Chapter 30 - Turning Tables

The night after the enchanting rooftop proposal, Ryan was practically buzzing with excitement at the thought of orchestrating a meeting between their respective sets of parents. The joy that danced in his eyes was infectious as he sought out Alex, who was nestled in the living room, cocooned in the soft glow of lamplight, savoring a cup of coffee, and immersed in the world of a good book.

As Ryan entered the living room, the warmth of the moment enveloped them. The flickering light accentuated the twinkle in his eyes, and the anticipation of what lay ahead made his heart flutter. He approached Alex, who looked up, greeted by the contagious exuberance radiating from Ryan.

Ryan, a grin on his face, approached Alex.

Ryan: "Hey, love. I've been thinking. How about we have a little dinner with our parents? You know, just to celebrate our engagement and let them get to know each other."

Alex, setting aside his book, looked at Ryan with a mix of surprise and delight.

Alex: "Really? That sounds wonderful. But are you sure your mom is up for it?"

Ryan, with a reassuring smile, nodded.

Ryan: "Absolutely. She's been looking forward to meeting your parents. Let's make it a special evening, okay?"

Alex, feeling a flutter of excitement, agreed, and they began planning the dinner. They decided on a cozy restaurant in Vancouver that offered a perfect setting for a gathering.

On the chosen evening, the restaurant's warm ambiance welcomed the two couples. Alex's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chen, arrived first, exchanging pleasantries with Ryan and Alex. Ryan's mother, Mrs. Eleanor Turner, a graceful woman with an air of sophistication, entered the restaurant with an elegant presence.

The initial conversation was light and filled with laughter as they settled around the table. The aroma of delicious food wafted through the air, creating a comfortable atmosphere.

As the evening progressed, Ryan couldn't help but notice a subtle tension emanating from Mrs. Mitchell. Sensing this, he decided to steer the conversation toward a more personal note.

Ryan: "So, Mom, what do you think of the ring? Alex loved it, right?"

Mrs. Mitchell, offering a polite smile, inspected the ring.

Mrs. Mitchell: "It's a lovely ring, dear. A symbol of commitment."

Ryan, detecting a reserved tone, exchanged a quick glance with Alex. The atmosphere shifted slightly, and the conversation continued with small talk about family, interests, and future plans.

As the main course arrived, Mrs. Mitchell's demeanor became more formal. She turned her attention to Alex's parents, initiating a discussion about their background, careers, and family values. Mr. and Mrs. Chen, gracious and open, shared stories about their life in Vancouver and their support for Alex's aspirations.

The atmosphere shifted subtly as Mrs. Mitchell, with a scrutinizing gaze, directed her questions toward Mr. and Mrs. Chen's immigrant background.

Mrs. Mitchell: "So, Mr. and Mrs. Chen, how did you find life in Vancouver? I can imagine it's quite different from where you came from."

Mr. Chen, maintaining a calm demeanor, responded with a smile.

Mr. Chen: "Yes, it's been an adjustment, but we've embraced the opportunities this city has offered. Vancouver is a diverse and welcoming place."

Mrs. Mitchell, her tone carrying a hint of skepticism, continued probing.

Mrs. Mitchell: "And your business? How did that fare in a new country?"

Mrs. Chen, choosing her words with grace, replied.

Mrs. Chen: "Starting anew in a different country has its challenges, but we've worked hard. We believe in the importance of family values and providing the best for our son."

Mrs. Mitchell, seemingly unsatisfied with the response, pressed further.

Mrs. Mitchell: "But in terms of success, how does your business compare to, say, a well-established company? Surely, that's a significant consideration for Ryan's future."

Alex, feeling the tension rise, exchanged a glance with Ryan, who was growing visibly agitated.

Alex: "Mrs. Mitchell, success is subjective. We may not run a multi-million dollar corporation, but we have a rich family life. That, to us, is invaluable."

Mrs. Mitchell, dismissing the sentiment, turned her attention back to Ryan.

