His wife had died. His children had grown up and moved far away. His friends all lived across the country, and he rarely visited them.
His health was failing, and he needed to mentally prepare himself for what was coming.
Still, he was grateful to be alive.
Over the past couple months, he has learned more about himself and what matters in life. He'd rediscovered his passion for helping people. And he'd started making plans to share his newfound wisdom with others.
For the first time since his diagnosis, he felt hopeful.
Then again, maybe it was just wishful thinking. After all, he might have been dying long ago anyway.
Either way, he decided he wouldn't let death steal this last bit of joy from him. This was especially true given the abundance of those in need.
