Chapter 71 - Permission and Tonks

Harry knocked on the door of Dumbledore's office.

"Enter," came Dumbledore's voice.

Harry opened the door and entered. Dumbledore as usual was seated behind his desk. He seemed to be reading a book from what Harry could tell. He looked up and smiled warmly. "Ah, Harry. What can I do for you today?"

Harry decided that he still needed to think about the situation so he started with Ron's idea. "Professor, we had a lot of revision classes today. Transfiguration, DADA, Charms. We revised everything we have covered so far."

Dumbledore nodded his eyes twinkling, "That's good to hear, but I highly doubt you came to talk about that?"

Harry nodded, "I saw that many students were still struggling to perform the spells we have covered so far." He sighed. "While it's not really surprising since most of students are not exactly interested in pursuing magic deeply."

Dumbledore waited for him to continue. "So after our DADA class, Ron suddenly had an idea about making a tutor club of sorts. Helping the students who are interested in learning to get better."

Dumbledore's usual twinkling eyes seem to twinkle even more. "A most admirable idea, Harry. It is always heartening to see students taking initiative to help each other. And what do you think about this idea?"

Harry smiled, "I think it's a great idea sir. I was surprised that I hadn't thought of it before"

Dumbledore nodded, "And I believe you would be teaching the others?"

Harry grimaced. He would love to help the others but as compared to the others, he didn't need all the elaborate hand movements to do magic so he doubted he could teach. "About that....I don't believe I can teach Professor."

Dumbledore leaned back in his chair, "And why not Harry?"

Harry sighed as he really didn't want to have conversation like this with Dumbledore but there was no other way around. "Well sir, my condition is a bit unique. I don't think I will be able to tutor them because unlike them I don't need the elaborate hand movements to do magic. As long as I know what I need to get done, I can just do it regardless of whether I have a wand or not and that has been this way since I started magic"

Dumbledore regarded Harry thoughtfully, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. "That is indeed a unique situation, Harry. But sometimes, those who face different challenges can offer perspectives that others might not consider. Your approach to magic, while different, could still provide valuable insights to your peers."

Harry frowned. "But, Professor, how can I teach them something that doesn't work the same way for me? I don't want to make things more confusing for them."

Dumbledore smiled gently. "Teaching is not merely about demonstrating one's own methods, but understanding and guiding others in finding what works best for them. You have a deep understanding of magic, Harry, and that understanding can still be shared, even if your execution differs."

Harry thought out loud. "I suppose I could try. Maybe I can help with the theory and understanding behind the spells, even if the practical part is different."

Dumbledore nodded, "That sounds like an excellent approach. And remember, you don't have to do this alone. You have friends who can assist with the practical demonstrations. Together, you can create a comprehensive learning experience for your fellow students."

Harry nodded then prepared to ask what he had originally came for. "Sir there is another matter I need to discuss."

Dumbledore looked at him, "Feel free to share anything you'd like Harry"

Harry took a deep breath, feeling the weight of his request. "Sir, I'd like to request permission not to attend classes."

Dumbledore's eyebrows rose slightly. "And why is that, Harry?"

Harry continued. "I've already completed all the course material up to seventh year. I find myself incredibly bored in classes, covering the same topics over and over again."

Dumbledore looked shocked. "That is quite an unusual situation, Harry. I knew that you were ahead of your peers, but this... is rather exceptional."

Harry hesitated, should he tell the whole truth? Then he decided that he should. "It's more than that, Professor. I've completed magic up to the master's level. I could sit for my master's exams in any subject and I'm confident I would score full marks in all of them."

Dumbledore's eyes widened in surprise. It was the first time Harry had seen that man shocked to this extent. "That is... quite extraordinary, Harry. I was aware of your advanced abilities, but I had no idea you had progressed to such an extent."

Harry smiled sheepishly. "I didn't want to make a fuss about it, but sitting through the same lessons every day is becoming unbearable."

Dumbledore leaned back in his chair, clearly deep in thought. "This does indeed present a unique challenge. You say you are confident in your mastery of advanced magic. Would you be willing to demonstrate your abilities with a few particularly complex spells?"

Harry nodded. "Of course, Professor. Which spells would you like me to perform?"

Dumbledore's eyes twinkled with curiosity. "Surprise me!"

