Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1: THE NEW GUY

Every person experiences changes in their mood, as humans are often described as animals. They can display both their best and worst sides, with emotions that are mixed up.

I have the ability to perceive people's emotions, which are represented by colors. For example, red indicates rage, yellow represents happiness, blue signifies peace of mind, orange suggests anxiety, purple denotes confusion, and so on. While I may not be able to see or hear their thoughts, Should I consider myself lucky, what do you think?

My name is Garnet Sayson, and I am 17 years old. I have an older brother who is 14 years older than me. It was a miracle that I was born healthy, considering that my mother was already 48 years old when she became pregnant with me. Unfortunately, we lost her after I was born. I never had the chance to meet my father, as my brother told me that he was an irresponsible father and a gambler who disappeared with a massive debt.

My brother, Aster Sayson, is a professor at a prestigious school. They say that all the students there come from wealthy families, have high social status, and are highly respected. Despite not being from a high-class family, I still aspire to attend that academy after I graduate from highschool."

"Hey, Garnet! You're daydreaming again, aren't you?" a girl said.

"Nah, I am not," I replied.

This girl here is Zinnia, a famous girl from our school. She's the first friend I made after I transferred here few weeks ago, and we've already become close friends. Maybe it's because she's an extroverted girl.

"I don't really understand why the students here consider me a perfect girl. I may be pretty on the outside, but not on the inside," she babbled.

"She's mad," I thought to myself.

When people calm down from anger, they slowly show a slightly blue color floating around them. It's the same when their mood changes. It's akin to an invisible aura trailing behind every individual.

"I wonder what color represents falling in love," I pondered while looking up at the sky. "Today's weather is nice, isn't it, Zinnia?" I said.

"Right," she replied, smiling.

"It looks like she has calmed down," I thought and smiled back at her.

The school gate became crowded and noisy as the students slowly made their way inside the school premises. Zinnia joined her friends from the class next to ours.

I started to think again, "I wonder what I am feeling right now," I then looked at the entrance door of the school.

I saw a guy standing by the side of the front door with a teacher. "I wonder what's happening," I thought out of curiosity. I walked towards them. I heard the teacher shouting.

"Do you know that wearing piercings isn't allowed in the school premises?! And you're not even wearing your uniform properly and where is your ID?"

"Looks like he didn't follow the dress code," I thought. I looked around and the students started gossiping.

"He looks like a thug with that piercings," a whisper came from my left direction.

The guy looked at me and said, "What are you looking at, ugly?"

"U-u-ugly?! Me?!" I thought with anger.

"Look at him, he even called Garnet ugly," a voice whispered from my right side.

"Sorry for looking, I didn't mean it," I replied with a forced smile.

"Hey Skyler Lim, are you listening?!" The teacher said.

"I just noticed the color that surrounds him, why is it black?" I mumbled as I walked away.

After a few minutes, I arrived at the classroom where I am currently studying. I saw a unfamiliar face sitting near the window in the back row.

"Hey! Garnet, why did you just get here?" Zinnia shouted as the entire class turned to look at me.

"Garnet, why did you just get here?"

"I was in the restroom, lost in thought and didn't notice the time," I replied with a chuckle.

"What made you lose your thoughts, our lovely Garnet?" my classmate teased me.

"Stop teasing Luke, don't mind him Garnet, just take your seat," Zinnia said.

I looked at the guy again who was sitting near the window and stared at him.

"Eh?! Isn't that the guy earlier?!?" my inner voice screamed. "Is he really in our class? I want to ask my classmates, but I'm still not that close to them," I thought.

"I-is he a new student?" I asked my seatmate.

"Oh, you mean that guy over there?" my seatmate replied. "Practically yes," he added.

Afterward, the class ended, and we went to have lunch. I walked towards him and introduced myself.

"Hi there, I-I'm Garnet," I said while stuttering.

He looked at me and then said, "The ugly girl earlier," which made me angrier now that he called me that again. As I thought it's really difficult to deal with a guy like that. "I'm Skyler Lim, nice to meet you," he added.

I didn't expect that he would introduce his name to me in a well-mannered tone. I smiled at him and said, "Nice to meet you too." Seems like he is not as bad as I thought then.

A few weeks have passed, and Skyler has quickly gained popularity. His athletic abilities and good looks, as a mixed-race individual, have contributed to his newfound fame. Interestingly, despite not enjoying studying, Skyler is actually quite knowledgeable. Other students significantly altered their perceptions of Skyler once they learned he is of mixed race, particularly the girls. This made me question whether one should adjust their attitude towards someone simply based on their good looks and mixed-race background.

"Hey, you're close with Skyler, right? What's his ideal girl?" an unknown girl asked.

As multiple girls approached me today to inquire about Skyler's preferences, I pondered, "Why are so many curious about his ideal girl?" In my thoughts, I reflected on how Skyler has always been kind, yet some initially perceived him as a bad guy. It confused me how their perspectives shifted so effortlessly.

"H-h-how would I know?" I stammered, sweating and feeling uneasy.
