Madeline's mind short-circuited when Zane gave her an indirect confession. It was abrupt and unexpected because Madeline would never think that a man like Zane would get himself entangled with a controversial woman like her.
So she didn't believe him instantly. She looked around the bedroom restlessly, as if she was searching for something.
"What are you doing?" Zane asked.
"I'm searching for more hidden cameras or audio recording devices. I can't let them hear what you said just now."
"Why not?" Zane asked. "There's nothing wrong with what I said."
Madeline finally stopped searching. She stared at Zane, who looked so serious.
"Say that again," Madeline ordered.
"I can love you better than he can, Madeline," Zane repeated his sentence without stuttering. His eyes showed certainty, as if he had nothing to lose.
Madeline shook her head. "You're being completely idiotic. You don't understand the severity of your words, Zane."
