Lux's gaze landed on a table filled with glass canisters—each one containing the same blue liquid she had seen before. She moved closer, reaching for one. "This isn't just a battery," she whispered.
A sudden click of a gun safety stop sent a chill down their spines.
"Step away from that," a voice ordered.
They turned slowly. Evelyn stood at the entrance, flanked by two armed guards. Her eyes were sharp, her expression unreadable.
Lux raised his hands slightly, playing it calm. "Evelyn. Didn't take you for the late-night shift."
Evelyn didn't lower the gun. "You shouldn't be here, Lux. Neither should you, Chloe. I'm giving you the chance to stand down."
Chloe took a step forward, unshaken. "Then tell us what this liquid really is. You don't go to this level of security for a 'battery.'"Evelyn's jaw tightened. "You don't understand what you're interfering with."
