I didn't feel as motivated because I was worried about the consequence of letting Sutow delve into something that could activate his bad wild instincts.
Still, I continued this plan because I knew Sutow would eventually be drawing out the blood of others, with or without me. With this understanding, I therefore figured, 'Why not do things in advance, since it's going to happen anyway?'
Also, having Sutow fight alongside me would be a great factor in the battle against the giant and the zombie. More doesn't mean better. It might end up even worse. That's why I had initially come up with this plan to fight immediately, with Sutow only.
Out of everyone, he was the only one who had the strength, intelligence, and experience of killing, after all.
"You two wait here. I'll go fetch the sword that was left in the center of the town. If, by any chance, the big guy comes in this direction, hide. If I'm not back yet when Brolee is already here, but with the big guy also here, try to grab the big guy's attention so he doesn't kill Brolee." I told the two the possible scenarios that I had in mind and told them what to do if those scenarios were to occur. I had the two completely prepared for the worst, just in case.
With that said I left to run towards the center. Sutow would need a weapon, and since there was one free for use, I couldn't let go of the opportunity to have two people using both a sword against one big guy. This was my plan. A plan that I had come up with because I didn't want to use my precious followers as meat shields.
'Why do that after all, when they could be used in better ways?' I figured.
As I hastily ran my way towards the center, I began doubting this plan of mine even more than before, after hearing Sutow's remark. The reason for this is because running towards the center would take quite a while, ten minutes minimum, I realized, as I needed to go back and forth, more than a kilometer most likely, since the area I left from was around one or two miles close to the border, clearly very distant from the center of the town.
In the end, after thinking enough about it, I stopped my tracks. I couldn't continue with my plan, now that I'm aware of how much time Sutow would be without me. On average, I'd be gone for fifteen minutes, more perhaps. With so much time passing, almost every one of my followers would have teleported into the town already.
They'd be stranded there, alone with that giant. Even with my instructions to Sutow, death will be guaranteed. My proceeding with this plan would be no different from my initial idea to run away out of fear. I'd end up alone, without meat shields or any bit of extra force to help me fight against the giant.
'Brolee has probably arrived already…' I guessed as I turned my body to look in the direction that I had come from. I assumed that it's been around two minutes already since I left that area.
Knowing that I had wasted so much time, I couldn't just let things be like that. Although wasting only two minutes was better than wasting more, I wasn't satisfied because I felt that I needed to at least make the trip useful.
'The poles! Wood!' I was quick to come up with something. 'If the farmers were able to win against kings and soldiers with sticks and stones, then some pointy sticks should be able to do the work! Yes! Spears! Perfect against an opponent who only uses his fists!' I figured.
In a swift motion, I ran to the nearest pole before chopping it from the bottom. The thing fell to the ground, while the torch that was held in place by some torch holder or bracket, rolled away because of the holder breaking upon impact.
"This… Isn't this like eternal fire?" I muttered to myself, realizing and remembering that the torches had never once lost their vigor.
Upon realizing that the fire couldn't die too easily, I came up with yet another idea, which was to use the undying flames as a weapon.
'No, actually, that's going to be difficult.' I realized, disappointed. 'The width of the handle is too small, meaning that it would break upon impact. Even if it wasn't thin, I still can't use it, since it's only useful for close range. Well, I could, and maybe Sutow too… But for the others, for long range, I'd need to find something strong to bind the torch with the pole like a spearhead to a staff.'
Coming to this conclusion, I decided to leave the torch behind with the thought of picking two torches later when I was done turning the poles into wooden spears.
Making my way back towards where the others were waiting for me, I stopped every time I neared a pole so I could chop it off from the ground and turn it into a spear with my sword. The torches that were now left without a holder simply remained on the street, to continue illuminating the area.
Finally, after creating and gathering nine wooden spears, I went and picked two torches before making my way back to where the others were waiting for me.
'Although that sword would have been better than a wooden spear, there are nine of the wooden spears. I guess the plan now is to wait for everyone to arrive…'