Harry smirked as he saw a pitcher of water on the desk. He pointed his hand towards the pitcher and muttered, "Aqua Dominus." Instantly, the water responded, rising gracefully from the pitcher and twisting into intricate shapes. Harry effortlessly crafted delicate water sculptures, swirling tendrils, and even a miniature phoenix that soared around the room before settling back into a serene orb. The water seemed to dance under his command, reflecting the soft light in mesmerizing patterns. Dumbledore watched with incredible delight and surprise, his eyes twinkling with fascination. As Harry concluded the demonstration, Dumbledore clapped appreciatively.

"Is this the limit of the spell?" Dumbledore asked, still in awe.

Harry smiled. "For me, this spell doesn't have such limitations. If I wanted, I could control all the water in a large lake with this spell. I could go for bigger water bodies too, but I haven't tried, and I don't think it would be wise to."

Dumbledore nodded, agreeing with Harry's cautious approach. "A remarkable demonstration, Harry. Your abilities continue to amaze me."

Harry smiled, "Would you like to see anything else sir?"

Dumbledore's eyes started twinkling more, "Go ahead, Harry. Surprise me"

Harry thought about what spell he should demonstrate next. Then he remembered that he read that Dumbledore had used the Nebulus spell to conceal his meeting with Newt Scamander. There was a much advanced version of this spell in one of the books he had found in the Room of Requirement library. He smiled, "How about a spell you would be familiar with?"

Dumbledore smiled his eyes twinkling madly, "And that spell would be?"

Harry got up and walked to the window near Dumbledore's desk. He pointed his wand outside and muttered, "Nebulus Erraticus". Thick fog emitted from the wand tip and slowly encased the entire Hogwarts ground. Dumbledore who was seated till now stood up and came to the window to see.

Dumbledore's eyes shot up as he saw the fog outside. He felt a mixture of nostalgia and surprise at seeing the fog. As he observed the fog, he saw that it was slightly different as compared to the original Nebulus fog.

"Remarkable, Harry," Dumbledore murmured, his voice filled with awe. "This is no ordinary Nebulus. The magic is... different, more complex. What exactly have you done?"

Harry smiled. "This version of Nebulus, Professor, creates a fog that disorients anyone who tries to walk through it. They find themselves walking in circles, unable to find their way out, much like being lost in a dense forest. It's a defensive spell, meant to protect areas by confusing intruders."

Dumbledore nodded slowly, his eyes still fixed on the swirling fog outside. "Ingenious. It combines the elements of concealment and misdirection flawlessly. Such a spell could be incredibly useful in protecting sensitive areas."

Harry added, "It also has an additional layer of defense. If someone attempts to use magic to dispel the fog, it reacts by thickening and becoming even more impenetrable. Only the caster can lift the fog or allow others to pass through it."

Dumbledore turned to Harry, his eyes twinkling madly. "You continue to surpass all expectations, Harry. With this I hardly feel like Hogwarts has anything it can teach you."

Harry smiled, "Even then I would just like to get permission to skip the classes sir. I don't want to skip years or graduate as that would put a huge chasm between me and my friends here."

Dumbledore nodded, "Yes that it would. Very well Harry. I grant you permission to not attend classes whenever you don't want to."

As both Dumbledore and Harry sat down at the desk again, Harry remembered that Voldemort was there with Quirrell and he rather not give him any inkling of his powers. Even if he wanted to skip classes badly he couldn't right now. Not until he had killed Quirrell anyway and destroyed Voldy's plan.

But what could he do? Was there anything he could do to get the permission not to go to the lessons without drawing too much attention? Just then his mind clicked, there were probably thousands of potions which he had recipes to, so he could definitely use one of them as a personal project to be excused for right?

"Sir, for now could you just tell the professors that I am working on a personal project. I don't want them to know about it yet", Harry asked hoping Dumbledore wouldn't ask too many questions.

"Very well, Harry.", Dumbledore smiled. Harry was surprised that he didn't ask too many questions.

"Just like that? You don't want to know why?", Harry asked stunned.

"I believe you have your reasons", Dumbledore smiled. Harry just nodded as he was too stunned to speak anything.

"Very well then. Now move along it will be dinner shortly," Dumbledore said. "I'll talk about the tutoring club idea with the rest of the Professors and I think you can expect an answer by the end of this week"

Harry stood up, "Thank you, Professor."

As he made his way to the door, Dumbledore said, "One more thing, Harry. Remember that you are not alone in your journey. Do not hesitate to seek guidance or support when needed."

