The calligraphy scroll had the characters for death and life written on it, and it had actually been created by Megumi when she was learning swordsmanship from Genshi two years ago. That had been around the time when she began to lose her emotions, and Genshi saw calligraphy as a way for her to express herself without needing words or emotion.
