For the whole week that followed, there was no sign of activity within the palace. The information gathered only mentioned that Douglas had been in a rather poor mood lately.
This was normal; he detested the feeling of losing control, and with the recent string of accidents, it was only natural for him to be unsettled. Margaret had intended to find some opportunities to gauge Douglas's state, but she found it increasingly difficult to see her fiancé. Perhaps he was becoming suspicious of her, or perhaps he instinctively resisted her approach. Every time she went to the palace, Douglas had ample reasons to keep Margaret at arm's length.
The preparations for the wedding became increasingly busy and burdensome, giving Margaret a headache.
"I no longer wish to meet with any lady, discussing how to please my future husband. I don't care about changing dresses for the wedding, what fabric to use for the shoes, or what each step entails."