Harry nodded and went out of the office and made his way towards the Gryffindor Tower. He was deep in thought about his newfound freedom and what he should do about it. More importantly what should he do about Voldemort and Quirrell. Should he include Ron and Hermione? How would he go about including Ron and Hermione, now that they were never involved from the start?

A quick plan formulated in his mind as he walked towards the Gryffindor tower. Thinking more about his plan he smirked as it would definitely work. Satisfied with his thinking he hurried towards the Gryffindor common room.

After about 5 minutes of walking he reached the portrait of Fat Lady. He reached the portrait and gave the password, "Nitwit". The portrait swung out and he entered the common room. The common room seemed to be filled with students from all years. Fred and George were sitting in a corner with their friend Lee discussing what surprisingly seemed like quills; talk about being spontaneous. Alicia was sitting near the window with Katie and they seemed to be speaking and giggling about something. Neville was seated near the fireplace with a herbology book. Percy seemed to be sitting near the back with a large stack of books and he seemed to be writing something.

Harry scanned the room for Ron and Hermione but he didn't find them. Not wanting to stay in the common room any longer, Harry made his way to his dormitory quietly. As he entered the dormitory he saw that Ron was lying on his bed and was reading the book Harry had given him for Christmas.

"Hey Ron," Harry called out as he made his way to his bed.

Ron looked up from his book, "Oh, hey mate! How'd the talk with Dumbledore go?"

Harry smiled as he started to rummage through his trunk to find a new pair of clothes to change into. "It went really well. I'm free from attending classes for the rest of the term."

Ron gawked, "Just like that? How'd you manage to convince him?"

Harry shrugged, "Just showed him some advanced spells to showcase my magic skills. He was pretty understanding about it"

Ron whistled, "Blimey! Lucky you. Dumbledore must really like you or something"

Harry chuckled, "Yeah maybe. Anyway, listen. I have talk to you and Hermione about something I saw while coming back to the common room. It's quite important."

Ron nodded, "Okay, let's go down to the common room then, and we'll wait for Hermione there."

Harry shook his head, "Not today Ron! Tomorrow after classes, I am going home tonight."

Ron looked intrigued, "Home? Why?"

Harry chuckled, "I promised Abby that I'll go back regularly now and then. Also I want to give the news that I don't have to sit for classes anymore"

Ron nodded, "Ah okay. I'll tell Hermione"

Harry nodded as he found the pair of clothes he was looking for. As he took them out, he asked, "You wanna visit your place? I'll pop you back if you want"

Ron thought about it and then replied, "Nah, not this time. Probably next weekend."

Harry nodded, "Okay." He headed towards the bathroom for a quick shower.

After a few minutes, Harry emerged from the bathroom, feeling refreshed and changed into his casual clothes.

Ron glanced at him as he was about to leave, "Say hi to Abby for me."

Harry smiled, "Will do. Want me to grab something from Honeydukes on my way back?"

Ron nodded excitedly, "Whatever you can."

Harry chuckled, "Got it. Don't tell the others except Hermione. Tell them I'm sleeping as I was too tired." He quickly pulled his bed curtains around his bed and arranged the pillows to make it look like he was asleep.

Ron replied, "Got it."

Harry smirked, "Okay, bye. See you tomorrow." With that he Disapparated without a sound, leaving Ron to his book.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moments later he appeared in the living room of the Dursley Mansion. He took a deep breathe of the familiar scent and comfort.

"Mum! Dad! Abby! I'm home." He shouted at top of his lungs. No one appeared, but after a second several pops were heard as Flick, Jinx and Wobble appeared.

They bowed low. "Master Harry! Welcome home!"

Harry smiled, "Hi Flick, Jinx, Wobble. How have you been?"

They replied excitedly, "We is good, Master Harry. We have lots of work to do and we is happy!"

Harry chuckled, "I am glad you are enjoying it here. If you need anything don't hesitate to say okay?"

They bowed again, "Master Harry is a great wizard, he is"

Harry smiled, "Say, where is everyone?"

Jinx replied, "Master Vernon, and Miss Abigail is visiting Mistress Andromeda Tonks with Master Sirius."

Harry thought for a moment then remembered that Andromeda Tonks was Nymphadora Tonk's mother. "Ah, I see."

"Can anyone of you take me there?"

Wobble stepped forward, bowing again. "Wobble can take Master Harry! Please take Wobble's hand, Master."

