Chapter 17 - Signal

"AMAZING! AMAZING!" Black exclaimed widely. "DID YOU ALL SEE THAT?" He asked frantically as he relished the thrilling show he had just watched.

Rover let out a chuckle in response while Cecile remain quiet.

"His eyes were different" They all heard Cross mutter.

Rover was first to speak "What was that scientist? Got something to say?" He asked.

"The subjects eyes,th-the they changed" Cross replied as he turned to face their monitors.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN? I DIDN'T NOTICE A THING" Rover replied.

"Y-y-you where probably too engrossed to have notice b-b-ut I s-saw it clear-clearly" Cross stuttered and twitched, "His eyes changed" Cross said as he left the White room leaving everyone confused.

.....

The night went by silently, everywhere was calm as still. It snowed heavily after the chaos that ensued.

The remaining soldiers were called back, and a team was called to pick up the pieces of the battle and find 935's body if it still remained.

To Black, Rover and Cecile he was probably long dead. Even the tracker that had been placed behind his neck didn't seem to give off any signal after the explosion, but they still searched for any signs of him left.

The night passed as morning came quietly. The forest laid still as it welcomed the sun's warmth.

A squirrel ran about in search for food. It stopped by a tree and began to dig. A hand suddenly grabbed its head and before it could make a sound its skull was crushed.

The squirrel's body twitched at intervals.

A small charred figure emerged from the snow. His body was completely burnt. He let out wheezing sounds as he tried to breathe.

Some of his fingers were missing due to the explosion.

His tried to eat the dead squirrel but his lips had been burnt shut.

He looked around for anything sharp. He caught sight of a tree branch and quickly crawled to it. He broke off a thin piece and used it to tear a line in his mouth.

It was painful, his hands were shaking and the branch was not sharp but he still forced himself.

He bore through the pain till he felt the line was enough. He put the squirrel into his mouth and crushed it.

He chewed slowly till he finished everything and slowly began to make his way. A wave of relief washed over his body as he could feel his insides healing.

.....

Back at the lab, the soldier left to monitor the tracking device in 935's neck was dozing off when he heard a beeping sound.

He opened his eyes to see a red dot on the screen. The screen had a map of the forest and it began to calculate 935's exact location.

"He's alive?" The soldier muttered and he immediately got up to go fetch his superior.

.....

935 could barely walk, even as he healed, his body felt heavy. He staggered his way through the snow till he came across a road.

His steps were slow as he walked through the tarred road. His ears had been burnt in, to the extent he couldn't hear the car approaching him.

The car didn't seem to have noticed him either as the couple driving were engaged in a heated argument.

The car hit 935 and flung him to a tree, he hit the back of his neck on a fallen tree. A branch that stuck out of the tree pierced through his neck, crushing the chip that was placed at the back of his neck.

.....

At the lab the soldier had dragged his supervisor into the monitoring room. "Sir take a look, it-" the soldier paused the moment he saw the screen.

"This can't be" the soldier said and ran to the monitor, he pressed some buttons but the monitor still displayed the same message it displayed when they walked in

"Sir I swear i-"

The supervisor quickly cut him off "Just get back to work private" the supervisor said and turned around. "This time make sure you don't call me here for a silly glitch got it" the supervisor warned before he left.

.....

The car came to a forced stop on the road and a man walked out, followed by a woman.

"Did you see what you hit?" The woman asked.

"Nope" the man replied as he walked to the front of the car. The bumper had been damaged "It sure was though" the man said as he looked around but didn't see anything.

"If only you had paid attention we wouldn't have to add this mess to our bills you big ol buffoon" the woman snapped.

"Well if you had stopped yapping and arguing with me I would have paid attention more" the man retorted.

Not far off 935 watched them bicker, he could barely keep his eyes open. He open his mouth, trying to speak but nothing came out.

He tried to move his hand and make any form of sound to alert them, but everything seemed to be against him.

He watched as the bickering couple got back in their car after hurling insults at each other.

The woman seemed to be the most angry one out of the two. She got into the car and slammed the door shut.

This only vexed the man more as he yelled at her and examined the bumper once again.

The front had folded in on itself and the engine was even showing. He had a depressed and annoyed look on his face as he got back in the car and drove off with speed.

935 watched the car zoom off and cursed in his heart. He tried to move, maybe he could alert them, or scream so they'd stop but nothing.

He watched the car disappear from his view. He didn't give up though, he kept on trying to move from the branch that made home at the back of his neck.

After multiple attempts he finally fell off the branch. He laid there as his body slowly began to heal.

His body slowly began to heal the burn scars. His eyelids, ears, lips, nose, fingers, everything began to regenerate but slowly.

The bullets that were stuck within him, including the chip where pushed out by his body as he slowly healed himself.

The healing suddenly slowed down greatly as though it stopped and he let out a strained groan.

The wounds from the bullet's and his neck hadn't healed fully yet, blood still flowed from it.

"You need more food and rest" Entity advised.

935 could barely remain conscious, he felt himself slipping away. He wanted to cry, to scream and shout out so his pain would be felt but nothing.

His body gave up on him and he too felt himself giving up. He imagined if this was the end for him.

The cold ate away at his skin, he could feel the chill sipping in from his skin to his bones, yet he lay there in the snow frozen.

Would it have been better to just go back with them to the lab? He thought to himself, it would be better off there than dying in such a pitiful state as this.

Just then as he contemplated and decided to give up and let anything happen he notices a car pull up on the road and a woman walked out of it.

She rushed to him. He sees her lips moving but the fatigue won't let him make out what she was saying. And his eardrums hadn't quite healed yet for him to hear her.

And as though on queue his eyes betrayed him too. Shutting themselves as he fell unconscious, the only thing he felt was the warm embrace of someone lifting him up from the cold snow.
