why in the gods above did you take the bag?"
I hear the distant sound of Nellie's cursing a while later.
"She's struggling to carry it" a feminine voice argued before more shuffling.
I don't know how much time had passed or how I even managed before the mouth of an inhaler is shoved into my gasping one and I can finally breathe.
"That's it, Carly. Keep breathing"
I hear Nellie's voice urging me and I followed it, desperately pulling every breath despite the bitter tase of the inhaler on my tongue.
It is after a good five minutes until I finally recovered and I feel the back of Nellie's hands wiping my tears away.
Slumping towards his hold, he adjusted our position so I could sit more comfortably and breathe easier.
"Oh, Carly"
I hear Shane sigh.
"You will be the first one to get zombified if zombies will chase us now"
She made an attempt to joke and I wheezed out a laugh despite how funny and sad it is at the same time.
I am made for indoors and don't get me wrong, I do love outdoor activities if it wasn't for my weak lungs and body.
I should've stayed behind but I cannot stand another summer where I am stuck in my room with the heat.
The city is stifling and the nature would be a nice break.
"What's up here?"
Tasha asked, approaching and wiping the sweat on her tanned skin.
"Vse v poryadke, Carlisle?"
I gave a weak nod.
"I can manage, yeah"
Tracy, the tallest, oldest and probably the strongest among six of us picked up my backpack and slung it on one muscular arm.
The perks of being a young Russian body builder.
She picked Nellie's next, tossing it to Shane who catches it, groaning and stumbling with the weight of it.
"Take as much time as you could, sweetheart. And Nellius, be a man and carry the poor girl or I'll pummel your pretty face with my fist"
Tasha threatened and Nellie groaned while I tried to suppress my smile.
"I did offer" he murmured and Tasha narrowed her eyes at him.
"Fine, fine. Yeah, I will"
Nellius sighed when both Tasha and Shane took our backpacks with them up to the hill again where the lovebirds are already making out.
I stared up at Nellie's face and he looked down at me, evident concern and worry written in his handsome face.
"U good?" he asked.
I clutch the inhaler on one hand, taking a final lungful before nodding.
True to his words, Nellie carried me all the way up to the hill.
By the time we reached the top, he's breathing hard and I decided to give him some reprieve.
However, when I insist that he let me walk, he just blatantly ignores me until we reached our destination where the rest is waiting.
It isn't until we joined the group before he gently placed me down and together, we all stared down at the view around us, already forgetting about the inhaler incident.
"It's beautiful" Nellius murmured and we shared a smile.
We took a minute to admire the beauty around us, breathing in the air of freedom after a stressful semester.
"Ugh, this is perfect" Jamie quipped.
Grinning in that way of his that deepened the dimple on his cheeks.
"Your wish of making love underneath the stars would be fulfilled tonight, baby" he told this to Janine who giggled and they began to eat each other's faces.
In front of us.
"Gross"
Shane faked a gag.
"Don't place your tents beside mine"
Tasha tossed Nellie's bag to Jamie, breaking of their kiss.
"What was that for?" Jamie whined, dramatically clutching a hand to his chest while Janine kicked Nellie's bag away, giggling.
Nellie groaned, leaving my side to pick up his discarded pack.
I chuckled, shaking my head.
"Alright then fellas, we're camping here"
Jamie announced and we all settled down our belongings and began to make camp.
It would be a memorable summer vacation.
And in the end, it did become memorable. Just not in the way that any of us had expected.
