Chapter 224 - Chapter 224: The Wedding

During the day.

It was a sunny day.

The early morning sunlight pierced through the uncurtained floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the interior.

Approaching winter, the warm and comforting sunlight made Father York feel genuinely at ease. He felt as if the active cells within him were leaping with joy.

"Do you enjoy the sunlight?" Father York, stirred by a thought, got up from the bed and walked to the vast floor-to-ceiling window, facing the morning sun shining down.

In that moment, he felt as if his whole body was about to explode, the flow rate of his cells accelerated, resulting in an exceptionally spirited demeanor, his face seemingly glowing.

"Light is essential for plants to perform photosynthesis, a process where light energy is absorbed to convert carbon dioxide and water into energy-rich organic compounds, while releasing oxygen."

Father York suddenly recalled the time he had blocked his breathing in the cave.

In his memory, he indeed did not feel discomfort or the need to breathe, which now seemed somewhat peculiar upon reflection.

"Unexpectedly, evolution has reached such a stage, and I wouldn't have known about this change if not for a stroke of luck."

Father York subconsciously stroked his face.

"It feels as if I won't get dirty or smelly even if I don't bathe for days."

"Not bad!"

Father York laughed at himself, experiencing the explosive sensation of abundance within him as he turned and walked towards the living room.

As always, his housekeeper nun had prepared breakfast for him before heading to church.

"Eggs, sandwiches..."

Father York pulled out a chair, sat down, and began eating a sandwich, not forgetting to check his phone for any interesting news or updates in the several group chats he had joined.

Of course, to avoid making the congregation feel uncomfortable, he had joined some group chats with an alternate account.

As to why he did this, it was because he was always on the lookout for opportunities to undertake missions, much like a drug-sniffing dog in search of clues.

In these chats, congregation members often shared recent events and life situations, dubbing it as sharing life together.

Here, he could learn about what was happening in the congregation members' families. If any member faced difficulties, Pluto Church could offer corresponding help, as part of the donations collected was allocated for this purpose.

In the past few days, nothing particularly novel had caught his attention, with most discussions revolving around breakfast activities and charity event filming, etc.

However, today, Father York stumbled upon a somewhat ambiguous conversation in one of the group chats, stopping when he encountered inappropriate language.

[Katy Sloth]: Lately, I've been feeling strange noises around me. Could it be something unclean?

[Laura Morritt]: Oh? Could it be your imagination?

[Sunny Witz]: About this, you could ask Father York.

[...]

Father York skipped past other congregation members' comments, focusing on the initiator's messages, but the person was starting to doubt themselves.

[Katy Sloth]: Never mind, it might just be the neighborhood kids causing a disturbance. Some new families with children have moved in nearby.

With that, the conversation more or less ended. Father York shook his head and stuffed the last two bites of his sandwich into his mouth.

Nevertheless, he discreetly pinned the group chat to the top and remembered the name Katy Sloth.

With his photographic memory, he recalled she was a young woman, seemingly kind-hearted, brought to participate in charity activities by other congregation members, though not exactly a Pluto Church member.

"Doesn't exactly count as a Pluto Church congregation member?"

Father York pondered, finishing his breakfast as a sign of respect for his housekeeper nun.

Like setting a standard for himself, Father York forced the rest of his breakfast down.

"Sigh, still no feeling of hunger or satiety."

With a tinge of regret, Father York washed the dishes and drove to Pluto Church.

Although it was close enough to walk, he kept the car as a precaution against unexpected situations.

Upon arriving at the church.

Through the real-time 3D map, Father York knew the breakfast event had just ended, with people dispersing.

"Good timing."

Father York, holding a bible in his right hand and dressed in a clean priest's robe, entered the Pluto Church.

Unexpectedly, John Wick, the fearsome assassin, had quickly adapted to the new environment, engaging quietly in discussions with some congregation members, unlike Sister Eileen, the housekeeper nun.

"Seems he's found his own way of living."

Father York smiled, not saying a word, entering the church under the watchful eyes of some congregation members.

His work, the priest's work, officially began at [8:24].

As previously mentioned, the priest's duties typically involve leading prayers and religious ceremonies, providing guidance and counseling, listening, accepting confessions, etc.

Routine as it may seem.

However, Father York was also busy today, guiding four congregation members through confessions, engaging in deep conversations with five others, and providing spiritual guidance and blessings to three.

He had no spare time to complete his daily fixed tasks.

Busy till dusk, the evening sky turned a redder hue, with golden rays piercing through the clouds and shining into Pluto Church through the floor-to-ceiling windows, making the church as splendid as fireworks.

Just after finishing a conversation, Father York noticed Eileen waiting by the side.

"Eileen, what's up?"

Following her gaze, Father York saw a young couple, strangers who looked to be lovers, but recognized the elderly man conversing with them.

"Father York, someone wishes for you to officiate a wedding."

Eileen held a document, hesitantly speaking to the bewildered priest.

"This is their application and reservation. Would you like to see it?"

Adding softly, Eileen mentioned, "The groom is Mrs. Messerly's son."

Father York glanced at the elderly man talking to the couple, taking the application form from Eileen.

As mentioned, a priest's duties are varied, not limited to the aforementioned tasks. An important aspect is officiating wedding ceremonies and baptisms, incorporating congregation members into the sacraments of the church.

Weddings can even be held within the church itself.
