Chapter 31 - Chapter 30

As the biting cold of winter whipped through the air, Isolde stood at the base of the towering mountain, her heart heavy with apprehension and determination. The blizzard raged around them, the icy wind biting at their skin and threatening to freeze them to the bone. Duke Sable, unmoved by the harsh conditions, stood tall and imposing beside her, his expression unreadable as he surveyed the daunting challenge that lay ahead.

Pointing to the summit, Duke Sable delivered his chilling ultimatum to Isolde. "This is your next trial," he declared, his voice cutting through the howling wind. "Don't disappoint me. Within a year, you need to reach the top of the mountain. There, within the depths of the mysterious forest, lies a cave—a den for monsters and demons. If you can survive and return, you will win the second trial. But remember, you will face many wild beasts on your path."

Isolde's heart sank at the enormity of the task set before her, the weight of her father's expectations bearing down upon her like a crushing weight. Yet, even as fear threatened to consume her, she steeled herself with a fierce determination to prove herself worthy of her father's approval.

"How can you do this to your own daughter?!" Her mother's voice pierced through the howling wind, filled with anguish and disbelief. But Duke Sable's gaze remained cold and unyielding as he silenced her protest with a single glare.

"Take her inside," he commanded one of his trusted men, his tone brooking no argument. With a heavy heart, Isolde watched as her mother was led away, her gentle protests echoing in the frigid air.

Alone now with her father and his retinue, Isolde felt a surge of defiance rise within her, a stubborn resolve to face whatever challenges awaited her on the treacherous path ahead. With a steely glint in her eyes, she squared her shoulders and took her first step towards the mountain, her mind ablaze with determination to conquer the trials that lay ahead and emerge victorious against all odds.

As Duke Sable delivered his final warning, his words cutting through the biting wind with chilling clarity, Isolde felt a cold knot of fear tighten in the pit of her stomach. The threat against her and her mother's lives hung heavy in the air, a grim reminder of the perilous stakes that awaited her on her journey.

"Remember, Isolde!" Duke Sable's voice echoed in her ears, his tone laced with malice and cruelty. "If you fail this time, I will make sure that both you and your mother disappear from this world! I won't think twice before replacing you!"

With a contemptuous sneer, he hurled a bag filled with weapons at her feet before turning on his heel and stalking off into the blizzard. Isolde watched his retreating form with a simmering rage and hatred burning within her chest, her fists clenched in futile defiance.

But as the biting wind whipped around her, Isolde forced herself to push aside her anger and focus on the task at hand. With grim determination, she stooped to pick up the bag of weapons, feeling the weight of her father's expectations pressing down upon her like a leaden shroud.

As she began her ascent up the treacherous slopes of the mountain, Isolde couldn't shake the feeling of longing that gnawed at her heart—a yearning for the warmth and comfort of Lucian's palace, a sanctuary from the harsh realities of her life. But she knew that such luxuries were beyond her reach now, her sole focus consumed by the desperate struggle for survival that lay ahead.

For a fleeting moment, she wondered if Lucian awaited her, his enigmatic presence a beacon of hope in the darkness that surrounded her. But such thoughts were quickly banished from her mind as she forged onward, her footsteps steady and resolute against the unforgiving terrain.

With each step she took, Isolde felt the icy grip of winter tightening around her, the blizzard swirling around her like a malevolent spirit intent on her destruction. But she refused to be daunted by the harshness of her surroundings, her spirit unyielding in the face of adversity.

For she knew that the path ahead would be fraught with danger and uncertainty, but she was determined to face whatever challenges awaited her with courage and determination. With the memory of her mother's gentle smile and the threat of her father's wrath burning bright in her mind, Isolde pressed onward into the unknown, her heart aflame with the fierce resolve to emerge victorious against all odds.
