In the end, Red Hood still went out with Jason. They went out on the streets of Gotham in the middle of the night. Admittedly, this was incredibly dangerous as Gotham at night could be infinitely more treacherous than during the day.
However, striking out at night could afford them the advantage of surprise. After all, everyone understands that the night in Gotham is a time of peril. But as long as one is willing to take the risk, there could be substantial rewards to be had.
"So, you're saying the mob boss you're familiar with assigned you a task: locate a foreigner named Vandal Savage because he trespassed on the Falcone Family's territory last night?" Red Hood followed behind Jason, enquiring, "But he did no harm to the Falcone Family, he only showed up briefly before vanishing…"
Jason paused for a moment before responding, "It seems you really are a rookie."
"In Gotham, encroaching on another person's territory is an act of provocation in itself. Of course, there can be all sorts of unexpected things in Gotham that might force mob members to cross through rival territories. There's no choice but to deal with that. Thus, if there are extra hands available, one of them should stay back to explain the situation."
"That guy named Savage did not only show up rashly, he even rudely bolted without a word of explanation."
"Then, what should've been the correct course of action?" Red Hood asked.
"If he did trespass inadvertently, he should raise his hands as soon as he is discovered."
Just as Jason was about to continue, Red Hood interrupted him, asking, "Mob members all have guns, so if he raised his hands, wouldn't that mean he was surrendering without a fight? Wouldn't the mob members shoot?"
"Of course, they wouldn't." Jason assured with certainty, "If the trespassing was accidental, and it's done by a member of the Big Mafia, if you shoot him down, not only you but the head of your own mob might be in trouble. No one would act so recklessly."
Red Hood nodded in agreement. Jason went on, "If you genuinely have an emergency, after you've left and finished your task, you should call and apologize to the mob whose territory you've crossed."
"Naturally, if the matter is severe, it might necessitate a personal apology. However, the apology would not be to the members of the mob head's rank, it would be directly to their boss."
Red Hood listened attentively. He knew that this knowledge was vital to being a mob member. Jason continued more rapidly, "If there's extensive damage, then the heads of the two mobs should sit down and discuss, settling their dispute."
"But what if they can't resolve it?" Red Hood asked.
"At this point, a third party's judgement would be sought. Generally, that would be the head of the Big Mafia who's in charge of the area. If both mobs are of a higher level, it could involve the Twelve Families."
"Usually, the heirs of the Twelve Families would be the ones to handle these disputes. It's considered an opportunity to get hands-on experience since these kinds of conflicts give them a glimpse of the various dynamics within the mob ecosystem."
"For instance, some disputes occur over matters of self-interest, such as who stole whose driveway, who used whose warehouse, among other things..."
"So there might be conflicts that are not related to self-interest?" Red Hood asked.
"Absolutely, and there's a whole lot of them." Jason seemed to recall something and a weird expression crossed his face, "I remember the last dispute involving the Twelve Families was when a mob boss from the North District created a scene with one of his mistresses. His pregnant wife was so surprised it led to a miscarriage."
"Initially, it was his own fault, but the mistress that caused the scene had close connections with another mob boss. Although they weren't direct family relatives, they still had a relationship."
"The boss's wife who miscarried was not without her own background. The mob she leaned on was the most powerful of the three nearby mobs. Enraged, the wife sought out her father and insisted that he take revenge for her. Her father, too, was furious and went to confront the mistress's mob."
"The wife's husband also had his own mob, and they were in a collaborative relationship with the mistress's mob. He obviously did not want his father-in-law causing a scene, but the father-in-law was relentless, and the three mobs were at loggerheads."
"Eventually, the matter was taken up to the Twelve Families. The oldest son of the Spense Family was studying abroad, and the only one who could take the matter into their hands was his elder sister. Of course, the elder daughter took sides with the legal wife, which upset the mob boss."
"Because of this wild episode his father-in-law had with the other boss, their business was not taking off, and he lost face. Consequently, he decided to divorce his wife."
"Upon hearing that their daughter had mediated the situation only for the result to be a divorce, Old Spencer was somewhat dissatisfied. He personally stepped in, but the version of events each party provided differed, and just as the mediation was beginning to show some progress, the legal wife felt that Old Spencer was biased in favour of the mistress, and they definitely couldn't do anything to the Spense Family…"
"The wife, who felt that she had been unjustly treated, grabbed a gun and blew away the mistress on the spot. That clearly was disrespectful to the Spencer Family. Old Spencer decided to call in both husband and wife for a discussion…"
