Evolving was something easier said than done. You first needed to have the talent. Well, actually everyone could be said to have the talent. But it was like a drop of water being inconsequential, and a pool of water giving the possibility to nurture a few small fishes. And if the pool could be bigger, even turn into a lake or an ocean, the fishes could be exchanged for whales, or even monsters that should not exist.
And most people had between a droplet of water, and a small pool, a very small one. So that already limited the potential of the population to produce higher beings. While Lucas' idea to identify the talent of individuals through detecting the inner vitality failed due to technical difficulties, time became the tool to let it manifest itself. Because with time, nothing could remain hidden, whether a gel or a pebble. Those with talent would soar, while those without it would struggle just not to drown.
