I could hear the sirens, shouts and the pounding of footsteps on the pavement behind me. They were searching for the one that had damaged that vehicle…
They were searching for me.
Peter had told me the stories of the battles that broke out during the vampire wars. The death and destruction had almost wiped out the entire human race, and now they had someone living among them that carried vampire blood in her veins. I knew that they would not hesitate if they found out what I was.
I leaned against the wall at the edge of the alley to gather what strength I had before stepping out into the crowd of people that were going about their business. The building was made of brick and felt cool against my skin. I pressed my forehead against the wall and hoped that it would help dull the pain that was still threatening to split my head apart if I moved too quickly.
A voice that came echoing from down the alley brought me back to my senses. I opened my eyes and gazed down the dark alley that I had just come from and cursed quietly to myself when I saw the little trail of blood I had left behind me in my attempt to escape. There was no time to think about how I must look or if I could make it or not, I had to get away from this area and fast.
I glanced out of the ally to the busy street then back behind me. My only choice was to cross over to the other ally as fast as I could without hurting myself or anyone else around me. I waited a brief moment for a gap in the traffic then hurled myself out into the street and ran for cover towards the next alleyway.
I had almost made it to the other sidewalk when a careless driver hit me head on. The force lifted me up onto the windshield of the car, which shattered from the impact before I rolled over and hit the ground.
The world was fuzzy and all I could hear was fluid rushing in my ears before the darkness rose up to meet me once more.
My head was pounding as I slowly opened my eyes. My surroundings were dim and I had to focus to make sense of what I was seeing. After blinking a couple of times I realised I was looking at the back of a seat and there was a quiet murmuring coming from the other side of it.
The vehicle hit a small bump in the road and I groaned from the sudden movement.
"Oh you're awake." I heard the female voice from the driver seat of the car.
"Who are you?" I managed to croak as I tried to move and failed.
"I'm a friend of Cate's." My heart skipped a beat as I remembered the reason why I was in this shape to begin with. "Don't worry she's fine." The female voice continued as if she knew what I was thinking.
"Where are we going?" Not that it mattered. She could have been driving me to my doom and I wouldn't be able to do anything about it in my current condition.
"Someplace safe. Cate will meet us there when she is able to."
I was glad that Cate was ok and that if this person was telling me the truth I would be safe and get to see her again. With that small comfort in my head I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep again.
