The creature let out an ear-piercing shriek, its form distorting even more violently. It surged forward, faster than either Yara or the dragon could react. The dragon barely managed to shove Yara out of the way, his arm taking the brunt of the attack. His growl of pain echoed through the chamber, but he didn't falter.
The ground shook beneath them, the rumbling vibrations travelling through the stone and up into the village above.
There's no time to think about this, she told herself, forcing her legs to move. The altar—she had to reach the altar. Her daggers gleamed in her hands as she darted forward, dodging one of the beast's sweeping claws.
The creature was everywhere and nowhere, its form shifting and dissolving into shadows only to reappear in different places. It was playing with them, she realized, toying with them like a predator with its prey.
