"Oh yeah?" asked another man. "What do we have?" Something special is planned?"
A third laughed. "You know what I mean, John! We've got something big, and if we're careful, we'll get away cleanly!"
"Yeah, sure." John shook his head. "We won't need any help. What if the cops come after us?"
The fourth man spoke. His voice sounded tired. "Why would the cops care? They haven't done anything for years, anyway."
"That's true," said John. "And if they don't catch us now, we can just leave town and disappear again. That's how criminals work, right? If we get caught, we just run away. Nobody cares about us."
"Yeah," said the other man. "Nobody gives a damn about the little guy."
"True." John nodded.
Jason crept closer. This wasn't positive news. He needed to stop this before it escalated. He tried to listen to what they were saying, but he didn't hear anything useful.
