Chapter 3 - The First Day, Is The First Step

As the dawn of the following day bathed the room in soft hues, Shizu awoke determined to make a punctual debut on his inaugural day of work. He propelled himself out of bed in haste, a sense of eagerness propelling him forward. With swift movements, he navigated the unfamiliar terrain of the hallway, his footsteps echoing with the urgency of a fresh start.

Yet, amid this morning's hunger, an unexpected encounter disrupted the rhythm of his anticipation. Turning a corner, he collided with a woman whose cascading locks bore an uncanny resemblance to Yami-san. However, her eyes, a striking cadmium green, set her apart as someone distinct yet familiar.

The woman kicked him in the nuts without hesitation; he grunted and fell to his knees, holding his groin; his face turned blue, his countenance contorted with a mixture of agony and nausea.

"Father, brace yourself for this tragic revelation: I've officially declared a cease-and-desist order on the whole 'having kids' operation. Apologies in advance, but your grand visions of a flourishing family bloodline might have hit a comedic roadblock. Cue the dramatic music as we bid farewell to the epic saga of our lineage!"

Shizu said to himself; his agony was palpable in the timbre of his tone,

"Who the heck are you?! Yami-chan!! Someone Broke in!"

Engrossed in her activities downstairs, Yami abruptly halted everything upon hearing the unexpected commotion echoing from the floor above. An intuitive sense of urgency propelled her, and she swiftly ascended the stairs to unravel the source of the disturbance. A tableau of discomfort unfolded before her as she reached the upper landing.

There, Shizu-san knelt on the floor, his posture conveying both surprise and pain, cradling his private area with one hand. Groans of discomfort filled the air, intertwining with the tense atmosphere. Yami's eyes absorbed the scene, her expression a dynamic interplay of concern and curiosity.

An anxious smile flickered across Yami's face, betraying her unease at the sight before her. At that moment, a swirl of emotions danced in her eyes — a blend of confusion, sympathy, and readiness to unravel the enigma of the unexpected incident that had disrupted the tranquillity of the hallway.

"Sorry... I completely forgot to tell you..."

As the commotion subsided, Yami ushered them into a moment of respite, seating them with beverages. A cup of steaming coffee for Shizu and a comforting mug of hot chocolate for the woman offered a soothing interlude. In the calm, the woman, marked by confusion, sought answers, trying to unravel the enigma of Shizu's presence in her world.

"Auntie Es, this is Kazashi Shizu-san. Shizu-san, this is my Aunt, Kento Estelene. Auntie Es Shizu is a new employee staying with us briefly. And Shizu-san, my aunt, is the graphics designer."

Es met Shizu's gaze, a glint of sincerity in her eyes. She extended her hand, a silent plea for reconciliation, seeking to mend any fractures that might have formed between them.

"I'm sorry for kicking you in the nuts, though it's not my fault Yami-chan didn't tell me."

Este's blunt statement hung in the air, casting a momentary tension. An uneasy grin hesitated on Shizu's lips. Still, he quickly extended her hand, engaging in a firm handshake with Este, a gesture betraying both a desire for reconciliation and a subtle acknowledgement of the underlying tension.

"I'm sorry, Ma'am, I didn't mean to scare you..."

As his words trailed off, Yami remained seated, a bright and genuine smile illuminating her face, a reflection of her contentment over the reconciliation between the two. Sensing the need for a private conversation, Este gestured for Yami to join her for a moment alone. In response, Yami nodded and gracefully rose from the table. The two figures navigated through the bustling cafe, finding a quieter spot towards the end. Yami's reassuring smile persisted throughout their departure as a silent promise that the exchange would be one of understanding and resolution.

"What is he doing here, Yami? Just because he's handsome, you can't just allow him to live with us."

Este's words hung in the air, and she crossed her arms in a stance of anticipation. Meanwhile, in response, Yami wore a subtle pout, her gaze fixed on Este with a mixture of playfulness and curiosity as if challenging her to a verbal dance of reactions.

"I didn't bring him here because he's uh... Handsome, he was in a difficult situation... And he's a lot like me; he doesn't have anywhere to go, so I wanted to help..."

