Heart racing, the girl inched her way toward the source of the noise. She clutched the knife in one hand, ready to defend herself against whatever or whoever had invaded her home. As she got closer to the door from where the sound was coming, she could hear the faint sound of footsteps, as if someone was shuffling around inside.
Her mind raced with fear and apprehension, wondering who or what could be lurking on the other side of that door. She paused, took a deep breath, and placed her hand on the doorknob, slowly turning it.
The door creaked as it opened, revealing a pitch-black room. Her eyes strained to adjust to the darkness as she stepped cautiously inside. Suddenly, she heard a sound, like a rustling of clothes or a whisper. Her heart thumped in her chest as she gripped the knife tighter, ready to strike.
