Chapter 19 - Chapter 18

"Welcome back," Isolde's mother whispered, her voice filled with emotion. The room cleared as the servants respectfully left, giving the mother and daughter the privacy they longed for. The door closed behind them, shutting out the world of secrets and shadows.

Isolde's eyes narrowed as she noticed a bracelet around her mother's anklet, a magical tracker and audio recorder. Anger surged within her, a fiery determination to confront the one who dared to invade their privacy. "I will kill that man," Isolde seethed, her resentment palpable.

Her mother, concerned, covered her lips, cautioning Isolde against speaking so harshly about her father. The complex web of emotions surrounding the Sable family began to unravel in the intimate moments shared between mother and daughter. Yet, the weight of secrets persisted, threatening to cast a shadow over their reunion.

As they conversed, a knock echoed outside the door. An assistant of Duke Sable informed Isolde that her father was waiting for her in his office. The abrupt interruption served as a stark reminder that, even in the warmth of family ties, the tendrils of political intrigue continued to tighten their grip. The reunion, although heartfelt, would soon be tested in the crucible of power and deception.

Isolde, despite her initial defiance, reluctantly acquiesced to the request to meet Duke Sable. The dark energy emanating from the bracelet around her mother's ankle served as a sinister reminder of the power wielded by the Duke. It became apparent that he was exploiting Isolde's vulnerability to ensure her compliance.

The walk to Duke Sable's office felt like a journey through a labyrinth of shadows and hidden agendas. Isolde's desperation to protect her mother from the machinations of her father intensified with every step. The castle, once a symbol of authority, now seemed like a prison of secrets, and Isolde couldn't escape the feeling that she was being drawn into a web from which there might be no escape.

A chilling atmospheree enveloped the room as Isolde entered the Duke's office. Behind a grand desk, Duke Sable sat with an expression unreadable. With a mix of defiance and trepidation, Isolde met his gaze.

"Congratulations on completing the first trial," Duke Sable declared with an air of authority. "Seems like you aren't totally useless like your mother." He smirked as Isolde glared at him coldly.

As it turned out, everything since the beginning was just a part of a bloody trial. The heirs of the Sable family were subjected to rigorous training until the age of eight. Subsequently, they were sold in a slave market, where survival became a grueling challenge. Upon reaching the age of 18, they were required to return to the Sable Mansion, having killed those who tormented them during the trial. Usually, there were numerous potential heirs competing for the position, and by the end, only one remained after fierce internal conflicts.

In Isolde's unique case, Duke Sable had only one child, making her the sole focus of attention. Isolde willingly participated in this harrowing game to protect her mother. Now, she stood in the cold office, awaiting further orders from the enigmatic Duke Sable.

Duke Sable leaned back in his chair, a sinister glint in his eyes. "Most women of the Sable family don't even make it past their first breath. I gave you a chance, and it seems you've managed to survive the initial trial. Consider this a testament to your resilience."

He smirked, reveling in the twisted satisfaction of his own cruelty. "You should feel lucky, Isolde. You, instead of being discarded for your gender, were given the opportunity to be the heir. A chance none of the duke before me gave to any other daughter of the Sable family." The chilling revelation hung in the air, an unspoken reminder of the malevolent path that had led Isolde to this point.

As Isolde digested the harsh reality, Duke Sable pushed a potion across the table. "Drink this. It's a symbol of your commitment to the Sable legacy." The liquid inside the vial glowed with an eerie light, and Isolde hesitated for a moment before accepting her fate. She downed the potion, feeling a strange warmth spreading through her veins.

Duke Sable slid another set of documents across the table. "These reveal the identity of the fake princess, a pawn sent by the emperor as a spy." Isolde's eyes scanned the papers, unraveling the intricate plot orchestrated by unseen hands. The revelation about the emperor's involvement added another layer of complexity to the already convoluted game she found herself entangled in.

The duke continued, his voice dripping with calculated menace. "You've been hiding your true identity well during this mission, but it's time to shed the disguise." He gestured towards a mirror, revealing Isolde's reflection with hair and eyes that differed from her current appearance. The potion's magic began to take effect, transforming her back to her original form.

The sense of vulnerability intensified as Isolde's true features emerged. The disguise had been a shield, and now it was shattered, leaving her exposed to the intricate machinations of her father and the political games surrounding her.

Duke Sable leaned forward, his eyes locking onto hers. "Remember, Isolde, loyalty to the Sable family is paramount. Betrayal has consequences." The weight of his words hung heavy in the air as Isolde grappled with the realization that she was not merely a pawn but a crucial player in a game where the stakes were higher than she had ever imagined.
