Chapter 1 - the beginning

3/5/23

The world has collapsed. Society as we know it, forever changed and left behind. Few people are left living in this world. The rest have succumbed to the sickness C-30. A stronger mutated version of C-19 from the year 2019. The bigger difference about this new virus is that it affects the Nervous System instead of the long lasting changes to the Immune system and the genes that will be passed on in future generations(at least I think that's how it works).

You're probably wondering how this happened right? Well some time during January in the year 2023, quite a few people started to take these weight loss drugs that burn up fat and make you not want to eat. My dad was one of them, it was great. At first everybody wanting to lose weight was losing weight, getting healthier, going to the gym, eating better.

Then people started to get sick again.

This part is not so great, at this point we're about halfway through January.

The virus came back and mixed in with the weight loss drugs that people were taking. This is how the virus mutated, when it did that the victims brain shriveled up and turned the host into thirsty, hungry, monsters. That will stop at nothing to end their hunger. So I've decided that they are the closest to Zombies we will ever get. Because they act exactly like Zombies.

Anyways that's enough of that I suppose you would want to know who is narrating this story, won't you? Well my name is Estelle Valdez Jackson. Don't say anything, my mom was a Percy Jackson fan. Anyways now that we have that out of the way.

I'm currently residing in the upstairs of my house, because one thing I have learned about Zombies is that they can't climb for shit. I've also learned that the Power in my house hasn't gone out yet, so I've been taking all the pots and pans buckets and everything from downstairs to fill them up with water.

Oh and I also somehow managed to get the treadmill up from the basement with the help of my brother Percy by finding some rope and pulling it up the stairs.

Also since I haven't mentioned much abt our mom and I've only mentioned our dad once, I'm just gonna tell you guys that they turned into Zombies at the very start of this whole thing so it's just been me and Percy for a while. It's no big deal though to be honest, we've been doing pretty good by ourselves to have survived for two months without any help.

Hang on, my brother is calling me.

"Estelle stop writing in that note book of yours we have to charge up our stuff and restock the food." Percy glares at me while putting on his shoes.

"Percy just let me write one last thing pleaseeee". I beg while turning around in my swivel chair and facing my brother who is sitting on the bed behind me and tying up his black combat boots.

"No, you can finish it later, we have to go now or else we might not come home until dark and we won't be able to see without using the flashlights on our phones." oh we also have a solar panel charger thing. We can use it to charge phones and stuff

"Fine, I guess we can go." I mumble while grabbing my own pair of combat boots and climbing out of the window next to me and landing onto the roof where we charge our stuff. Picking up both of our phones. Slipping my black cased phone into my pocket I looked out at the front yard and listened for the sounds of the undead.

"Percy, do you think things have gotten quieter?" I asked in a soft voice while still observing the empty street of our neighborhood and slightly getting unnerved at the lack of cars driving back and forth down the road.

"Estelle, it's a given that things have gotten quieter. Now come one lets go." Percy ordered while picking up a gray worn out backpack and putting it on.

"Okay, I'm coming." I whined before reluctantly turning away from the street and going back through the window and into the house.

Closing the window behind me I pick up Percy's phone and toss it to him, giving me a glare in response. I walk past him and pick up my own black school backpack, and slip it over my shoulders.

Following my brother out the bedroom door and down the dusty steps of our house being as quiet as possible as to not attract the undead. I walked with steps so light that you could hear the bugs buzzing outside.

Walking out the back-door and taking into observation at the clouds slowly starting to condense and gray, I looked over to Percy and watched him squint up at the sky with annoyance. "It's gonna rain."Percy groaned, "We'll have to make this one really quick…" he rolled his eyes at the huge inconvenience of condensation.

"Mhm" I hummed while adjusting the straps of my backpack to be more comfortable and walked over to my brother.

"Do you have everything?" he asked without looking at me and still scrutinizing the sky. I looked down at myself and patted my sweat-pant pockets, feeling my pocket knife in my back pocket and throwing daggers stuffed in a sewn on pocket. I looked back up at my brother and nodded my head. "Good, I'd hate for a repeat of last time.." He mutters while looking away from the sky and starts staring at the trees in our backyard that separate the road from us.

"Ready then?" I asked while knocking into his shoulder to get his attention.

"Ready as i'll ever be" he trailed off and started walking our usual route, towards the road.Â