Mrs. Mitchell: "Ryan, you've built a promising career. You should be focused on expanding your business, not distracted by unnecessary commitments."

Ryan, frustration evident in his voice, responded.

Ryan: "Mom, our love is not a distraction. Alex is my partner, and we face everything together, including our futures."

Alex's parents, sensing the discomfort, chose to address Mrs. Mitchell's assumptions about success and cultural differences.

Mr. Chen: "Mrs. Mitchell, we appreciate your concerns. Our background may be different, but we've adapted and worked hard to give Alex the best life. Success, in our eyes, is measured by happiness and unity, not just monetary achievements."

Mrs. Chen added with warmth: "Our family may not fit traditional expectations, but we cherish the values that bring us together."

Mrs. Mitchell, unmoved, continued to express her views.

Mrs. Mitchell: "Ryan, you need to prioritize your career. A stable financial future is essential for a successful life."

Alex's father, Mr. Chen, responded with a gentle but firm tone.

Mr. Chen: "Mrs. Mitchell, I understand the importance of financial stability. I come from a family with a strong business background. But more than anything, I want my son to be happy. Love and happiness should not be sacrificed for financial success alone."

Alex's mother, Mrs. Chen, added: "In our culture, family and social standing were often prioritized for marriage. However, times have changed, and love is now recognized as the key foundation for a lasting marriage."

Mrs. Mitchell, unconvinced, maintained her stance.

Mrs. Mitchell: "You may not understand the challenges of maintaining a fortune over generations. Ryan needs to focus on securing his future."

Mr. Chen, drawing from his own experience, responded respectfully.

Mr. Chen: "Mrs. Mitchell, I come from a family that has maintained a significant business for generations. I understand the challenges. But, ultimately, my priority is Alex's happiness. Wealth is fleeting, but a loving relationship endures."

The tension in the air was palpable, and the conversation reached an impasse. Alex, feeling the weight of the strained atmosphere, crossed his arms defensively, a mixture of sadness and frustration flickering in his eyes.

He cast a fleeting glance at Ryan, who was embroiled in a tense exchange with his mother. The sense of helplessness washed over Alex, his desire to ease the tension stifled by the emotional barrier that had risen between them.

As Mr. Chen, offering a warm smile, added, "Your love is what matters most. "

As Mr. and Mrs. Chen prepared to leave, Mrs. Mitchell, Ryan's mother, couldn't contain her reservations any longer.

Mrs. Mitchell: "Ryan, we need to discuss this further. Marriage at this stage of your life is not a wise decision."

Ryan, frustrated by the unfolding tension, tried to interject.

Ryan: "Mother, this is not the time or the place for this discussion. It's incredibly rude to bring it up in front of everyone."

Mrs. Mitchell, undeterred, continued to voice her concerns.

Mrs. Mitchell: "Ryan, you're still young. I'm not denying your relationship with Alex, but marriage is a serious commitment, especially when it involves different family backgrounds and financial expectations."

Alex, feeling a mix of frustration and sadness, attempted to mediate.

Alex: "Mrs. Mitchell, we respect your opinion, but our decision is based on our love for each other. Marriage is about us, not just our families or financial considerations."

The atmosphere in the restaurant grew tense, and nearby patrons couldn't help but overhear the escalating conversation.

Mrs. Mitchell: "Ryan, I've seen too many young couples rush into marriage and regret it later. I want what's best for you, and right now, that doesn't involve tying the knot."

Ryan, increasingly angered by his mother's persistence, firmly responded.

Ryan: "We're adults capable of making our own decisions. You're being disrespectful, and I won't let you undermine our relationship."

As the argument intensified, Mr. and Mrs. Chen, sensing the discomfort, attempted to ease the situation.

Mr. Chen: "Perhaps it's best we all take a step back. Ryan, Mrs. Mitchell, we appreciate the dinner, but let's not let this discussion ruin the evening."

Mrs. Chen, with a calm demeanor, added: "Every family has its unique dynamics, and we should respect each other's perspectives."

