"LILY, I'm sorry, but we're going to have to let you go."
Lily's heart sank, as the daughter of the café owner and the head manager word's echoed in her ears. She stood behind the counter, her apron still tied around her waist, her eyes wide with shock. The café was unusually quiet, the morning rush having just ended.
"What? Why?" she managed to stammer.
Karen sighed, rubbing her temples. "You've been late almost every day this week, and even when you're here, you're not really present. Your focus is somewhere else, and it's affecting your work. We've talked about this before."
Lily felt a lump form in her throat. "I know I've been distracted, but I promise I can do better! I just have a lot going on right now."
"That wasn't the last time that you promised that. Not to mention, you fucked up a lot just this morning. You spilled again a whole goddamn milk on the carpet, and tried to clean it with a vacuum."
