Gu Beixian's eyes slightly darkened as he inquired, "Has your sister awakened?"
Chu Mo recalled what Chu Suosuo had said, feeling irritated. "She woke up early, articulate and lively, not at all like someone who had been unconscious all night."
Sensing an underlying meaning in Chu Mo's words, Gu Beixian asked, "What happened?"
Chu Mo didn't elaborate, only stating, "Yesterday at the construction site, the worker who threw down the iron bucket, have someone investigate properly. It might be useful in the future."
Gu Beixian keenly caught onto the word "throw."
Thinking back to the reactions of Chu Yanru, Hua Qirou, and others last night, he understood some things.
"Thank you," he said, turning to leave.
In the car, he made a call to his assistant, instructing, "Investigate the worker who threw down the iron bucket at the construction site yesterday afternoon. Handle it discreetly and don't let anyone know. It might be useful later."
He deliberately emphasized the word "throw."
His assistant had been by his side for a long time and immediately grasped the hidden meaning behind "throw."
"Understood, Mr. Gu. I'll take care of it," he promptly replied.
Gu Beixian made a low hum, hung up the phone, and instructed the driver, "To the company."
As the car moved, he received a call from Hua Qirou, "Beixian, your father said you went to the hospital. Why haven't we seen you yet? Suosuo just woke up and has been calling your name. She suffered a head injury and is a bit confused, forgetting everyone but you."
If this had been ten minutes ago, Gu Beixian might have felt guilty hearing her words. But now, he felt only a sense of falseness.
A group of people had conspired and staged a play, targeting him alone. Truly, they had gone to great lengths.
Gu Beixian responded dispassionately, "I have urgent matters to attend to. Suosuo has all of you to take care of her; I trust she's in good hands."
"But..."
"I'm busy," Gu Beixian cut off the call.
A few minutes later, Gu Aoting called, questioning, "Beixian, what's going on? Suosuo got injured because of you, and considering the Gu and Chu families' cooperation, publicly and privately, shouldn't you be there with her?"
Gu Beixian's brows furrowed slightly colder.
He didn't know if this matter was related to him or not.
Regardless, he was an accomplice.
Gu Beixian responded in a detached tone, "I stayed by her bedside all night and worked all day at the company. I'm human, not made of iron. The company has more than just me. If you're so concerned about her, go and accompany her yourself. I'm tired and going home to rest."
Without waiting for a response, he ended the call.
Soon after, Gu Aoting called again.
Gu Beixian glanced at the screen, turned off the phone, placed it on the seat, rubbed his forehead, and instructed the driver, "Take me home."
"Yes, Mr. Gu."
Back at the Moon Bay villa, as soon as Gu Beixian entered, Su Huai came to greet him, silently helping him untie his tie.
Her big eyes scanned his clothes attentively, and despite the predicament set up by the Chu family, Gu Beixian had been feeling quite irritated.
Seeing her like this, he suddenly smiled.
Accustomed to her gentle demeanor, seeing her occasionally mischievous side was truly adorable.
He reached out to pat her head gently, speaking softly, "No need to check. When I left the hospital this morning, Chu Suosuo hadn't woken up. My father asked me to visit her this afternoon, but I didn't enter the ward. I left without being hugged by her or smelling her scent, let alone giving her the chance to kiss me."
Caught in her little scheme, Su Huai blushed, retorting, "I wasn't checking. I just saw you were tired and wanted to help you untie your tie."
A faint smile played at the corners of Gu Beixian's eyes.
He liked how Su Huai cared about him, yet he didn't want her to feel jealous or upset.
Quite contradictory.
He took off his suit jacket.
Su Huai took it and hung it on the rack, asking, "Has Suosuo woken up?"
Gu Beixian slightly furrowed his brows imperceptibly, replying, "Yes."
Su Huai gazed into his eyes, calmly asking, "Are you still going to visit her tonight?"
Gu Beixian paused, then lifted her into his arms, planting a butterfly kiss on her forehead, "Not going."
"What about tomorrow?"
"Not tomorrow either," he murmured, lowering his head to kiss her cheek, then moving to her lips, her neck, finally nibbling on her earlobe, nonchalantly saying, "Not any day. Spending time with my wife is paramount. The world is vast, but my wife comes first."
