Chapter 38 - I am an loser

The cab dropped them off at the apartment building, and as Alex stepped out, he noticed Issable returning from her trip with Oliver. His curiosity sparked as he approached her.

"Hey Issy! Go somewhere?" he asked, a playful grin on his face.

"Yeah, I visited Oliver's hometown," Issable replied, a hint of excitement in her voice.

"Did you kidnap my little sister?" Alex teased, turning his playful gaze to Oliver, who seemed slightly bewildered.

"Wait? No!" Oliver responded, trying to make sense of the unexpected accusation.

"I'm just joking!" Alex chuckled, giving Oliver a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

As the banter continued, Emma joined the group, having arrived with Lily in tow. The dynamic of the group was lively, filled with laughter and the shared warmth of friendship.

"Seems someone went on a long drive!" Emma remarked, eyeing Issable with a knowing smile.

"Issy, I missed you!" Lily exclaimed, breaking into a wide smile as she wrapped Issable in a tight and affectionate hug.

"How was your trip?" Issable inquired, a curious gleam in her eyes.

With flushed and bashful expressions, both Alex and Emma shared in unison, "Well, it was amazing!"

"Well, let's head home for now," Alex suggested as they prepared to leave.

Issable made a stop to collect Mittens from Mr. Thompson, who had kindly looked after the furry companion during their absence.

"Thanks for taking care of Mittens, Mr. Thompson. I got this for you," Alex expressed his gratitude, handing over a souvenir from their island trip.

"Thanks, boy! Much appreciated," Mr. Thompson replied, acknowledging the thoughtful gesture.

As soon as they entered the familiar surroundings of their apartment, Issable couldn't contain her curiosity. She turned to Alex, a mischievous grin playing on her lips.

"Hey, Alex," she called out, her tone a blend of teasing and inquiry.

Alex, sensing the impending interrogation, turned around with a lighthearted smile. "Yes, my dear sister?" he responded, prepared for the banter.

With a twinkle in her eye, Issable dove straight into her line of questioning. "Did something happen on the trip?"

Alex, maintaining a nonchalant demeanor, replied, "Trip? Nothing happened. I just enjoyed the island."

The hesitation in Alex's response didn't escape Issable's notice. She inched closer, her playful curiosity escalating. "Really?" she probed, a hint of skepticism in her tone.

"Real!" Alex asserted, attempting to brush off any suspicions.

Undeterred, Issable continued her pursuit of answers. "If you won't answer, I will directly ask Emma then!" she playfully threatened, intensifying the playful interrogation.

As Issable's questioning gaze focused on Oliver, he hesitated for a brief moment before deciding to share the unexpected turn of events.

"Okay! I will tell you," Oliver finally responded, catching Issable's attention.

"Okay! Now answer!" Issable urged, her curiosity evident in her eyes as she awaited the revelation.

Oliver took a deep breath before unveiling the details of the island vacation, sharing the surprising twist in their trip. He explained the accidental kiss between Alex and Emma, leaving Issable both surprised and intrigued.

As Alex confessed to kissing Emma during the trip, Issable's eyes widened in genuine shock. The revelation unfolded, painting a picture of the unexpected moments that occurred in their island adventure.

"I thought you guys would end up together. But it's too progressive," Issable teased, a mischievous glint in her eyes as she processed the newfound information.

"So! You guys are dating now?" Issable inquired, her curiosity reaching its peak as she probed into the dynamics of Alex and Emma's evolving relationship.

"No! We didn't even confess to each other!" Alex clarified, shedding light on the nuances of their connection.

Issable, still reveling in the unexpected turn of events, couldn't resist continuing her playful banter. "So, you guys kissed, but no confessions yet? That's an interesting dynamic you've got going on."

As they continued their heart-to-heart conversation, Issable turned her attention to Alex's hesitation.

"So when will you confess to her?" she asked, curiosity glinting in her eyes.

"I don't know. I just don't think I'm suitable for her," Alex admitted, a hint of self-doubt in his voice.

"Why not, brother? You're a good guy, and Lily likes you too," Issable encouraged, trying to uplift his spirits.

"I know, but I'm still unemployed and feel like a bit of a loser," Alex confessed, his worries bubbling to the surface.

In response, Issable hugged her brother tightly and reassured him, "You are not a loser, brother! You are always my hero, and even Emma knows that!"

The sincerity in Issable's words seemed to resonate with Alex, providing a comforting reassurance amidst his uncertainties.

The next day, Alex returned to work, but his mind was preoccupied with thoughts from the recent trip. As evening approached, Sophie noticed that Alex seemed a bit upset.

"Is everything okay, Alex?" she inquired with genuine concern.

"No, it's nothing," Alex replied, attempting to mask his feelings.

"You seem a bit off. Why don't you leave work early? I'll take care of these things," Sophie suggested, offering a supportive gesture.

"Thank you, Sophie," Alex expressed his gratitude, deciding to take her advice and leave for home.

On the way home, Alex was strolling through the streets when he noticed Emma, who was also returning from the trip.

"Alex?" Emma called out.

"Emma?" he replied, a mix of surprise and curiosity in his voice.

As they settled back into Alex's apartment, he decided to brew some coffee for both of them.

"Issable took Lily to the park," Alex shared as he handed her a cup of coffee.

"Emma, I need to tell you something," he began, his tone a mix of sincerity and apprehension.

Emma, curious and equally willing to share her thoughts, responded, "Me too."

Taking a deep breath, Alex opened up about the thoughts that had consumed him throughout the night. "I thought the whole night about that incident, but I think I am not suitable for you. Can you please forget that?" he earnestly requested.

Emma, with a furrowed brow, inquired, "Why do you think you are not suitable for me?"

Alex hesitated before confessing, "Well, you see, I don't have any stable job, and I feel like I'm a bit of a loser." The vulnerability in his admission hung in the air as he awaited Emma's response.

Emma, looking into Alex's eyes, sensed the genuine concern behind his words. She reached across the table, gently placing her hand on his.

"Alex, don't say that about yourself. You're not a loser," Emma reassured him. "In my eyes, you're a hero. A stable job doesn't define a person's worth, and I see so much more in you."

Alex, appreciating Emma's supportive words, couldn't help but smile. "You really think so?"

Emma took a deep breath, her eyes filled with sincerity. "Alex, it's my turn now!"

"Yes," he replied, anticipation and curiosity evident in his eyes.

"With all my heart, Alex, I love you! I love you to the end, and I will always be with you," Emma confessed, her words carrying a depth of emotion.

As Emma spoke, a flood of memories overwhelmed Alex. He couldn't shake the feeling that he had heard those exact words before. Suddenly, his grandmother's voice echoed in his mind, uttering the same heartfelt expression of love. Overwhelmed by the poignant connection between past and present, Alex couldn't contain his emotions.

Tears welled up in his eyes, and before he knew it, he was crying. Emma, witnessing this vulnerable moment, reached across the table and gently wiped away his tears.

"Alex, you're crying like a baby," Emma teased, her voice filled with affection. "But it's okay. I'm here, and I meant every word. We'll face whatever comes our way together."
