Chapter 4375 - Chapter 3468: Midnight Sons (30)

When Doctor Otto landed, Shiller already rushed over. He saw the opponent aiming with a high-energy ray gun and instinctively dodged to the side.

"Zzzz—"

A blinding beam of light shot out from the muzzle. Even The Hulk quickly ducked his head to avoid it, and Captain America used his shield to cover his eyes. The dazzling light was so intense that just looking at it could scorch the retina.

Dario, who knew nothing about Otto, flickered red magic light in the palm of his hand, and a magic shield formed in front of him. However, under the massive energy output, the magic shield only lasted for less than three seconds before shattering, and the energy beam hit him square in the chest.

Dario was blown away, the skin on his chest burned with a big hole, his lungs charred black, and both ribs exposed.

Others gasped in astonishment. They anticipated Otto's energy gun to be powerful, but not this powerful.

Otto had been researching the artificial Sun project. However, since the Solar System development plan began to massively convert real solar energy, he changed his research direction to study highly compressed miniature suns.

The high-energy ray gun was born under these circumstances. It's no exaggeration to say that there's almost a fully functional fusion reaction mini-sun inside his gun, capable of melting almost anything in an instant.

Despite its long cooling time, high failure rate, and indiscriminate attack blinding light, the power of this first shot was undeniably astounding.

Currently, the newly constructed human starships are equipped with this kind of amplified version of the high-energy ray gun, which is the only shipborne weapon applied solely with human technology. However, it was not Otto who developed it; it was a case of great minds thinking alike in the same research direction, with Otto's main achievement being in miniaturization.

This shot seemed to have awakened Dario.

Facing the fully armed Avengers members, he couldn't quite understand how he ended up confronting them.

Then he saw the Moon Knight mixed in the crowd. He staggered to get up and pointed in that direction, shouting, "He made the first move, why aren't you attacking him?!"

Everyone turned to look in Shiller's direction.

Natasha gave Steve a look, and Steve raised his shield, saying, "Let's drive this monster out of the city center first, don't let him harm anyone!"

The Avengers rushed forward. Dario's chest wound was healing, but slowly due to the various attacks, and he had no choice but to turn and run dejectedly.

He cursed while running, "You damn bastards! That guy in white is the terrorist who blew up the information center! You should be chasing him!"

On the helicopter, Natasha scratched her ear.

Dario was pissed to death, but Natasha didn't see any problem. Even apart from their acquaintance with Shiller, should he not take a look at what they both look like?

One covered in fur, with horns on his head, and eyes glowing red, charging into the city without a word, destroying half the street with a single step; while the other, clad in a silver cloak, holding a magic wand, arrives with the light and leaves with the wind. In such a case, whom do you think the superheroes would attack first?

Understanding the importance of appearance and effects now, huh? Shiller told Khonsu, "Someone like him, even helping grandma cross the street, gets checked three times. Someone like me, even if the blood flows like a river, the superheroes would still proceed with courtesy first."

Khonsu's beak moved with a clicking sound but didn't refute and instead changed the subject by saying, "You've exposed your identity in front of Dario, and if he manages to escape today, you might be in danger."

Khonsu originally thought Shiller would say he couldn't escape. Instead, Shiller shook his head and said, "He won't reveal my identity."

"Why?"

"I'm somewhat popular online, with a decent number of fans and a few very passionate ones. If he exposes me as the terrorist who bombed the Oregon information storage center without any evidence, it will only make my fans sympathize with me even more."

"What if he only says you're the Moon Knight?"

"That would only bring me more fans."

Khonsu was left speechless. Shiller continued, "If he is smart, he will think he has leverage against me and will come to negotiate."

"What's your bargaining chip?"

"As he said, I'm friends with many in the Avengers. Now, his plans have caused heavy losses to the Dark Elfs, and he needs a stronger backer to have leverage when negotiating with the Dark Elfs."

Shiller flew to where he had parked previously and found the blue Ford, apart from slight scratches, was fine. So he changed out of the Moon Knight's costume and drove to the repair shop.

"In the eyes of people like him, there are no distinctions of nations, races, or civilizations. They side with whoever benefits them."

"The Dark Elfs offer them better technology, which allows them to maintain their monopoly on traditional energy even in the post-solar energy era, so they can sell out Earth's interests without remorse; but once the Dark Elves start causing them trouble, and the superheroes on Earth can protect them, they immediately start cozying up to the superheroes."

"Even if you bombed their information center?"

