Baley looked around. The guards were dead or dying.
One of them had fainted. Another was groaning, holding his stomach. The others were struggling feebly to stand up, though none seemed able to manage it. He picked up his phone and called someone.
He was answered immediately.
"Hello, Dr. Delmarre," he said.
"Is everything all right?" Dr. Delmarre sounded surprised.
"No, it is not. Thank you very much."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Baley; I didn't expect anything like this. What happened?"
"Neither did I. But it seems that we can use this place for our purposes. We don't know how long it will last, so I think we'd better get out of here. Send backup as soon as possible."
Jay got up and began reloading his gun. It was a good gun. It held only two bullets. There were four guards left alive, including Baley. He wouldn't have much ammunition left.