Yami, with a lingering pout, couldn't fathom Este's assumption that she had brought Shizu here solely for his looks. An incredulous expression painted her features, revealing a blend of amusement and disbelief at the misunderstanding.

"Like, what do you take me for..."

Este let out a soft sigh, her arms uncrossing in a gesture of reassurance. With a gentle touch, she reached out to pat Yami's head, a silent and comforting connection that spoke volumes in its simplicity.

"Yes, how dare I assume you brought him here because he's good-looking? What will I ever do with myself."

Este's words dripped with sarcasm, a subtle smirk on her lips. Catching the jest, Yami responded with a playful roll of her eyes before strolling back to where Shizu was seated. Este followed suit with a lingering amusement and joined them at the table. Shizu, curious about the surroundings, scanned the diverse group of customers. The cafe's ambience embraced people of all ages, each engrossed in their enjoyment, creating a vibrant tapestry of laughter and shared moments in this welcoming environment.

"Now, you will start your shift soon; my friend Meredith will show you around. For now, though, you can clean the empty table."

Yami expressed her words with a gentle smile, a warmth that lingered as she gracefully rose from her seat, driven to assist the customers. Este, observing Yami's departure, decided to stay and offer her help to him. The bustling atmosphere of the cafe continued around them as they navigated through tasks. Meanwhile, amidst the ambient noise, the distant murmur of a radio news broadcast caught his attention, adding a layer of sensory experience to the moment.

"Good morning, Tokyo! You're tuned in to Tokyo FM, where we take pride in delivering the latest updates. Today, we spotlight Hiroto Fuji, renowned as the 'masked Samurai,' who triumphed in last night's finals. The victory has brought immense joy to fans, and we're here to share the excitement with you."

As the radio broadcast unfolded its narrative, Shizu's eyes widened with childlike wonder, fixated on the mention of Hiroto Fuji, his hero. Keenly observant, Este recognised the source of Yami's affection – Shizu appeared as a puppy needing care and guidance. Leaving this endearing 'puppy' with nowhere to go was not an option. Este couldn't help but appreciate the subtle connection between Yami's choice and the innocence radiating from Shizu's admiration.

Este assumed the role of a guide, leading him through the bustling surroundings. Suddenly, amidst the lively atmosphere, a woman emerged with short brown hair that framed her face. Her sacrament green eyes, though exhausted, carried a warmth that contrasted with the weariness. A tired smile played on her lips as she navigated through the crowd, adding a touch of complexity to the fleeting moment.

"I'm so sorry I'm late, Yami-chan!"

Meredith made an exclamation of apologies escaping her lips as she acknowledged her delay in work. Yami, in response, emitted a soft and understanding giggle. With a tender gesture, she gently patted Meredith's head, a subtle reassurance that conveyed amusement and camaraderie in the face of the morning hustle.

"It's okay, sweetheart; I know how Missy can get sometimes; today, your job is to train the new guy; will that be okay?"

In a soft, gentle tone, Yami posed a question to Meredith, who responded with a nod. As Meredith glanced over at Shizu, her eyes caught the details of his handsomeness, prompting a subtle yet mischievous smile to play on her lips. The unspoken exchange between them added a layer of intrigue to the moment as Yami observed the dynamics with a knowing twinkle in her eyes.

"You bloody pervert! Get your mind out of the gutter and go help him!"

Yami's acute awareness picked up on the subtle cues Meredith was dropping, prompting her to respond with a perceptible understanding. Meredith, in response, emitted a gentle, almost melodic chuckle as she gracefully moved away from Yami. Her steps carried her purposefully towards Shizu, who stood perplexed, uncertain of the unfolding situation. Meredith closed the distance with a deliberate stride. She extended a subtle courtesy as she bowed her head respectfully to Shizu, creating an air of intrigue and anticipation.

"My name is Ayame Meredith; I'll be training you today. Pleased to work with you."