Harry smiled as he took Wobble's hand, "But first let's go to Honeydukes okay?"

Wobble nodded his head, "Wobble is understanding, Master Harry."

With a quick pop, Harry and Wobble Apparated to just outside of Honeydukes. The sweet shop was bustling with people. Harry made his way inside and quickly got some of Abigail's favourite sweets. He also picked up Petunia's favourite fudge and some other treats for the house elves, which he handed to Wobble and said, "Share these with all the house elves, okay?"

Wobble's eyes widened, "Master Harry is too kind. Wobble will share, Master."

Harry smiled and continued browsing, picking out a selection of sweets to bring as a visiting gift for the Tonks family. Once he had gotten it packed, he turned to Wobble, "Alright, let's go."

With another pop, they Disapparated and appeared in front of a small quaint house. It had a well maintained garden and was full of flowers, although most of them were not blooming considering that it was now dark.

Harry quickly put the sweets for Abigail and Petunia in his pouch before thanking Wobble, who disappeared with a bow. He then knocked on the door.

Moments later, the door was opened by a young woman with pink hair that was styled in short spiky fashion. She wore a pair of ripped jeans and a band t-shirt. There was a leather jacket on top of it and she looked as if she was a part of an old biker gang.

This was definitely Nymphadora, Harry thought. Although calling her that would probably earn him a curse to the face.

"Hello, who are you little kid?", Tonks asked with a smile.

Harry smiled politely, "Hello, I'm Harry. I heard that my family is visiting when I came home"

Tonks raised an eyebrow. "Harry....Harry...Oh you mean Harry Potter?"

Harry chuckled, "The one and the same. Is this the Tonks residence?"

Tonks eyes scanned him from head to toe, "Yes, it is. I'm Tonks, come on in."

As Harry stepped inside, he couldn't resist teasing her. "You know, I've always heard pink is the toughest color. Nice to see it's true."

Tonks laughed, clearly amused. "Oh, you cheeky little thing. And here I thought I had the monopoly on witty comebacks."

Harry smirked, letting his gaze linger on her. "Well, I couldn't let you have all the fun, could I? Besides, I've always had a thing for pink."

Tonks gave him an appraising look, her smile widening. "I think I'm going to like you, Harry."

Harry smirked, "Oh the feeling is mutual, my lady."

Tonks smirked and led Harry towards the living room. As they walked towards it, Tonks caught her leg on the step and tripped. Harry quickly caught her, "Oh dear, be careful. I can't have you falling for me that quick, can I?" He said with a smirk as he straightened her.

Tonks laughed, her cheeks tinged with a hint of pink. "Cheeky, aren't you?"

Harry smirked, "Just a bit. Wouldn't want to make things too easy for you, now would I?"

Tonks shook her head, clearly amused. "You're a piece of work, Harry Potter."

Harry smirked and countered with a wink, "Don't worry, I'll soon be your favourite piece of work."

Tonks laughed again, her eyes sparkling. "We'll see about that."

Harry smiled, "That we will." He followed Tonks through the corridor and continued into the living room. The living room was full: Edward 'Ted' Tonks, Vernon, Sirius, Petunia, Abigail and Andromeda were all seated engaged in a serious conversation from what Harry could tell from the atmosphere.

Abigail spotted Harry and squealed. "Harry!" She jumped from her chair launching herself at him. Harry caught her in a hug, laughing.

"Hey, Abby," he said, ruffling her hair. "Missed me?"

"Always!" she replied with a smile.

Tonks couldn't help tease Harry, "Used to girls throwing themselves at you?"

Harry smirked and replied with a wink, "Not really. But don't be shy if you want to."

This effectively shut her up as she blushed deeply. Andromeda chuckled watching a eleven-year-old boy leaving her unruly daughter blushing. Ted and Vernon exchanged amused glances, while Sirius eyes twinkled with pride.

"My, my Petunia. You son certainly has his way with words", Andromeda chuckled.

Petunia smiled, "That he does, although I have no idea from where he gets it."

Ted gave a hearty laugh and said, "When he has a godfather like Sirius, you should hardly be surprised Petunia."

Vernon chuckled, "Don't forget he is James's son. The one and only."

Ted laughed even more, "That figures it out pretty much."

Harry grinned as he set down Abigail and handed the sweets to Andromeda. "Well I was home and didn't find you guys. Wobble said that you had come here so I just dropped by."

