Chapter 5 - Blue Horizon

My skin was dry and felt a tightness with a slight movement. Sand under My fingernails soaked up the water droplets along the nape of my neck while scratching. My eyes looked forward at the bright blurry scenery. The dark blue hue above my vision contrasted heavily with the golden burning sand. My feet dug into the coarse sand to wiggle my toes into the cool dry layers. I placed my hands beside myself wide and arched my midsection backwards. My throat let out a sigh reminiscent of a yawn but felt like a hearty groan. "Hey, don't fall onto me." Her voice was soft but with an enthusiastic pitch thrill that betrayed her usual cold attitude. I could hear the hard thunderous gong of the drums that were blended with whiny crackling screeches but had a loud feminine voice distinct from the quiet frequency of her pink headsets. Her obsession with music is shallow but simple with Christina Aguilera and Harry Styles as her usual sound. My head shifted slightly to look behind my shoulders. He sat with one knee by his face while his other leg stretched out. The dark pantsuit reached the black formal shoes. His face was angular with a prominent jawline and hollow cheeks. His eyes were bright with charm and a cheeky smile was fixed on his face. His upper body was shirtless and one can notice his great physique the bold shoulders and visible abs. The image was surrounded by blocks of text and tiny images. "New kid here to make a crash" in bold letters above the page. The open magazine was strewn next to a limp arm with only one page visible. I looked at the image and gazed for moments before a shadow fell onto the magazine. The hairs were long and curly on the golden brown skin of his legs. His hands rested upon his hips staring down at me. His face was oily and pale under the shade of a straw hat. "Water's great, went in son?" deep baritone voice was soft. "I hmm… didn't go but I will later." His face was still before his lips lifted with his teeth displayed. "hehe, you better." He took two short steps past my sister lying on the beach towel. The box with a white lid and a red rectangular plastic box rested by her feet. The lid was lifted open and his burly forearm struck into the cool box rifling. After a few quick jerks followed by sounds of thin metal colliding, and plastic wrap clinking and wringing, his voice boomed. "Where are my cans?" his arm was still with his hand still in the box waiting for a response. Her lipstick was chapped but with slight moisture in the inner area between her lips. Her dark sunglasses rested upon her brow and stared toward the ocean. She sat on the beach chair with her legs crossed with her feet laid on top of her flip-flops. "If I knew, I would tell." Her voice uttered like a low whisper. His body was still rigid and in place, as he called out. "I told you about bringing my cans over." Her chest rose and fell with the release of a loud sigh. The calm indirect response had his head snap around and glare at the mother for a few moments. His head returned and stared into the box before replacing the lid and raising his back. Her head snapped upwards as her elbows staked onto the ground and her chest heaved off the pink towel. "Ice cream! Dad, how about some cash?" she displayed her most pleasant smile and leaned her head to one side. He stared at her daughter's cute performance before relenting with a sigh. "Sure why not, there's not much in that cooler." He turned his back to them and began hiking up to the boardwalk. My sister bounced from the towel and ran pounding with sand kicking into eddies in the air. I watched the pair stroll to the stairs and begin an ascent onto the boardwalk. I slowly turned away and stared at the ocean while readjusting my sitting. "Hmm, aren't you gonna go with 'em? Have something from the cooler than," She uttered as her hand rose and waved her fingers in the direction of the cooler. I slowly untucked my legs and leaned back with my outstretched arm towards the cooler. My knees dug into the towel pulling it back into folds as I crawled an inch closer. My hand landed on the cool plastic surface with a sandy weak print left on the rim of the box. My hand plunged into the cold air and my fingers felt the icy rocks. My palm felt the soft metal as my hand gripped and pulled my arm from the cooler. After replacing the lid, I crawled back to my place and with my free hand pushed the towel to unfold it. I sat with my legs crossed and placed my can in my legs close to my crotch. My index finger went under the tab and snapped open with a loud pop followed by a fizz. My eyes trained on the ocean's horizon against the pale soft blue sky that stretched away from view. My hand on the can slowly lifted towards my face and watched a peculiar sight. The ocean rippled with waves that crashed and sunk back into the mass. Once the water pulled back into the ocean, a fold emerged. It grew into a mountain for a moment before collapsing into a chase towards the beach. The crowds of men and women stood on the wet sands watching the arriving wave while children