Chapter 2 - Chapter One: Invisible Pitfalls (2/3)

"Oh, I will convey your message to her, Cheng Huan, rest assured!" Gently hanging up the phone, Wang Lili patted her chest, as if only doing so could calm her startled soul. The one who called just now was Cheng Huan's uncle, the president. Goodness, his voice was enchanting, causing her heart to skip a beat. She wondered what business he had with Cheng Huan!

Wang Lili lazily sat back in her chair, staring at the computer out of boredom. Having put her mind at ease, she recalled the rumors about Cheng Huan's parents dying in a car accident when she was ten. Cheng Huan was fostered by her uncle until she moved out after graduating from college. It made her envious. Since the uncle was a company president, Wang Lili couldn't fathom why Cheng Huan chose to work in a government department with lower pay and benefits. How could a national unit with low wages and poor treatment compare to being a white-collar worker in a company?

Cheng Huan is indeed a foolish person. If it were her, she would have secured a managerial position instead of becoming an inconspicuous office clerk in this place!

Half an hour later, Cheng Huan, perspiring profusely, rushed back to the office. Strands of disheveled hair clung to her forehead, and her fair little face was flushed like a tempting apple, captivating anyone's gaze. She breathed heavily, having run from the third floor to the seventh, truly an extraordinary amount of exercise!

"Cheng Huan, your uncle called and asked you to call him back!" Wang Lili, adjusting her long curly hair, lazily informed her.

"Oh!" Upon hearing the word "uncle," Cheng Huan's fair face displayed a brief moment of bewilderment. After calculating, it had been two months since she last contacted her uncle. She wondered what he wanted.

Picking up the phone, she dialed back and quickly got through. On the other end, Cheng Xiandong's voice was urgent, "Huan Huan?"

"It's me, Uncle. Do you need something?" Cheng Huan asked softly.

"This matter can't be explained clearly over the phone. How about I pick you up for dinner tonight? I'll explain things more clearly then," Cheng Xiandong said after a slight pause.

"Okay!" Cheng Huan nodded in agreement and hung up the phone.

"Is your uncle arranging a better job for you?" Wang Lili, very curious, leaned over and asked.

Cheng Huan smiled wryly at her, "I just want to work in the office. I don't like other jobs!"

"In that case, did your uncle introduce a better job to you? You just didn't choose it, is that it?" Wang Lili widened her eyes, somewhat incredulous.

A shadow of darkness and sadness flashed in Cheng Huan's bright eyes. She nodded, "Yes, he did introduce one."

"You silly girl, why don't you know how to be flexible? If it were me, I would have left a long time ago. This is no place for people to stay!" Wang Lili exclaimed, her face full of impatience.

Cheng Huan just smiled slightly, not continuing to answer. Her clear eyes had been fixed on the desk and chair beneath her, and she extended her slender, fair fingers to wipe away the worn-out edge of the desk. A warmth floated in her heart. This desk and chair were where her mother had worked. She had strived for more than ten years just to come here and retrieve the only thing her mother left for her!

There was something moist in her eyes, but Cheng Huan suppressed it, not wanting anyone to see her emotional appearance. Turning her back, she pretended to push open the window lightly, gazing at the bustling street scene below!

In the afternoon, during the peak hours after work, with the appointment with her uncle, Cheng Huan prepared to finish her work and leave early. If it were in the past, she would definitely stay here until nightfall. She was a workaholic, although a significant part of her work was monotonous and dull. She was stubborn and solid like that. She wouldn't leave until it was dark!

A black Mercedes parked in front of the outdated CPPCC office building, drawing everyone's attention. They marveled at the splendor and luxury of wealthy individuals!

Seeing her uncle's car from the third-floor window, Cheng Huan grabbed her bag and quickly descended the stairs. After nodding to familiar colleagues, she opened the car door and got in!

Such actions by Cheng Huan would no longer cause misunderstandings among others. In the past, people who didn't know the true situation would suspect her character, thinking she had attached herself to a wealthy man. Later, after it was confirmed that he was her biological uncle, these comments disappeared! Next, there were waves of envy. With such a wealthy and influential uncle, Cheng Huan was indeed fortunate!

"Uncle, what's the matter? Why so urgent?" As soon as she got in the car, Cheng Huan couldn't wait to ask. From her uncle's tone on the phone, it seemed urgent, making her anxious too.
