"But what if I miss some really cool thing happening right behind the gym? Like, maybe the janitors will catch an escaped monkey, and I'll never get another chance to see it? Or maybe the principal will announce that the cafeteria is serving strawberry ice cream today. Then I'll never know, and it'll haunt me forever. My life will be ruined."
"Your life has been ruined for years, Keith. Remember all those times you failed the spelling tests?"
"Yeah, but—"
"And don't forget the time Mrs. Larkin took away your computer privileges for a whole month because she found a gambling site in your browser history? Or how about the time Mr. Smith called your parents, demanding to know who stole his wallet and then ran off with it?"
"Okay, yeah, but I still think I'd rather take my chances than miss out on something exciting." He looked toward the sky, where a few clouds drifted lazily across the sun. "Besides, nothing's going to happen until after school. I promise."