Meredith's voice carried a gentle cadence as she spoke, her eyes lifting as she gracefully raised her head to meet Shizu's gaze. Shizu, in response, adorned a smile tinged with nervousness, playing delicately on his lips. As their eyes locked in a moment of mutual acknowledgement, he mirrored Meredith's gesture of respect by bowing his head, signifying an unspoken understanding and creating a subtle courtesy dance between them.

"My name is Kanzashi Shizu; thank you for helping me. I am pleased to work with you."

Ever attentive to the subtleties of social interactions, Meredith observed Shizu's impeccable manners with a discerning gaze. She glanced over her shoulder at Yami, mischief twinkling in her eyes as if sharing a secret language of unspoken amusement. Catching her drift, Yami responded with a quizzical expression, a silent retort that said, "Seriously?" Their exchange created a tableau of shared humour, weaving a tapestry of camaraderie through glances and unspoken understanding.

"Now, let's start. Would you like us to? First, clean all the tables."

Shizu nodded in agreement, acknowledging the task at hand. With a determined focus, he began cleaning the tables in the room. As he meticulously wiped the surfaces, he couldn't help but appreciate the transformation that occurred when the space was filled with people. The vibrant atmosphere, the hum of conversations, and the clinking of utensils – all elements that made the place come alive.

While engrossed in his work, Shizu's attention shifted momentarily. His eyes traced the patterns on the floor as his mind wandered deep into thought. Lost in contemplation, he mulled over the things he planned to accomplish. His aspirations and goals filled his mind, creating a silent future narrative.

Unbeknownst to him, Shizu, absorbed in his thoughts, unintentionally walked towards the kitchen. His gaze remained fixed on the ground, and his steps were guided by the internal reflections playing out in his mind. Lost in the introspective world of possibilities, he inadvertently collided with someone of similar stature. The collision served as an abrupt interruption, momentarily snapping him out of his contemplation. The encounter, though unexpected, added a brief pause to his internal musings, bringing him back to the present moment.

"I-I'm so sorry, man, I didn't see you."

Shizu, realising his unintentional collision, immediately bowed his head in a gesture of apology, a stream of apologies flowing from his lips. As he raised his head to assess the person he had bumped into, he found himself captivated by the features of the man before him. The stranger possessed a cascade of caramel-brown hair that framed his face, and his eyes sparkled with the rich hue of evergreen. Despite the unexpected encounter, the man exuded a youthful aura.

Meeting Shizu's gaze with a warm and understanding smile reminiscent of Yami's, the man extended a friendly gesture by waving his hand. He assured Shizu there was no need for excessive apologies, uttering a reassuring "It's okay." The friendly exchange between the two, accompanied by the man's amiable demeanour, diffused any tension that might have arisen from the accidental collision. Shizu, still slightly embarrassed from the encounter, reciprocated the smile, grateful for the man's understanding in turning what could have been an awkward moment into a brief and lighthearted connection.

"It's okay, man, these things, please don't worry, you're good, I promise."

With a reassuring smile, the man assured Shizu that all was forgiven. I got it; Shizu appreciated the understanding. Following the brief exchange, the man suggested a quick break outside. As they stepped behind the cafe, Shizu was pleasantly surprised to find the area as tidy as the interior, offering a serene spot for a much-needed pause.

"My name is Hinata Kaito. I've worked here for a while now and am pleased to meet you."

Kaito extended his hand for a handshake, prompting Shizu to respond with an awkward smile. Despite the initial unease, Shizu quickly regained composure and offered a firm handshake, establishing a connection between them.

"My name is Kanzashi Shizu... Today is my first day; I am pleased to meet you too..."

As Shizu rose to his feet, his name echoed through the air. Turning toward the call, he noticed Kaito doing the same. In unison, they went inside, a silent camaraderie forming between them. As they embarked on their respective tasks, a natural conversation unfolded.

Engrossed in their work, Shizu and Kaito took the opportunity to learn more about each other. Their interactions became more than just exchanging words; they evolved into a genuine exploration of shared interests and experiences. The atmosphere buzzed with a sense of camaraderie as they discovered the numerous commonalities that bound them together. The joy of each other's company became evident, creating a pleasant backdrop to their collaborative efforts.