Despite the Chen family's efforts to diffuse the tension, Mrs. Mitchell persisted.

Mrs. Mitchell: "Ryan, you're too focused on the present. Think about your career, your future. Marriage can wait."

Ryan, now openly frustrated, raised his voice.

Ryan: "This is not your decision to make, Mom. Alex and I have discussed our future extensively, and we're on the same page. Your interference is unnecessary and hurtful."

Alex's parents, maintaining their composure, decided to gracefully conclude the evening.

Mrs. Chen: "Thank you for the dinner. We hope you can find common ground as a family. Ryan, Alex, we believe in your love, and we'll support whatever decision you make."

Mr. Chen, with a nod to Ryan, added: "Take care of each other. Love is a journey, and it's yours to navigate."

As the Chen family left the restaurant, the atmosphere hung heavy with unresolved tension. Mrs. Mitchell, seemingly unyielding, continued to express her reservations about the relationship.

Mrs. Mitchell: "Ryan, I only want what's best for you. You're jeopardizing your future with this hasty decision."

Ryan, weary of the argument, firmly stated: "Mom, we need time to process this. It's not up for debate tonight."

Mrs. Mitchell, realizing the conversation had reached an impasse, reluctantly agreed to drop the discussion for the time being.

Mrs. Mitchell: "Fine, we'll talk about this later. But don't let emotions cloud your judgment, Ryan. Your future is at stake."

With that, the mother and son parted ways for the night, leaving behind a strained relationship and a cloud of uncertainty hovering over the once joyous evening.

As they stepped out of the restaurant into the cool Vancouver night, Alex couldn't shake the weight of the intense argument he had witnessed between Ryan and his mother, Mrs. Mitchell. The emotions were overwhelming, and he felt a deep sense of sorrow for the tension that had unfolded.

In the quiet corner by the entrance, Alex saw Ryan, his expression a mixture of frustration and disappointment, engaged in a heated dispute with his mother. The realization that their joyful evening had taken such a painful turn brought tears to Alex's eyes. Mrs. Chen, sensing Alex's distress, enveloped him in a warm and comforting embrace.

Mrs. Chen: "Alex, it's going to be okay. "

Alex, choked with emotion, managed to speak between sobs.

Alex: "I... I just wanted tonight to be perfect. I never expected it to end like this."

Mrs. Chen, gently wiping away Alex's tears, reassured him.

Mrs. Chen: "It's not your fault, my dear. These things happen, and we'll navigate through them together."

Mr. Chen, placing a supportive hand on Alex's shoulder, added: "We're here for both of you. Families have their differences, but love and understanding can mend even the deepest divides."

Amidst the turmoil, Alex felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for his own parents. He took a moment to express his regret for the insults they endured during the dinner.

Alex: "I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. You didn't deserve any of it."

Mrs. Chen, with a tender smile, cupped Alex's face in her hands.

Mrs. Chen: "Alex, we've faced challenges before. This is nothing compared to what we've overcome as a family. Your happiness means everything to us."

Mr. Chen, ever the voice of reason, chimed in: "These are just words, Alex. Actions speak louder. You're a lovely boy, and I'm sure Mrs. Mitchell will see that in time."

Alex, grateful for the comfort his parents provided, couldn't help but feel the depth of their love.

As the Chen family prepared to leave, Mrs. Chen offered a final piece of advice.

Mrs. Chen: "Give it time, Alex. Sometimes, people need time to understand and accept what they don't initially comprehend. Your love for Ryan is genuine, and she will see that eventually."

Alex, still grappling with the emotions of the evening, nodded appreciatively. The support of his parents was a balm for his wounded spirit, and he felt a renewed determination to weather the storm alongside Ryan.

As the Chen family bid their goodbyes, Alex cast a lingering glance back at the restaurant where Ryan and Mrs. Mitchell continued their heated conversation. He knew that the path ahead wouldn't be easy, but with the unwavering love of his parents and the shared commitment he and Ryan held, they would navigate through the challenges that lay ahead.
