Wanda took out her key from her handbag and fumbled with the lock for a considerable time but couldn't open it. It wasn't until she came to her senses did she realize she had the wrong key. It was the community college's locker key, which looked exactly like the courtyard gate key, and of course, it wouldn't turn.
She sighed in frustration, took out the real key to the courtyard, and opened the door. After pushing the door open, she almost tripped on the threshold, which made her yank the strap of her bag in annoyance.
As she walked up to the front door, even before she could open it, JARVIS opened it for her. He was wearing an apron, and the aroma of fried eggs wafted through the gap.
Seeing JARVIS seemed to lift Wanda's spirits a bit. She smiled at him, hung her bag on the hook, and sat on the shoe bench to change her shoes.
JARVIS walked back to the kitchen, turned off the heat for the fried eggs, and poured them out. He picked up a pair of scissors to clip some basil leaves from the small pot for garnish. Turning to Wanda, he asked, "How was today? Did you practice giving injections again?"
Wanda was lost in thought sitting on the bench, only replying when she heard JARVIS's question: "Ah, yes. Today's practical class focused on infusion care. We also learned to decipher prescriptions..."
Noticing her unusual demeanor, JARVIS's behavior analysis module went into full swing, immediately grasping the situation.
"Did that Judy gossip about you again?"
Wanda supported herself with both hands on either side, head lowered, trying to hide her expression behind her dangling red hair, so JARVIS wouldn't see.
A few seconds later, a shadow appeared beside her. JARVIS approached her, knelt down, and gently cupped her face in his hands.
"What's the matter, dear?"
"It's just some trivial things," Wanda said, "just normal chitchat, nothing worth focusing on."
"But you look upset and a bit confused."
Wanda pursed her lips, first glanced at JARVIS, then lowered her gaze, her grip on the edge of the shoe bench tightening.
"Do you think we're unsuitable to live here?"
"Why ask suddenly?"
"We're not well-off," Wanda said, "I don't have a stable job or considerable income. The whole family depends on you."
"That's because you're still in recovery," JARVIS said, "giving birth to twins was a significant strain on your body. Even the doctor said you should rest for twice the time. If the community college classes weren't so light, I would have advised against attending."
"But the twins are almost two; I don't really need such long rest time, right?"
"Yet you're not resting now, are you? You're attending classes, right?"
"But attending class doesn't earn money; it spends money."
"Oh my, Wanda, what's going on? Why suddenly stress about money?" JARVIS was genuinely perplexed. He looked at Wanda from the bottom up but couldn't read any particular expression on her face.
"I feel everything we use living here is so expensive. The house is expensive, property taxes and fees are expensive, water bills, electricity bills, internet fees, lawn maintenance fees..."
"Yes, but have you forgotten why we moved here? Because we could afford it. We even made a more cost-effective choice; otherwise, we would've moved to Long Island."
Wanda opened her mouth to say, "That's because you can use your skills to earn money, but I..."
JARVIS was puzzled by her reasoning. He said, "Your inability to earn money now is because you need to recuperate. This is due to your physical condition, not because I forbid you from earning, or you lack the capacity. What's the issue?"
"Don't you feel a lot of pressure?"
JARVIS opened his mouth, a stream of data flashed across his mind, and he thoughtfully shook his head.
He took Wanda's hand, gently kissed her first knuckle, and said, "The combined efforts of all the engineers in Silicon Valley can't complete what your husband can do in one night. Stark Group's salary to me is enough for us to live in the best affluent area of New York. What pressure should I have?"
Wanda seemed a bit lost, appearing confused again. JARVIS truly felt something was off.
He immediately accessed the community college surveillance, searching for Wanda's figure but first encountering an irksome woman, their neighbor Judy, who often gossiped about Wanda's mutant identity.
Judy and her husband lived at the end of the street. Houses at either end of these community streets were cheaper than those in the middle, so they were pretty much at the bottom of this community's pecking order.
In reality, their financial situation wasn't great either. Judy's husband was an investor, but that's just a nicer way of saying he's a commodities trader.
Trading in commodities involves gains and losses. When Wanda moved in, she heard from neighbors that Judy's family had lost a lot, even selling their car.
Originally, Judy was a full-time housewife, but now she had to work. Yet she found jobs like supermarket cashier too tiring, so she used the excuse of self-improvement to go to community school, thus avoiding working.
The reason this became such a big deal was that their family was previously caught up in not paying property fees. The property management company initiated an owner vote to decide whether to kick them out of the community.