"Even if I not only bombed their information center but also came specifically to provoke him and even led the Avengers to beat him up, he has no choice but to swallow his pride. Because he believes as long as he endures for a while, eventually he can make a comeback."

Shiller waited in the repair shop until evening, then drove to Wanda's house. Wanda knew what happened in Manhattan, so she didn't bother with the car, instead hurriedly came to Shiller's side and asked, "Are you alright, Doctor?"

Shiller shook his head and asked, "How's the cat? Did it get its vaccine?"

Wanda nodded and led Shiller inside, saying, "They were very good, very cooperative. The doctor also dewormed them. I bought a lot of kitten food, and you can take some; we quite like it."

Shiller nodded, went inside and saw four little kittens rolling on the sofa. He smiled, walked over, and picked up the pitch-black one, stroking its head.

"This cat looks like a British Shorthair," Wanda said, "At least that's what the vet said. Make sure to control its weight, not let it eat too much."

Shiller stroked the little black cat's head. From its facial contours, one could see it was a pedigree cat. Its two big round eyes were golden, standing out because it's so black. All over it, you could only see the two golden circles.

Then he looked at the remaining three kittens; one was an American Shorthair, one was a Tabby, and another one was an orange cat like Gugu.

"Did you already name them?" Shiller asked.

"Of course. They're Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, how's that?"

"Not bad." Shiller placed the little black cat into a carrier, picked it up, and headed out while saying, "I was expecting you would name them Erik, Lorna, and Pietro."

Walking out the door, Wanda was stunned. The evening sun shone on her red hair, highlighting the healthy blush on her face, making her appear like a stationary flame. She seemed to be seriously considering Shiller's suggestion.

"If you had three cats, what would you name them, Doctor?" Wanda called out to him from the doorway.

"Certainly not Tony, Steven, and Peter," Shiller replied with a smile.

Driving home into the sunset, Shiller returned to the second floor of the Moonlight Temple. Just as he set the cat down, the phone rang.

"Is this Doctor Shiller? I think we should talk."

The familiar voice came from the other end of the phone. Shiller, not sensing weakness in his tone, figured the Avengers hadn't beaten him hard enough, or maybe they'd prefer to sit in an office filling out psychological assessment forms.

"I don't think there's anything for us to discuss," Shiller said.

"You should know what you've done. Even if you're confident, no evidence was left; if Roxon Corporation insists on investigating, you'd be in trouble. Why not talk about cooperation and settle past issues?"

"I don't know what you're talking about. But if you want to meet, you should first go ask Nick about my salary level."

"I heard Stark pays you three hundred million dollars a quarter. I don't know how frequently he meets with you, but if you're willing to come, the money will be on your card promptly."

"I'm a psychiatrist. If you wish to receive psychiatric treatment, I can prioritize your appointment. Where shall we meet?"

"Roxsen New York Headquarters. You should know the address."

"Okay, how about tomorrow?"

"Uh, still too soon. The day after tomorrow. But I hope our treatment process is completely private..."

"You can rest assured on that, my professional ethics are impeccable."

After hanging up, Shiller turned to call Stark. This was, after choosing to be a superhero, the first time he phoned Stark as himself.

"Hello? Tony? Roxon Corporation's chairman invited me to their headquarters for psychological treatment the day after tomorrow. What do you think?"

"Of course not. Why do you always think about money? I just wanted to let you know, I am a very ethical doctor, and this treatment will be completely private, absolutely unbreachable, impossible to be eavesdropped on..."

"Okay, I got it. Just have the mecha delivered to my clinic."

Hanging up once more, Shiller phoned Nick. Before he spoke, Nick roared first.

"Look at the mess you've made! That damn monster wreaked havoc in Manhattan, do you know how much post-disaster funds cost?! It's coming out of your salary!! And in Oregon..."

"Calm down, Nick. Roxon Corporation's chairman invited me to their headquarters for psychological treatment. Let me emphasize that I am a highly ethical doctor, my charges are very reasonable, absolutely won't price gouge..."

"Oh... Oh, oh—yes. You've always been S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most ethical employee. However, taking work time to give him private treatment should naturally be compensated with sufficient overtime pay. Rest assured, I'll negotiate, you won't suffer a loss."

"Thank you, Director. About the situation in Oregon..."

"It's all that damned Ag shirking responsibility, maybe it was just his poorly trained employee mishandling, causing a server explosion that blew up the information storage center, and now trying to swindle us, no way!"

"That reassures me. Pleasure working with you, Director."

Putting down the phone, Shiller drove back to the clinic. It wasn't long before there was a knock on the door, and when he opened it, there stood Stark in his mecha suit.