Petunia, "It's been two days since you went to Hogwarts, Harry. Don't tell me you are already bored."

Harry smiled sheepishly, "I am. It's quite boring when the only thing you looking forward to is Quidditch."

The evening passed by quickly as they all had a fun time, with Andromeda telling Nymphadora's childhood antics much to the embarrassment of her. Ted filling in the details wherever he could. Sirius sharing a funny story now and then causing everyone to laugh. After a while, it was time to leave. The Dursleys took their leave inviting the Tonks family on a lunch that weekend. They quickly Floo'ed back to their mansion. Sirius had stayed back saying that he was having dinner with them today as he didn't feel like cooking himself and would like to catch up with them.

Back in the Dursley Mansion, Harry emerged from the fire first, followed by Abigail. Petunia and Vernon came next.

"So Harry you are staying for dinner right?", Petunia asked as she dusted off the soot from his hair. Harry nodded, "Yup, I'm staying today. I'll go back tomorrow."

Vernon asked, "Wouldn't you be absent from your classes? The Professor's would allow you?"

Harry smirked, "It's fine Dad. I talked with Dumbledore and got permission to skip the classes for the rest of the term."

Petunia chuckled, "How did you do that?"

Harry ruffled Abigail's hair, "I just showed Dumbledore some advanced magic and told him that I have already completed the courses till 7th year. Although I told him to say that I am working on a personal project for the rest of the term to the professors." He took out the sweet boxes from his pouch and handed one to Abigail and the fudge to Petunia. "I'll appear for a small test next year and get excused from all the classes up till seventh year."

Petunia took the fudge box and smiled, "Well, I guess it's too boring for you to sit through classes when you already know everything."

Harry groaned, "You wouldn't believe it Mum. It's like having to learn the alphabets all over again."

This caused both Vernon and Petunia to chuckle as they knew Harry was not exaggerating. Abigail who was listening closely, "So you can come by whenever I call?"

Harry smiled, "Of course not whenever Abby but I can come back more easily." Abigail smiled brightly at that. Harry chuckled to see her excitement at that small piece of information.

Petunia looked concerned. "Are you sure this is a good idea, Harry? You don't want to draw too much attention to yourself."

Harry nodded. "I know, Mum. That's why I'm keeping it quiet for now. Dumbledore is on board, and I have a plan to keep things under the radar."

"What kind of personal project are you talking about, Harry?", Vernon asked eager to know. Harry smiled, "Just some potions Dad. Nothing new, I came across a lot of very advanced potion recipes and I want to work out one of them."

Vernon nodded, "What kind of potions? I can help you get some ingredients if you need."

Harry smiled, "Of course, I'll need your help Dad. For now I'm thinking of the Eye-Sight correcting potion. So I'll write you the list of ingredients that you can get me."

Vernon nodded, "Okay Harry. I'll get you the ingredients as fast as possible."

They sat down together and talked about various things as the elves prepared the dinner. Harry told them about the Moonsbane Elixir he created with the help of Snape and how it was an advanced version of the Wolfsbane Potion. He also told how the Moonsbane Elixir should help the werewolf to retain it's human emotions fully and also help it protect itself a bit from silver.

Vernon and Petunia were very shocked to hear that such a potion existed and wanted to know where he found it. He replied that he found it in the library at Hogwarts, which wasn't a lie but wasn't the complete truth either. As they talked, Harry let them know about his eating session at Hogwarts they day before where he gained the nick name 'The Boy who ate' which caused them to laugh.

Soon the elves came to inform that dinner was ready and the family went to the dinning hall where the elves had already set the table. The dinner passed merrily with jokes and stories accompanying them as they ate. After dinner, Vernon excused himself to his room saying he had some work he needed to finish and Harry sat with Petunia and Abigail in the living room reading together. He helped Abigail read the book he had given her for Christmas, the one on the basics of magic. Petunia who listened in on the lecture found many things which changed her view on magic once more.

As the night wore on, Abigail grew sleepy, and Harry gently helped Petunia put her to bed. Harry then retreated to his own room, sinking into his bed with a contented sigh. His mind, however, was far from resting. He meticulously reviewed his plan for the end of the year, contemplating how to subtly plant the necessary suspicions about Quirrell in Ron and Hermione's minds. The goal was to ensure their involvement in the impending confrontation over the Sorcerer's Stone. Soon he too fell asleep thinking about all the ways his plan could go.