ran around in joy. The waters finally arrived at their usual stop and sunk back. My lips were wet with carbonated soda and dripped onto my chest. I reached out my hand and wiped off my bare tanned chest. I raised my eyes to look at the ocean. The surface of the blue mass lay still with no waves. There was no such movement, even a ripple on the surface of the waters. The bystanders stood in anticipation, while children froze in their positions as their laughs and joyous shouts dissipated. Only a cool breeze ruffled my dirt gross blonde hair with specks of sand hitting my skin. Voices arose among the people, while some gazed at the ocean. My focus shifted further to the deepest waters that met the sky and watched a miraculous sight. It seemed to be white foam rising from the horizon. I believed it was a wave coming from a great distance for a moment. It rose tall above the surface slowly. It continued to rise rapidly as the wave expanded in length as the subsequent rise of similar waves. The edges of the giant wave towering from a distance stretched into individual thick tendrils rising effortlessly. The wave rose at accelerated speeds towards the sky. The beach was silent without much of a spoken word or a gasp but calm awe at the marvellous sight. My hand rose to my chin titled as orange liquid dosed onto my chest causing a spill that caught onto my shorts. I silently observed in strange mix of terror and curiosity at the rising mountainous wall that erupted of peaks rising into the atmosphere. Suddenly the still water slowly rose from the sandy banks. I watched as The water expanded from the ocean onto the beach advancing towards the beachgoers. Screams raged along with loud stamps kicking away the sand. People ran away towards the boardwalk but the ocean advanced faster than expected. I got onto my feet in sheer terror as the water touched my toes and stared at my feet as it was immediately consumed by the cool salty ocean. Some stood almost in a state of paralysis staring at the wall that climbed into mountainous ranges. My head turned and saw my mother standing as her beach chair toppled into the waters. I panicked as I felt an encroaching wet cold feeling rise along my thighs. The water rose as it advanced away from the beaches onto the elevated platforms. I froze standing, lost as to what to do but immediately rushed to my mother and lay a hand on her shoulder. Her skin was hard and cold like ice so I withdrew my hand instinctively. My affected hand was nursed with slow rubs as I thought about my mother's strange body temperature. I hesitated pounced onto my mother with my two hands on her shoulders and shook her with a shrill shout for any response. Her sunglasses throughout the excessive force and I noticed a shocking sight. Her light brown eyes were pale slivery blue that seemed to gleam. Her face was quiet and calm like nothing. My arms jerked away as my palms felt a burn as if I held onto hard frost. My chest heaved for breath as the ocean continued to rise with my arms began to wade. My arms reached to grip her blouse to yank her above the rising current. Her body felt heavy and solid as my fist tightened onto the material pulled. My head pulled back before my nose could ingest the water settling above my lips. I pulled as hard as I could to retrieve my mother but only my hand rose above the surface with a thorn sunny yellow thread between my fingers. The water continued to rise with my arms flaying and my neck extended as out as possible. My fist loosened as I felt the thorn piece fall between my fingers. I tried to grab out but felt nothing so without thought plunged my head under the surface. I braced myself as my eyes opened to feel the stinging salt make contact. The blonde strands of hair flowed statically in my frame as my forearms swept them away. The memorabilia was nowhere to be seen but I felt my heart hardened in fear. I saw beachgoers running, standing and faces filled with fear and anxiety. They were paralyzed; captured in their last moments at that very incident. I stared at such a horrific sight and thought how they seemed like statues. I began to ascent but my chest began to burn. It was painful but My arms reached towards the sky and pulled back as my body propelled upwards. Like a virus, it spread from my chest onto my torso, my pelvis and my neck. The burning sensation was painful but was doing something irrevocable to my body that I could not comprehend. I needed to sprint faster onto the surface but can felt the ocean rising faster. My arms began to burn and my legs; like pricks of sharp needles jabbed my limbs. My arms began to spasm and drop dead then my legs halted any movement after a strange shock in my highs. My organs burned and felt a churning movement occurring in my stomach region. I lay right in the ocean and felt my breath run out. Skin felt very cold as frost and hardening like steel. For those last moments, my eyes saw shards of light cut through the dark ocean blinding everything and followed with a blue glow. My mind relaxed as my body sunk back to the beach.