"I used to play Legend of Zelda, too!"

Kaito exclaimed to Shizu, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. Undeterred, they immersed themselves in their tasks. Yami observed a warm smile playing on her lips from a distance as she witnessed Shizu forming a connection with Kaito. Satisfied that Shizu had found a friend, Yami continued assisting customers.

Amid the bustling cafe, Meredith provided Yami with companionship. As the clock struck 5 pm, signalling the end of the day, Yami began closing the cafe. She called everyone, including Shizu and Kaito, into her office. Puzzled, Shizu sought clarification on the reason for the gathering.

Amidst the welcoming atmosphere of Yami's office, a sense of camaraderie enveloped the group. Kaito, seemingly content, added to the positive energy in the room. With a graceful demeanour, Yami began to share insights and plans, bringing everyone into the cafe's operations. It became apparent that beyond the daily tasks, there was a shared sense of purpose and community building among them.

"Good evening, everyone; you all did a fantastic job today; now, as you know, when the pub opens up, it gets hectic, so take a break for an hour or so and come back at 6 pm to open up the pub, and if you haven't noticed, we have a new employee, his name is Kanzashi Shizu, he's new, so someone, please teach him how to deal with our night customers. That is all; take your break and meet me here at 6."

Yami smiled, bidding everyone farewell as they dispersed. However, Shizu lingered, contemplating the challenge of nighttime. Curious, he approached Yami, the question etched on his face as he sought understanding in the calming glow of her presence.

"Kento-san, I have a question, why is the night more difficult than the day?"

Yami gracefully shifted her focus, turning to offer Shizu her complete attention. With a subtle lift of her brow, she acknowledged the curiosity in his eyes. A moment of understanding passed between them as the unspoken question lingered in the air,

"Oh, well that's when it's a different type of lively, there are more people and well much more louder, imagine a bunch of drunk people in one place. No go take a break and get some food into your system, before you have a crazy night."

With a warm smile, Yami bid her farewells and departed in the company of Meredith. Meanwhile, Shizu accompanied Kaito to a nearby convenience store, where the duo embarked on a casual culinary adventure. Kaito graciously handled the transaction, paying for their chosen delights, and they settled outside the store to relish their meal.

As the duo indulged in their chosen treats, the evening unfolded its canvas of colors in the sky. The sunset, a spectacle of breathtaking beauty, began with hues of deep red, gracefully transitioning into shades of warm yellow that seamlessly ombreéd across the horizon. The vibrant display evolved further, merging into a mesmerizing palette of purple-pink intertwined with traces of soothing blue.

Above, the clear sky acted as a celestial canvas, showcasing the gradual dance of colors with impeccable clarity. A sweet breeze accompanied the visual feast, tenderly rustling the leaves and adding a gentle touch to the atmosphere, turning the whole scene into a serene haven.

Captivated by the beauty surrounding him, Shizu closed his eyes, immersing himself in the experience. The fresh air carried hints of nature's perfume, and with each breath, he inhaled the tranquility that seemed to emanate from the surroundings. The combination of the captivating sunset, the clear sky, and the soothing breeze created a moment of pure calmness, a respite from the hustle of daily life. The world around Shizu seemed to pause, allowing him to savor the enchantment of the moment in all its sensory richness.

"So this is what it feels to live... To be at peace..."

Shizu whispered softly under his breath, the words escaping like a secret shared with the evening air. As he stood there, a profound sense of peace enveloped him, heightened by the gentle rustling of leaves and the caress of the wind brushing against his skin. The ambient sounds of nature, a delicate symphony of rustles and whispers, wrapped around him, creating an intimate connection with the surroundings.

Despite being in the company of rustling leaves and the subtle melodies of the wind, Shizu experienced a unique solitude that transcended any sense of loneliness. In this tranquil moment, he found solace in the quietude of nature, feeling like a solitary figure in a world of serene beauty. The subtle orchestra of nature played on, and Shizu, immersed in the symphony, reveled in the blissful solitude that accompanied the profound stillness of the moment.
