"I don't understand what you're trying to do by making yourself a big red target for that hag," Lance said. "And for sure, I don't want you to be in danger."
"You know I've always loved the spotlight. This is no different. I'm using myself as bait to read what she will do next," Madeline replied, grinning widely. "So you should just relax. Don't worry, nothing dangerous will happen."
"Madeline! This isn't a game. You're not making it any better for my heart!" Lance said desperately, knowing that Madeline wouldn't listen to him.
The latter chuckled. She got up and drew near Lance. She put her hand on his broad chest and looked into his eyes, saying, "You're right. I'm vulnerable and weak. So it's your job to make sure that I'm safe, right? I will make it worth your while, I promise."
Lance's lips thinned; he knew that was all he could do because Madeline was willful and would do whatever she wanted anyway.
