Mephisto needs the World Core.

The academy staff losing their elemental summoning abilities and the intersecting red lines in the library were obviously the work of Feria. This couldn't have been a sudden large-scale attack, but rather a setup prepared earlier.
It was obvious that Feria had confirmed the location of the World Core.
With his foresight ability, Mephisto could have taken advantage and taken the World Core beforehand. This way, there would be no need to compete with Feria.