Su Huai's ears turned red, the little flames of affection he ignited in her heart leaping up, making her feel tingly all over.
Thinking to herself, this man is becoming more and more skilled.
Initially, she had been quite upset when he didn't return all night.
Yet, with just a few words, he managed to soothe half of her grievances.
He truly had her under his spell.
Perhaps, this was what love was about.
In love, the one who cares more is always the loser, as if he were just standing there, doing nothing, yet piercing through her heart.
A kiss from him, and she could forget many troubles.
Three days later.
Grandma called, inviting Su Huai and Gu Beixian to their house for dinner on Saturday.
Since returning from her grandmother's funeral, Su Huai hadn't seen her grandmother and was quite eager, so she readily agreed.
Come Saturday, while it was still daylight, she had the driver take her there early.
This visit felt entirely different from the last.
Last time, it was about divorce, bidding farewell to her grandmother, a heavy-hearted affair.
This time, it felt much lighter.
When Grandma saw her, she rushed over, holding her hand tightly as if she had found a lost treasure, exclaiming, "Who is this? Let Grandma have a look. Whose big girl is this? Why are you so beautiful?"
Su Huai sweetly smiled, mimicking her tone, "I'm your precious granddaughter-in-law."
Grandma cupped her face in her hands, rubbing and patting it, reluctant to let go, "Oh, my precious granddaughter-in-law, you've come back. After you left last time, Grandma couldn't eat for days, couldn't sleep at night, sighing all the time, saying we, the old Gu family, wronged you."
Su Huai's heart clenched, choking up, "I'm sorry, Grandma."
"Don't blame you, don't blame you. Blame my rotten grandson and son," Grandma said, leading her to sit on the sofa.
Su Huai's eyes welled up, but hearing Grandma speak so frankly almost made
her laugh.
Only Grandma dared to speak like that.
If it were someone else, who would dare to try?
Half an hour later, Gu Beixian arrived.
Grandma instructed the servant to bring out the dishes.
The four of them sat around the table, eating and chatting.
Grandma picked up a piece of braised sea cucumber and put it in Su Huai's bowl, "Eat more sea cucumber. It's natural and pollution-free. Eating it can increase your resistance and make it easier to conceive, so you can give me a big, fat grandchild."
Su Huai felt a bit embarrassed and glanced at Gu Beixian discreetly.
Gu Beixian's hand reached under the table, holding hers, his fingertips lightly tracing a path in her palm.
The tingling sensation made Su Huai's heart itch.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
The servant hurried over to open it.
Su Huai turned her head.
Seeing Gu Aoting leading Chu Suosuo in, her smile froze on her face.
Not just her, but the faces of the three people sitting at the table also looked grim.
Grandma narrowed her eyes, angrily questioning Gu Aoting, "We were having a nice family dinner, and you bring an outsider. Are you intentionally causing trouble for me?"
Chu Suosuo looked aggrieved, shrinking behind Gu Aoting timidly, seeking protection.
Gu Aoting's expression darkened, saying, "Mom, Suosuo recently saved Beixian. Don't always treat her like an enemy. You used to love her so much. This child has had it hard too. Back then, her mother forced her to go abroad, separating her forcibly from Beixian, causing her to suffer from severe depression."
Grandma snorted coldly, not saying a word.
Gu Aoting turned to Chu Suosuo, "Suosuo, come and sit down for dinner."
Chu Suosuo obediently said, "Okay, Uncle Gu."
The two of them sat opposite Su Huai and Gu Beixian.
Chu Suosuo picked up a piece of steamed abalone with the public chopsticks, stood up, stretched out her arm, and put it in Gu Beixian's bowl, her manner flirtatious yet somewhat ingratiating, "Brother Beixian, the night I was injured, you took care of me all night long. It was hard work. Eat more abalone to replenish your strength."
Gu Beixian looked at her with a cold expression, "Have you recovered from your injuries?"
Chu Suosuo raised her hand to massage her temple, looking very pained, "My head still hurts faintly, and I can't remember some things clearly."
Gu Beixian gave her a meaningful glance, picked up his phone, and called his assistant, "Bring that worker to the old house."
Chu Suosuo turned pale as soon as she heard this.
