Chapter 27 - Only one drink?

On a typical workday, Alex stepped into the bustling supermarket where he spent his hours assisting customers and managing the aisles. The ambient hum of activity filled the air, from the gentle rustle of grocery bags to the distant chatter of shoppers.

"Good morning, Alex!" greeted Sophie, one of his fellow colleagues, her voice carrying a cheerful resonance.

"Good morning, Sophie!" Alex replied, reciprocating the warmth of the greeting. "Enjoyed your day off yesterday?" he inquired, curious about how she spent her free time.

Sophie's eyes lit up with a spark of enthusiasm. "Well, yes, and I made a few friends," she shared, a genuine smile playing on her lips.

"Really?" Alex responded, intrigued by the unexpected turn of events. "Seems like you had a good time."

Sophie nodded, "Unexpectedly so. We just clicked instantly. It was a pleasant surprise."

As the workday concluded, Alex gathered his belongings and headed toward the exit of the supermarket. Sophie's voice rang out, cutting through the hum of activity.

Turning to face her, Alex met her gaze. "Yes?"

Sophie's eyes sparkled with a suggestion. "How about grabbing a drink? You know, to unwind after a day at work."

A playful grin spread across Alex's face. "Drink? I'm in!"

As the evening unfolded, the ambient lights of the bar cast a warm glow on the cozy atmosphere. Alex and Sophie found themselves seated at a table, the hum of conversations and clinking glasses creating a familiar symphony.

The waiter approached, and Alex, with a smile, ordered a beer. Sophie, playful glint in her eyes, couldn't resist teasing him, "Just one?"

Alex chuckled, "What, are you challenging me to a drinking contest?"

Sophie leaned in with a mischievous grin, "Shall we see?"

They started the competition.

One surpassed the other, but Alex wasn't backing down.

"I'm giving up," Sophie said.

As the imaginary contest unfolded, it became clear that Sophie, despite her initial enthusiasm, couldn't match Alex's beer-drinking prowess. However, a surprising twist awaited. Due to excessive drinking, Sophie found herself becoming drunk, her initial tipsiness evolving into a more carefree and uninhibited state.

"Did you think I'd be defeated in a drinking game?" Alex laughed, noticing the unexpected turn of events.

As the night progressed, the lively banter with Sophie reached its peak, and Alex decided it was time to bring their evening to a close.

"Hey, Sophie, I think it's time we head back home," Alex suggested, glancing at his slightly intoxicated friend.

Sophie, who was clearly in a cheerful, drunken state, swayed a bit and replied with a playful pout, "Oh, come on! The night is still young!"

Despite her protest, Alex, being mindful of the late hour, insisted, "It's getting late, and I don't want you to be too tired tomorrow. Let's get you home."

Sophie, realizing the practicality of the situation, reluctantly agreed, "Alright, fine, responsible guy. Lead the way!"

As they navigated the bustling streets, Sophie's intoxicated state became more apparent. She stumbled occasionally, and her laughter echoed through the night air.

After a short walk, they decided to hail a cab to ensure Sophie's safe and comfortable journey home. Alex, ever the responsible companion, flagged down a passing taxi and carefully assisted Sophie into the backseat.

Sharing Sophie's address with the cab driver, Alex made sure to provide all the details needed for a smooth ride. As they embarked on the journey, Sophie, in her inebriated state, giggled and hummed to herself, clearly enjoying the unexpected turn of events.

Upon reaching Sophie's apartment complex, Alex helped her out of the cab, expressing his gratitude to the driver with a courteous nod and payment.

As they stood in front of the building, Alex inquired with genuine concern, "So, Sophie, what's your flat number?"

Sophie, still somewhat groggy from the night's festivities, managed to convey her response. "302," she mumbled, leaning on Alex for support.

Taking charge, Alex carefully guided Sophie through the entrance and into the elevator. The journey upward was filled with laughter and a shared sense of camaraderie. When they reached the third floor, Alex, with a gentle yet firm grip, assisted Sophie to her apartment door.

In the dimly lit apartment, as they stood at the threshold, Alex couldn't help but tease, "Looks like we made it home in one piece, Sophie."

Sophie, still adorned with a playful grin, responded, "Thanks to my knight in shining armor."

With the banter continuing, Alex playfully requested, "Give me the key!"

"Oh, right!" Sophie chuckled, reaching into her bag and retrieving the key, which she handed to Alex.

Taking the key, Alex skillfully unlocked the door, revealing the cozy interior of Sophie's apartment. As they stepped inside, the warmth of the familiar space greeted them. Alex carefully carried Sophie to her room, where her bed awaited with the promise of a restful night's sleep.

Gently placing Sophie on her bed, Alex ensured she was comfortable and settled. Sophie, feeling the pull of sleep, laid down and promptly drifted off into a peaceful slumber.

Just as Alex, with a sense of responsibility, was about to make his exit, Sophie stirred. Holding his hand, she implored him, "Come on! You can sleep here."

Alex, caught between consciousness and a haze of the night's events, hesitated for a moment. However, Sophie's inviting tone and the comfort of the room swayed his decision. "Alright," he mumbled, in a half-conscious state, and settled down beside her.

As the morning light gently filtered through the curtains, Sophie stirred awake, greeted by the unfamiliar surroundings. Yawning and stretching, she noticed a rhythmic snoring sound emanating from beside her. Turning, she found Alex peacefully asleep on the same bed.

With a yawn of his own, Alex woke up to the sight of Sophie. "Oh, Sophie! Good morning," he greeted with a warm smile.

Meanwhile, at Alex's home, Issable was in the kitchen, preparing breakfast for herself. The morning routine was interrupted by the sudden sound of the doorbell.

"Coming!" Issable called out as she hurried to open the door, only to find Alex standing there with a noticeable red cheek, indicating someone had slapped him.

"Oh, Brother, what happened to you? And where were you last night?" Issable inquired, her expression a mix of concern and confusion.

"Just had a drink," Alex replied with a nonchalant grin, downplaying the events of the previous night. The mischievous glint in his eyes hinted at a story waiting to be unraveled.
