Following the earlier predictions, rumors about the explosion of the spaceship from the Magic Twins' home started spreading among the students.
Fortunately, the Magic Twins had already put on quite a performance, crying and wailing dramatically. Now, basically all students knew that, for some reason, the high-tech spaceship they had purchased for a hefty sum on this planet had gone out of control and exploded in the cosmos, not only costing them a fortune but also leaving them stranded and unable to return home.
A few alien students among the group corroborated their story, commenting that the Magic Twins siblings were simply too young — such cutting-edge products were inherently unstable right after their release. Spaceships, they affirmed, should always be bought used, never new; the twins had clearly been duped.
This rumor was merely mentioned in passing without drawing much attention from the students.
Ever since the attack on Lei, Mercury Base had been anything but peaceful. Now, members of the Justice League were convinced that the behind-the-scenes manipulator, or at least a minor leader, was surely hiding among the students; otherwise, the incessant trouble would be impossible.
But what worried them even more was the tragedy predicted by Lilith, which might occur tonight.
A death wasn't dreadful, after all, Bruce could bring them back, but a gruesome death would inevitably leave a significant psychological scar, even if the victim was revived, and the collective terror could not be easily quelled.
Moreover, Lilith had mentioned that the tragedy would be related to Shiller. Thinking optimistically, Shiller might have taken out the murderer. But on the worse end, if Shiller lost control, then it would truly be a disaster.
Bruce hurriedly had the smart butler install cameras in all the surveillance blind spots, ensuring that there were absolutely no gaps left — not even a cockroach could scurry by without being captured on camera.
Iron Man didn't share Batman's intense need for control; the cameras he had installed throughout Mercury Base were just of normal surveillance density, and even though he had already increased that density to ensure security, Bruce saw many shortcomings.
He went to the control room to adjust the cameras and, with Batman's expertise, filled every blind spot. Furthermore, one camera wasn't sufficient for a space; multiple cameras had to overlap so that no matter what angle the killer attacked from, their face would be captured.
In this area, he was a professional.
And, since a murder was fundamentally a human problem, Bruce, in a critical moment, didn't hesitate to disregard ethical concerns; he equipped all the students with cameras that would automatically sound an alarm in the event of an emergency.
The Flash was on standby, able to reach the scene in less than 0.1 seconds if an incident arose and could then quickly whisk the victim away to safety.
The professors from the Magic Side stayed on high alert. Zatanna, Lady Shangdu, and Wonder Woman placed magical detection devices throughout the base to immediately sense any magic disturbances.
Arthur had also put considerable effort into covering all the walls and floors with a thin layer of water, ensuring that any contact would leave traces, even through teleportation, making sure that no action went without evidence.
Even if all preventative measures failed, they were at least guaranteed to have evidence for analysis.
The entire afternoon felt eerily calm, like the still before a storm.
Approaching dinner time, Shiller suddenly came to his senses and turned to Clark, saying, "Let me go see Doctor Brand, he should have a way with my mental state."
Clark was momentarily taken aback before he remembered that Doctor Brand was a psychiatric doctor. Since Brand was new, the people of the Justice League hadn't thought of him yet; they had forgotten that their school infirmary actually had psychiatric services.
Clark slapped his forehead with slight annoyance and said, "Good heavens, how could I forget? We definitely should leave it to a professional psychiatrist."
"Professor, I'll take you there right away. You'll get professional treatment very soon." With that, Clark stood up, and the drowsy Lilith also opened her eyes.
Lilith didn't know who Doctor Brand was, nor did she care. She followed behind Clark and headed towards the school infirmary.
They quickly arrived at the door of an office in the infirmary. Lilith instinctively used her abilities and quickly widened her eyes. Just as she was about to say something, the door to the office opened, and she saw Doctor Brand smiling at her.
Lilith trembled and closed her mouth.
Clark escorted Shiller inside and closed the door. Letting out a sigh of relief, he then turned to see Lilith's panicked expression.
Clark asked with concern, "What's wrong?"
Lilith, still looking terrified, put her hand over her mouth and shook her head, glancing to the side before suddenly turning and hurrying downstairs.
Clark, alarmed, followed closely behind. Lilith couldn't outrun Superman and was promptly stopped by Clark at the front door of the infirmary.
"What's the matter? Lilith, are you feeling unwell?"
Lilith kept staring at him with that frightened look but said nothing. Realizing something, Clark placed his hand on her shoulder and flew out of the window with her, heading to the other side of the sun.
"Don't worry, Lilith. Take a deep breath. With the sun here, no one can threaten you. Please trust me, I will protect you."
Perhaps it was Clark's overwhelmingly powerful presence under the sun or maybe Lilith was truly moved by his sincere intentions. She took a deep breath and said, "That Doctor Brand is trouble!"