Judy was never popular, so many owners voted in favor. But because Judy is black, she posted a video claiming racial discrimination, which put a lot of public pressure on the property management company, resulting in the matter being dropped.
During her recovery from childbirth, Wanda dabbled in social media. Previously, she gained attention due to a discrimination incident, and later she and JARVIS turned into a couple's vloggers. The couple, due to their high appearance and unique backgrounds, attracted a lot of fans, with millions following them online.
Although Wanda was not keen on accepting ads for maternity and baby products, which reduced monetization potential, she still had many genuine followers who occasionally recognized her in the streets or at markets.
Judy also tried to film discrimination videos but never gained Wanda's level of popularity. This might be why Judy has always been somewhat envious of them.
Shortly after moving in, Judy spread Wanda's mutant identity across the community, even to the neighboring one, insisting the property initiate a vote, uniting owners to kick Wanda and her husband out.
Fortunately, Wanda's inherent kindness left a good impression on neighbors. JARVIS, too, always appeared as a well-educated figure and had even helped the property management company solve network issues. Therefore, Judy didn't succeed. But it made her more malicious toward Wanda, spreading rumors whenever she got the chance.
After their encounter at the community school, their relationship became more antagonistic. Judy formed cliques at school to exclude Wanda, who chose to ignore her but was still annoyed by their little group.
Fortunately, when Wanda enrolled in community school, she used the surname Lensherr, which another student coincidentally noticed. This surname is uncommon and happens to be the same as the famous mutant leader Magneto. He speculated that Wanda might be Magneto's daughter.
Some classmates, who were on better terms with Wanda, asked her, but she refused to admit it. However, the rumor spread widely, significantly restraining Judy's group. Though Wanda wanted to avoid too many connections with Magneto, she accepted the rumor for the sake of a peaceful learning environment.
Seeing Wanda wasn't wronged, JARVIS refrained from meddling too much in her personal interactions. After all, even between couples, one must respect each other's personal space; over-involvement is undesirable.
But this time was different; Wanda was clearly provoked. Luckily, since seeing Doctor Schiller, her mental state became exceptionally stable. Otherwise, this situation might have resulted in the whole community relocating.
While comforting Wanda, JARVIS closely watched Judy on the surveillance footage, convinced she was up to no good.
Indeed, during lunch at the community college, Judy was leaning against the wall holding bread and speaking with her group.
Wanda was getting her tray and chatting with Punk's house's little daughter from across the street. JARVIS remembered that the girl just enrolled and had a good relationship with Wanda even before starting school.
"...That's right, it shocked me. Can you believe it? I spent a whole 200 dollars! My friend told me he spent over 100 to fill up, and I barely believed him."
Wanda seemed to be complaining about fuel prices to her friend but was overheard by Judy. The woman crossed her arms and walked over, speaking in a sarcastic tone:
"Who do I hear worrying about 200 dollars? Turns out it's the impoverished mutant. The wife of the Maximoff family can't even afford 200 dollars worth of gas! If this got out, our entire community would lose face!"
Wanda was used to this scene and immediately retorted, "Your family doesn't worry about fuel costs, given you walk twenty minutes to school every day to stay in shape."
Judy's face darkened instantly; not having a car was her sore spot. She retorted, "Only a poor soul would find gas expensive. It's cheap in New York State. Not having a car is one thing, but having a car and being reluctant to drive it is truly pathetic!"
Already agitated by the fuel bill, Wanda couldn't hold back her response to Judy's comment: "Inexpensive?! Don't you know New York State's gas prices are already the second highest in the Federation?! Up 36% from last year and still rising; just 2% more expensive since the last time I filled up!"
After saying this, she noticed everyone looking at her strangely, even her good friend tugged at her sleeve.
"But it's not really costly," someone from the group nonchalantly said, "In our kind of community, worrying about money suggests what one might resort to!"
"Yes, gas costs are minor. A single visit to the salon costs enough to refuel my car till next year."
"Besides, gasoline in America is already cheap, right? I've heard in many Asian countries, gas prices are four or five times what they are here. We're quite lucky already."
Wanda incredulously looked at them, saying, "Minor cost?! But it rose by 40% in a year, and within a week, by another 2%, continuing to rise. You don't find this increase excessive?!"
"And with solar so prevalent, all aerial devices using new energy, plus the good market for new energy vehicles, why is gasoline priced this high?!"
None of what Wanda said garnered agreement; even the Punk's house lady felt indifferent. Judy added one last blow:
"You think it's pricey because you can't earn. Poor souls should move to where poor souls live and stop complaining here!"
